Borgward sets itself the target of selling 500 000 vehicles globally in 2020

The manufacturer Borgward, which has been revived by Chinese manufacturer Beiqi Foton (a subsidiary of BAIC), presented two new vehicles at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2016. These were two segment C compact SUVs (4.50 m in length), enlarging the manufacturer's range, which currently contains a segment D SUV, the BX7 (4.70m in length).

Borgward is the name of a Premium German brand which had disappeared in 1961 and which manufactured 90 000 vehicles a year in the 1950s, at a factory in Bremen, in the north of Germany.

The name Borgward was purchased some years ago by Beiqi Foton, which is now in the process of developing a totally new range of vehicles under this name, to be manufactured at a BAIC group factory in Beijing.

The BX7 is already being produced and sold in China. The BX5 and BX6 will go on sale in 2017. Other models will form part of the range (likely sedans) and will go on sale in 2018 and 2019.

Borgward's vehicle range will go on sale in Europe starting from 2017. All of these vehicles will use a platorm derived from the former Saab 9.3, as BAIC has bought the rights to older Saab models.

The Chinese group has set itself a target of selling 500 000 Borgward vehicles globally in 2020, as soon as the range consists of six different models. The construction of a factory in Germany is planned in the mid term.
