The top 25 best-selling models in China in 2021
The Chinese market reached 26,274,820 passenger cars in 2021, compared to 25,309,069 in 2020, corresponding to a 3.8% increase year-on-year. Compared to 2019, the increase reached 2.0% but a decrease of 6.4% compared to 2018.

Even though the Volkswagen Group is still the sales leader in the Chinese market in 2021, the best-selling model is the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV which has made a spectacular breakthrough since its launch in 2020. This 100% electric model of 2.90 m long sold nearly 430,000 units last year, an increase of 134% compared to 2020. This model, which is the only segment A among the Chinese top 25, is more of a vehicle for the city, while the other 24 models in the top 25 are more targeted city-road.

The Volkswagen Lavida is in second position in the top 25 (-6.2%) and is ahead of the Toyota Corolla (4th), Tesla Model 3 (5th), Buick Excelle GT (7th), Nissan Sylphy (9th) and Nissan Bluebird sedans (10th). The Volkswagen Bora and Sagitar suffered a strong fall in 2021.

The Great Wall Haval H6 (3rd) and Changan CS75 (6th) are the best-selling SUVs in China. They supplant the Wuling Hongguang MPV (8th) which remains a remnant of the traditional (but declining) MPV market. Only a very low price allows this rather old model to still sell more than 250,000 units in 2021.

SUVs accounted for 47% of the Chinese car market in 2021, more than sedans which accounted for only 45% of sales. There are 15 sedans, 9 SUVs and 1 minivan in the top 25 of 2021.
