Japan Mobility Show 2025: Nissan (1/2)
Ahead of the JMS, Nissan has released a teaser image of the new Elgrand. It will be the fourth generation of this large minivan, which will be marketed exclusively in Japan. According to the carmaker, it will be equipped with a hybrid engine. Nissan produced around 98,700 units at its Shatai plant in Japan between 2014 and 2024, but production has been declining since 2018.

The Nissan Leaf, a pioneering electric vehicle and the world's best-selling BEV until Tesla came along, is entering its third generation this year. Although it was unveiled in June 2025 and has been on sale in the US since this fall, Nissan is exhibiting the Leaf at the JMS to promote its European launch in early 2026. It has a length of 4.35 meters, a width of 1.81 meters, and a height of 1.55 meters, as well as an unladen weight of up to 1.9 tons. This makes it 14 cm shorter, but 2 cm wider and 1 cm higher, and above all 297 kg heavier than its predecessor. Two basic models are available. The basic version combines a 52 kWh battery with an electric motor that delivers 130 kW (177 hp). The ranges according to the WLTP cycle are stated as up to 436 and 604 km, respectively. Production will be in Sunderland (UK) and Tochigi (Japan). Together, these two plants produced around 474,500 of these models between 2014 and 2024. If we include the Smyrna plant (USA), production of the Nissan Leaf reached around 650,600 for this period. In Europe, only around 8,200 Leafs were sold between 2014 and 2024. Inovev forecasts a production of 50.000 per year.

Nissan has announced a facelift for the Aryia, which was unveiled in 2020, for JMS 2025. This new version is expected to be available in 2026 and will come with a choice of two batteries, a 63 kWh and an 87 kWh. In Europe, the Aryia was not a success so far, with sales of less than 1,400 units from 2022 to September 2025. From 2021 to 2024, around 118,400 models were produced at the Tochigi plant in Japan. Nissan hopes to revive the model with the facelift.

The joint venture between Nissan and Chinese carmaker Dongfeng unveiled the N7 in April 2025, the first of nine planned NEVs. This sedan is tailored to the Chinese market and is therefore only available there. There are two batteries to choose from, 58kWh or 73kWh, and it has a maximum cruising range of 635km according to the CLTC cycle. In the first few months after launch, the JV confirmed 17,000 orders. The presentation at the JMS is likely to serve only as a showcase for the international strategy.
