Inovev plans 100,000 units of the new Peugeot 408
- Peugeot (a subsidiary of the Stellantis group) has just unveiled its new 408 saloon (code P54), which, as its name suggests, fits between the 308 (segment C) and the 508 (segment D). We can therefore say that the 408 is located between segment C and segment D, with a length of 4.69 m (6 cm less than a 508 and 32 cm more than a 308), a width of 1 .86 m and a height of 1.48 m.
- Its modern design brings it closer to the Citroën C5X and could quickly outmode the 508. Sold in Europe and China, like the C5X, it will be produced both in Europe and China, unlike the C5X which is only produced in in China.
- In China, the 408 will also be called 408X because there is already a very recent 408 on this market (it is a 308 notchback).
- The Peugeot 408 announces a Cd of 0.28, much better than that of the 3008 and 5008 SUVs. Compared to the 308 with which it shares the EMP2 platform, the 408 is larger inside because it benefits from the elongated from the 308 SW station wagon.
- Its engines ignore the diesel, since they consist of a 3-cylinder 1.2 petrol engine with 130 hp and a 1.6 petrol rechargeable hybrid with 180 hp or 225 hp, although rechargeable hybrid engines will have to be prohibited from the sale from 2035. A 100% electric version is planned for 2023, like the 308 with which it will share the engine.
- The Peugeot 408 by its positioning does not really have a rival, except perhaps the Citroën C5X of segment D, the DS4 of segment C or the Renault Arkana of segment C. The Peugeot 408 will be produced on the French site of Mulhouse and on the Chinese site in Chengdu (Dongfeng) at the rate of 100,000 units in total, including 75,000 in France and 25,000 in China.

Where are Stellantis battery electric vehicles produced?

Where are Stellantis battery electric vehicles produced?
- Volkswagen has announced that it wants to produce 700,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) per year at five different assembly plants in Germany by 2030, in addition to the 500,000 BEVs per year at the Martorell plant in Spain. On its side, Renault has announced that it wants to produce 400,000 BEVs per year at the Douai plant in France, in addition to the 100,000 BEVs per year at the Maubeuge plant in France. What about the Stellantis group's strategy regarding BEV production location?
- The current production of Stellantis BEVs is spread all over Europe and it is possible that it will remain the case for several years. Indeed, Stellantis BEVs are directly derived from primarily combustion engine vehicles and therefore share the same platforms, which are then adapted for electric versions. These versions are assembled at the same plant where the thermal versions of these models are produced.
- Thus, the e-Corsa is produced where the Corsa is produced, in Zaragoza (Spain); the e-208 where the 208 is produced, in Trnava (Slovakia); the e-2008 where the 2008 is produced, in Vigo (Spain); the e-C4 where the C4 is produced, in Villaverde (Spain); the e-Mokka where the Mokka is produced, in Poissy (France); the DS3 Crossback E-Tense where the DS3 Crossback, in Poissy (France), etc ...
- On the other hand, some models, like the Fiat e-500, are assembled at specific plants. And the Stellantis group has announced that the Ellesmere Port site will become in 2022 a site dedicated to the production of Citroën e-Berlingo, Peugeot e-Partner, Opel e-Combo and Toyota e-ProAce City. It is therefore not impossible that in the future, with the full electrification of certain Stellantis brands, plants may become dedicated to the production of battery electric vehicles, but not before 2024.

