Mercedes has started construction of an assembly plant in Russia
Mercedes started construction of an assembly plant in Russia, in Essipovo (near Moscow). The German carmaker believes in the strong potential of the Russian market, especially in terms of Premium vehicles. This construction of a factory in Russia (the first for Mercedes) is effective at the moment when the Russian market is emerging from a crisis of four years, the consequence of both economic sanctions taken by Western countries against Russia (Ukraine and Crimea affairs) ,and the sharp drop in oil prices (following the revival of oil production in the United States).

What is Mercedes‘ position on the Russian market? Mercedes sales in Russia  have increased from 5,000 units in 2005 to 20,000 units in 2008 and 60,000 units in 2014. They have fallen to 50,000 units in 2015 and 43,000 in 2016, but in the context of the Russian market crisis. Mercedes' market share in Russia is now 3%. Mercedes became the first Premium brand sold in Russia, ahead of BMW, Audi and Lexus.

The best-selling vehicles on this market are GLE, Sprinter, GLC, Class E and GLS. As for the Sprinter, it should be remembered that it is already manufactured in Russia since the second half of 2013 on the site of the Russian manufacturer GAZ, located in Nizhny Novgorod. The four other models (GLE, GLC, Class E, GLS) will , as of  2019, be assembled  in the factory   under construction in  Essipovo. This site could assemble up to 30,000 vehicles per year.
