The Tesla Model Y becomes the best-selling model in Europe in Q1-2023
- The Tesla Model Y SUV became the best-selling model in Europe in the first quarter of 2023. It is the first time that a battery electric model has been the European market leader. This is the first time that an American model has been the European market leader. It is also the first time that an SUV has been the European market leader. Finally, it is the first time that a Tesla has been the European market leader for a quarter.
- Between the first quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, sales of the Tesla Model Y in Europe were multiplied by 2.8 and the production of the model on a European site is one of the factor explaining this strong sales increase. Before the production in Berlin, Tesla deliveries were chaotic, mainly quarterly. The increase in sales of Tesla Model Y (+45,000 sales) more than offset the drop in Tesla Model 3 (-15,000 sales) on the European market.
- The Dacia Sandero is in second position on the European market and it is the antithesis of the Tesla Model Y. It is a model with a combustion engine (the Tesla is battery electric vehicle) at a low price (the Tesla is expensive). This is the first time that a Dacia model has risen to second place on the European market over a quarter.
- The former leader Volkswagen Golf, supplanted by the Volkswagen T-Roc (4th) and Tiguan (8th), is now ranked at the 9th place, well behind the Peugeot 208 (3rd) and Opel Corsa (5th). The Renault Clio is 6th followed by the Fiat 500 (7th). On the Top 25, there are 14 SUVs and 11 sedans. Over the first 3 months of 2023, BEV sales represent 13.5% of the European market.
