Volvo will produce the EX30 in Belgium from 2025
- Volvo has announced that its new battery electric B-segment SUV, the EX30, will be produced from 2025 in Belgium (Gent) alongside the C40 and XC40, for models intended for the European market, in addition to China (Ningbo).
- Initially, the Geely group, which owns Volvo, wanted to produce the EX30 only in China, even for the versions sold in Europe, but several factors led the Chinese carmaker to choose another option.
- The possible tightening of CO2 standards taking into account the life cycle analysis of the vehicle (LCA), meaning including where the vehicle is produced, which could become a EU regulation has undoubtedly played a role in this direction. The fact that the Gent factory is today in overcapacity (200,000 units produced in 2022 for 300,000 capacity) must also have modified the initial decision of the Chinese carmaker.
- In 2023, the Gent factory will undoubtedly produce 35,000 C40s and 180,000 XC40s, or 215,000 cars in total. Electric cars will represent almost a third of the factory's production this year. With the arrival of the EX30 in 2025, this proportion should increase to almost half of the factory's production in 2026. Remember that Volvo wants to become battery electric only in 2030.
- In total, an average of 100,000 EX30s should have been produced each year in China. Today, we are counting on 70,000 units produced in China and 30,000 in Europe. The sales volume of the EX30 will depend on the selling price of the car.
- Today, coming from China, the Volvo EX30 is priced at 37,500 euros in the base version while a Renault Megane BEV is priced at 43,000 euros in its base version.
