Inovev forecasts 100,000 units per year of the new VW Taigo
Volkswagen has confirmed the launch in the fall of 2021 of a new SUV exclusively for the European market, the Taigo. This new model will be derived from the Volkswagen Nivus, an SUV already marketed in South America since summer 2020 and produced in the Brazilian plant of Sao José Dos Pinhais. These two models are in a way the coupe version of the T-Cross SUV (segment B) which is currently produced in Spain (Pamplona), China (Shanghai) and Brazil (Sao José Dos Pinhais).

The Taigo will be based on the MQB A0 platform already widely used by the carmaker, in particular on the VW Polo, Audi A1, Seat Ibiza and Skoda Fabia. The Taigo will be equipped with the same engines (several variants of the 1.0 TSI petrol) as the T-Cross, alongside which it will be produced at the Pamplona plant. There will be no diesel engine on this model, nor a hybrid engine.

This compact SUV 4.27 m long, 1.78 m wide and 1.49 m high will be the eleventh SUV of the Volkswagen brand and the twenty-eighth SUV of the Volkswagen group.

In 2020, 285,000 T-Crosses were sold worldwide, which represents an increase of 4% compared to 2019, while the Polo sedan of the same B-segment suffered a sharp drop in sales (-34 %), to 465,000 copies (including the three volumes sedan version called Virtus). For Volkswagen, it is therefore a question of relaunching sales of its B-segment cars. Inovev expects 100,000 sales per year of the new Taigo SUV.
