Has the French carmakers’ production in France reached a new equilibrium level?

The volume of production of PSA and Renault  groups (Renault including Dacia) in France has slightly increased in 2014 and then in 2015. But the production of French carmakers in France remains around half the volume recorded between 2000 et 2006. The two French carmakers have produced in France 1.6 million vehicles in 2015, while they had made 2.5 million in 2007 and more than 3 million per year between 2000 and 2005.

This decrease is explained by the fact that the two French carmakers have offshored their production massively from the year 2000. From 1.7 million units in 2000, the volume of offshored vehicles rose to 2.5 million in 2007 and 2.8 million in 2015.
The production share of vehicles produced by Renault and PSA outside France in Europe (at large with the Turkey and without Russia) increased from 36% in 2000 to 64% in 2015.

There was a relocation in France of Renault Trafic (2014), the arrival of the Mercedes Citan in Maubeuge (2015) and Nissan Micra in Flins (2016). But production of the SUV was concentrated in Spain (Citroën Cactus, Renault Captur et Kadjar).

Finally, offshoring will not stop, since Renault and PSA decided to produce by 2020 all the Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Citroën C3  models outside France (and this means high volumes).  It seems therefore that a new (low) equilibrium level of French carmakers’ production in France has been reached.
