The French market is down 25.1% in 2021 compared to 2019
- The French automotive market (passenger cars) remained at a very low level in 2021 compared to 2019 (-25.1%), a level which remains very slightly higher than that of 2020 (+ 0.5%). In total, France registered 1,659,146 passenger cars last year, up from 1,650,118 in 2020 and 2,214,428 in 2019. This is the lowest figure since 1975, after 2020.
- The reasons given for this very low level of registrations in 2021 relate to the lack of supply of the semiconductors that automakers need to make their cars marketable. But it could be that the sharp increase in the average price of cars as well as a wait-and-see attitude by customers towards the electric vehicle is holding back purchases and causing potential customers to keep their cars longer or to buy a used car.
- The ranking by brands shows that Peugeot for the first time supplanted Renault on this market in 2021, with 285,966 units against 268,975, these two brands being the best-selling on the French market, ahead of Citroën (161,926 units), Dacia (125 207 units) and Volkswagen (105,299 units).
- By groups, Stellantis is the French market leader in 2021 (560,361 units), ahead of Renault-Nissan (424,185 units), Volkswagen (220,957 units), Toyota (100,876 units) and Hyundai-Kia (89,465 units).
- The best-selling models were Peugeot 208 (88,057 units), Renault Clio (85,385 units), Dacia Sandero (77,054 units), Peugeot 2008 (75,478 units), Citroën C3 (65,395 units) and the Renault Captur (52,605 units).