Inovev forecasts 50,000 units per year of the new Citroen C4 X
- Citroen (one of the fourteen brands of the Stellantis group) has unveiled the new C4 X (code C43) which succeeds the C-Elysee. Indeed, while the C4 is a C-segment hatchback, the C4 X is a C-segment sedan like the Citroen C-Elysée. This type of body is particularly popular in Southern (Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece) and Eastern (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania) European countries. It is also appreciated in South American and Chinese markets which could welcome this model next year. As it stands, the Citroen C4 X could compete with the Renault Arkana in the same category.
- In terms of dimensions, the Citroen C4 X is positioned in the carmakers’ range between the C4 (4.36 m) and the C5 X (4.81 m). Also in price, the C4 X will be between the C4 and the C5 X while the C-Elysée was cheaper than the C4. Like many other manufacturers, Citroen is taking advantage of the launch of a new model to substantially increase its prices.
- The C4 X is based on the same CMP platform as the C4, and like the C4, it will be available in a thermal version (1.2 petrol, 1.5 diesel) and in a battery electric version which has a range of 350 kilometers.
- The C4 X will be produced in the Spanish plant of Villaverde, alongside the C4, at the rate of 50,000 units per year according to Inovev. In China, the C4 X could be produced at 25,000 units per year at the Wuhan site. It would thus succeed C-Elysée and Fukang. Citroen on its side, is aiming for a production of 120,000 cars produced per year in Villaverde, including 80,000 C4 and 40,000 C4 X.

The future Citroën C5 Aircross will be available in a battery electric version
- The Stellantis group has announced that the next generation of the Citroën C5 Aircross SUV (code CR3) will be launched in 2025 and will be based on the STLA Medium platform, which will be also use by the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 (launch in 2023). The new C5 Aircross will be assembled at the Rennes plant, like the current generation, and will be available for the first time in a battery electric version in addition to the mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.
- As for the plants of Vigo, Zaragoza, Villaverde, Trnava, Poissy, Mirafiori, Valenciennes, Ellesmere Port, Val di Sangro, the Rennes plant will therefore become a factory producing electric vehicles in addition to thermal vehicles. To complete this list, we can also add the Sochaux plant which will assemble the electric versions of the future Peugeot 3008 and 5008 from 2023, the Mulhouse plant which will produce the electric versions of the Peugeot 308 from 2023 and DS7 Crossback from 2025, the Rüsselsheim plant which will produce the electric versions of the Opel Astra and DS4 from 2023. We must add the future Peugeot 4008 (code P54) which will be assembled in Mulhouse from 2022, in an hybrid and electric version.
- The choice of the production site for the future Opel Grandland has not yet been taken. This new generation could be produced either in Eisenach (Germany), including the battery electric version, or in Sochaux (France) alongside the future 3008 and 5008. This strategy confirms that the Stellantis group wants to continue to spread its production of electric vehicles on all the sites where the thermal versions of these vehicles are also produced.

The current and future situation of the Moroccan automotive industry

The current and future situation of the Moroccan automotive industry
Morocco has become a major player in the automotive industry in southern Europe since the Renault plant in Tanger came on stream in 2012. Indeed, the country benefits from production costs that are far below those in Western Europe. Morocco's production volume increased from 50,000 vehicles in 2011 to 100,000 in 2012, 260,000 in 2014, 320,000 in 2016, 390,000 in 2018 and 430,000 in 2019. Since that date, which marked the record in Moroccan automotive production, production volume has leveled off at around 380,000 units per year, although Stellantis will start operations in Kenitra in 2019, an equivalent level to Poland. What is Morocco's future in the automotive industry in 2023-2030?
1. Tanger: This plant has just started production of the Mobilize Duo small urban vehicle in November 2022, replacing the Twizy, which was produced in Spain. It is the first 100% electric vehicle to be produced at this site. The carmaker is talking about 17,000 units produced per year. In 2026, it will be joined by the all-electric Sandero, which will achieve a much higher volume.
2. Kenitra: This plant, which currently produces Peugeot 208 with internal combustion engine and Citroën Ami with electric motor (22,500 units produced since the launch in April 2020), will double its production capacity from 200,000 to 400,000 vehicles per year. Currently, the Kenitra plant produces less than 100,000 vehicles per year, but the carmaker will gradually increase the production volume of the Peugeot 208 with internal combustion engine. This will be at the expense of the Trnava plant in Slovakia, which in return will soon start production of the Citroën C3 Aircross and the new-generation Opel Crossland.
