Smart's future depends upon China
The Daimler and Geely groups have announced the creation of a 50/50% owned JV between the two manufacturers to develop the Smart brand in China. This development will involve the transfer in 2022 of the Smart Fortwo's production from the French Hambach plant to a Chinese plant owned by Geely. The new generation of the Fortwo will be launched at the same time. It will be 100% electric. Geely believes that the sales potential of electric cars, even small cars, is much greater in China than in Europe, which explains the transfer of Smart production.

However, the future of the French Hambach plant will be ensured by the manufacture of various electric models of the Mercedes brand (and no longer the Smart brand), which should be launched from 2021 onwards.

However, the future of the Smart Forfour currently produced in the Slovenian Novo Mesto plant, alongside the Renault Twingo, is not defined, and this could put an end to the agreement between Renault and Mercedes in the small car sector.

Scheduled for a production of 250,000 units per year, the Smart Fortwo has never exceeded 150,000 units per year, most of which are sold in Europe. As for the Forfour version, it has never exceeded 50,000 units per year, whereas the manufacturer expected twice as many. Smart's worldwide sales peak was reached in 2016 with 144,000 units. In 2017, Smart sales fell to 136,000 units, then 130,000 units in 2018. In China, Smart sales went from 19,286 units in 2016 to 23,381 units in 2017 to 21,229 units in 2018, all imported from Europe.

The Dodge Ram overtook the Chevrolet Silverado in the first quarter of 2019
In the first half of 2019, for the first time, the Ram brand (formerly the  pick-up division of the Dodge brand owned by the FCA group) surpassed the GM group's Chevrolet brand in the US heavy truck segment.

The Ram pickup, renewed in 2018, sold 120,000 units in the first three months of 2019, while the Chevrolet Silverado, also renewed in 2018, did not exceed 115,000 units. In recent years, Dodge Ram sales had moved closer to Chevrolet Silverado sales in the U.S. market, demonstrating that the Ram could exceed it at some point. However, the gap between the two models remains small.

Inovev will observe the US big pickup market in the coming months to see if the Ram will be able to outperform the Silverado over the long term.

This heavy truck market represents more than 2.3 million vehicles per year (out of a total of 17.5 million vehicles of all categories combined) and it is the Ford F-Series that has traditionally and largely dominated this market for many years, exceeding 900,000 annual units in its best years.

These three vehicles have been leading the American market for all vehicles since the 1980s.

In 2018, 909,330 Ford F-Series, 585,581 Chevrolet Silverado and 536,980 Dodge Ram were sold. These three models are ahead of the GMC Sierra (219,554 units) and Toyota Tundra (118,258 units) in their category.

Inovev forecasts 20,000 new Toyota Pro Ace Citys per year
Toyota unveiled its new N1-1 segment light commercial vehicle based on the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo. This new model named ProAce City (the N1-2 segment ProAce being based on the Citroën Jumpy, Peugeot Expert and Opel Vivaro) will be produced on the same assembly lines as the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo, in the Spanish plant in Vigo, which will lose production of the Citroën C-Elysée and Peugeot 301 sedans, that will be transferred to the Moroccan site in Kenitra in a few weeks.

The new ProAce City will expand Toyota's offer in the light commercial vehicle category in the European market, which remains one of the most dynamic in the world.

In 2018, 2,128,000 LCVs were sold in Europe (29 countries) compared to 2,063,000 in 2017, 1,985,000 in 2016, 1,778,000 in 2015, 1,594,000 in 2014 and 1,440,000 in 2013.

Sales growth has been clear and steady since 2013. The increase in LCV registrations thus reaches nearly 50% between 2013 and 2018. Toyota's share of these sales is currently very small (1.5% of the market) but the arrival of ProAce City will undoubtedly double this market share.

The engines of the new Toyota ProAce City will be the same as those of the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo. Inovev estimates that 20,000 units per year of the new Toyota ProAce City  will be produced in Vigo.
