The 20 largest car carmakers in the world in 2022
In 2022, the world's 20 largest carmakers accounted for 71.5% of global light vehicle sales (passenger cars and light utility vehicles). Toyota Group the leader is the only one to exceed the 10 million mark (10.5 million vehicles). The Japanese carmaker is ahead of Volkswagen Group (8.3 million vehicles), Hyundai-Kia Group (6.85 million vehicles), Renault-Nissan Group (6.15 million vehicles), GM Group (6 million vehicles) and Stellantis Group (5.8 million vehicles). These six carmakers are the only ones to sell more than 4 million vehicles, far ahead of their competitors. They account for more than 45% of global sales.

Honda (3.78 million vehicles) and Ford (3.7 million vehicles) follow at a respectful distance. Suzuki (2.97 million vehicles) follows behind, ahead of premium carmakers Mercedes (2.48 million)  and BMW (2.4 million).

They are followed by Chinese carmakers Geely (2.28 million), BYD (1.86 million), Changan (1.70 million), which are ahead of American Tesla (1.3 million), India's Tata Motors (1.26 million) and Chinese carmakers Chery (1.16 million), MG-Roewe (1.07 million) and Great Wall (1.07 million). Mazda (1.05 million) closes the list of the top 20 worldwide. The remaining carmakers achieve a sales volume of less than one million vehicles in 2022.

This is the first time that Chinese carmakers occupy six places in the world's top 20. It is also the first time that the Tesla brand is represented in the world's top 20. Finally, the carmaker with the largest volume increase is BYD and the carmaker with the largest volume decrease is Renault-Nissan.
