Comparison between Daimler / BAIC
- Daimler plans to buy into the capital of BAIC (Beijing Automotive) in the fourth quarter of 2013. In terms of production, It is worth comparing the two companies (working together since the early 2000s).
- The Daimler Group is the second premium manufacturer in the world, behind BMW and the twelfth largest manufacturer worldwide. Linked to the Chrysler Group from 1998 to 2007, with an aim to create the world's leading carmaker with the Korean Hyundai-Kia and the Japanese Mitsubishi group in the early 2000s, but ultimately the project never came into being.
- The BAIC Group is the fifth Chinese carmaker (behind SAIC, Dongfeng, FAW, Changan). It is based in Beijing and has signed agreements (JV) in the early 2000s with foreign manufacturers such as Mercedes, Chrysler- Jeep, Hyundai and Mitsubishi for whom it produces vehicles. BAIC has become the only remaining part of the World Group which was meant to bring together Daimler-Chrysler, Hyundai-Kia and Mitsubishi and who ultimately did not emerge.
- In addition, BAIC is in negotiations to acquire Changhe, another independent Chinese automaker once linked to Changan. By acquiring Changhe, BAIC hopes to become one of the leading Chinese automobile groups, and possibly to overtake Changan.
