2023 Munich Motor Show - Facelifted Opel Corsa
The former European subsidiaries of the American group GM (Opel and Vauxhall) still in operation after the latter's bankruptcy in 2009 were bought by the French group PSA (Peugeot-Citroën) in 2017.

But the sharing of platforms between Opel-Vauxhall and Peugeot-Citroën had already been implemented previously since the Opel-Vauxhall Crossland derived from the Citroën C3 Aircross and the Opel-Vauxhall Grandland derived from the Peugeot 3008 had been launched a few weeks before this purchase, their study having begun a few years earlier.

From 2017, the PSA group decided to renew the Opel-Vauxhall Corsa in the same way (which would take over the platform and engines of the Peugeot 208) and the Opel-Vauxhall Astra (which would take over the platform and engines of the Peugeot 308). renewal of light utility vehicles (Combo, VivaroMovano) was implemented in parallel.

It was in 2019 that the new Opel-Vauxhall Corsa derived from the Peugeot 208 was launched. At the 2023 Munich Motor Show, its mid-life restyled version appeared, the model to be replaced in 2026 by a new battery electric Corsa(currently, the Corsa is available in a thermal version and in a battery electric version).

Opel-Vauxhall has announced that it will only offer 100% cars in its range from 2028 (all models combined), seven years ahead of the timetable set by the European Commission. It remains to be seen whether this objective will be maintained given that several European countries are not ready for a battery electric new car market in 2035.
2023 Munich Motor Show - Battery electric Opel Astra Sports Tourer
Opel (a subsidiary of the Stellantis group), which will present the battery electric Astra Sports Tourer at the 2023 Munich Motor Show, wants to become the most electrified European brand in 2024.

Indeed, the entire range of the carmaker will soon be available in a version with battery electric motorization.
1. Are already available in a battery electric version: the Corsa(B-segment sedan), the Mokka(B-Segment), the Astra (C-segment sedan) as well as the light utility vehicles Combo (N1-1), Vivaro (N1-2) and Movano (N1-3).
2. Will be available in a battery electric version in 2024: the Crossland (B-segment SUV) and Grandland (C-segment SUV) will be available in a battery electric version when they are renewed in 2024.

As for the D-segment sedan, the Insignia, it has just disappeared and will never have a battery electric version. But a new D-segment model (possibly named Manta) is expected to launch in 2025 or 2026 with a battery electric motorOpel says it wants to offer only battery electric vehicles from 2028.

What is the market share of Opel brand battery electric vehicles in the first 5 months of 2023? BEVs represent 13% of Corsa sales during this period, 24% of Mokka sales, 12% of Combo sales, 27% of Vivaro sales. For the Astra and the Movano, it is still too early to have significant figures.

We can analyse that according to this data, it will be difficult for Opel to achieve its goal of only  selling battery electric vehicles in five years.
2023 Munich Motor Show - The Tesla Model Y becomes the best-selling model in the world in the first quarter of 2023
In addition to being the best-selling car in Europe in the first quarter of 2023 and then in the first four months of 2023, the Tesla Model Y has become during this same period the best-selling car in the world. This is the first time that a battery electric model has reached this rank of world leader, which tells a lot about the global demand for electric motorization and Tesla's ability to meet this demand, both in the United States, Europe and China. Tesla has updated the concept of a global model that target customers around the world.

The Tesla Model Y recorded 428,000 sales in the first four months of 2023, well ahead of the former world market leaders, namely the Ford F-Series pickup (276,000 sales) and the Toyota Corolla sedan (230,000 sales). At this rate, the Tesla Model Y could reach a record volume of 1.2 to 1.3 million sales for the whole year, which no model has managed to reach so far.

The Toyota RAV4 (229,000 sales) and the Tesla Model 3 (220,000 sales) are in fourth and fifth position behind the three models mentioned above. Tesla and Toyota therefore each place two of their models in the world Top 5.

Ford F-Series pickup competitors are well placed, with the Chevrolet Silverado being 6th and the Ram pickup 9th. The Honda CRV, direct competitor of the Toyota RAV4 is in 7th position. Toyota still places three other models in the world's Top 25: the Toyota Camry is 8th, the Toyota Corolla Cross is 11th and the Toyota Hilux pickup is 16th. Honda places two other models in the world Top 25: the Honda Accord is 18th and the Honda Civic is 19th.
2023 Munich Motor Show - Opel Experimental Concept
Opel has been a subsidiary of the Stellantis group since 2021, having been a subsidiary of PSA from 2017 to 2021 and a subsidiary of GM from 1929 to 2017. The Opel Experimental Concept is a study presented at the 2023 Munich Motor Show which announces the design of the second generations of the Crossland and Grandland scheduled for 2024 and especially the battery electric Manta scheduled for 2025.

Opel (with its British subsidiary Vauxhall) is a brand in great difficulty because it has continued to decline in sales volume and market share in Europe for the past twenty years. While it still produced more than 1,600,000 vehicles in 2005, it will only produce 600,000 vehicles in 2022 (-62.5% drop), while the European passenger cars and light utility vehicles market (Opel only sells in Europe) fell during this period from 17.5 million to 13 million (-25% decrease).

Opel, like Ford Europe, saw its sales fall facing the competition from Japanese and then Korean carmakers who were operating in the same price zone. Even Volkswagen has taken market share from Opel, the fact being particularly striking for the Opel Astra which was ousted by the Volkswagen Golf and for the Opel D-segment sedans (Vectra then Insignia) which were ousted in part by the Volkswagen Passat. Added to this was the delay taken by Opel in the SUV category and the dark period of diesel engine quality problems which impacted Opel's brand image. The German brand then had to source diesel engines from Fiat, but this period was interrupted by the sale of Opel to the French group PSA in 2017. The creation of Stellantis in 2021 must respond to the difficulty of managing competing generalist brands such as Opel, Fiat, Peugeot and Citroën.
Luxembourg is the first buyer of new cars in Europe based on its population
Europe 29 countries (European Union + UK + Switzerland and Norway) totalled 525 million inhabitants as of December 31, 2022 according to official sources, the six most populous countries being Germany (83 million), Great Britain Brittany (67 million), France (65 million), Italy (59 million), Spain (48 million) and Poland (38 million). These six countries represent 70% of the European population but totalled 75% of passenger car sales in Europe last year.

If we refine the calculation, we see that the ratio "number of new cars purchased / number of inhabitants" by country in Europe shows that it is actually in Luxembourg that we buy the most new cars in 2022 (as in previous years) in relation to the number of inhabitants, and the proportion is even twice that of the following three countries (Norway, Germany, Belgium) i.e. a ratio of 6.7% against 3.2% for Norway, Germany and Belgium.

Sweden, Denmark and Switzerland are also well placed in relation to their number of inhabitants, and the worst placed (less than 2%) are those located in Eastern Europe plus Greece, Spain, Portugal and Finland. The lowest ratio is observed in Romania and Bulgaria.

It should be noted that these statistics do not take into account the importance of new cars which are registered in one country but in reality used in an another.
