The evolution of vehicle imports in China
- The volume of car imports in China increased significantly between 2005 and 2014, from less than 200,000 to more than 1,200,000 units per year during this period. It then dropped to 1 050 000 units in 2016 and increased to 1 130 000 units in 2017. The level of taxes on imported cars generally defines the volume of imports. The evolution of imports over the next two to three years in China will depend on the increase or decrease of taxes on imported cars (we are talking about notably an increase in taxes on cars imported from the USA).
- By manufacturer, BMW and Mercedes remain the two largest importers of cars in China, although they are producing more and more in this country for local demand. In 2017, they imported almost 180,000 cars each, nearly one-third of all car imports in China.
- Premium brands are the main importers in China, since behind BMW and Mercedes, there is the presence of Lexus (130,000 units), Porsche (70,000 units), Land Rover (56,000 units), Lincoln (53,000 units), Audi (52,000 units), Mini (33,000 units), Volvo (23,000 units), Jaguar (23,000 units) or Infiniti (20,000 units).
- In total, Premium brands account for nearly 80% of imports into China, proof that luxury models are not yet widespread in Chinese auto production.

The Hyundai-Kia group is interested in the FCA group

The Hyundai-Kia group is interested in the FCA group
- Some rumors indicate the interest of the Hyundai-Kia Group in the Fiat-Chrysler Group. The Korean manufacturer would wait for the departure of Sergio Marchionne in 2019 to launch an offer to buy the Italian-American manufacturer. Inovev reveals what these two manufacturers would gain by such an association.
- The Hyundai-Kia Group, with no external growth to date is having some difficulties remaining in the leading pack of manufacturers (Volkswagen, Renault-Nissan, Toyota, GM), its sales volume having dropped from 8, 02 million units in 2015 to 7.26 million units in 2017. The FCA group has stagnated for several years (4.74 million units in 2017). Together, the two groups would become the world's largest manufacturer, with a total of 12 million vehicles per year.
- Geographically: The Hyundai-Kia group sells mainly in North America, Korea, China, Europe and India. The FCA Group sells mainly in North America, Europe and South America. There is some complementarity at the geographical level. The new group would become number 1 in North America and number 2 in Europe.
- In terms of model range, the Hyundai-Kia group does not have a pick-up, unlike the FCA group. The FCA group has strong or premium brands, such as Jeep, Dodge-Ram, Alfa-Romeo or Maserati, while the Hyundai-Kia group has two general brands and a marginal premium brand (Genesis).

The US will tax imports of foreign cars
- 詳細
The US will tax imports of foreign cars
- As announced during his presidential campaign, President Donald Trump will tax 15% to 25% of vehicle imports in the US, targeting mainly German cars.
- In 2017, the US imported 8.3 million vehicles (while they exported 2,3 million): 2.4 million came from Mexico, 1.8 million from Canada, 1.7 million from Japan 0.9 million from South Korea and 0.6 million from Germany.
- In terms of evolution, it is clearly Mexico and Korea which, since 2010, have seen their exports to the USA progress the most (+ 100% for Mexico and + 85% for Korea). German and Japanese manufacturers, on the other hand, experienced much weaker import growth, due to the increase in their production on US soil. Volkswagen, Mercedes and BMW manufactured 857,000 vehicles in the US in 2017, compared with 282,000 in 2010.
- The largest US export markets for 2017 are Canada (912,000 vehicles), China (267,000 vehicles), Mexico (160,000 vehicles) and Japan (100,000 vehicles).
- The bilateral deficit is therefore mainly caused by Mexico (2.24 million vehicles), Japan (1.6 million), Canada (0.9 million) and Korea (0.8 million), much more than Germany (0.54 million). The objective is therefore to achieve media rather than economic impact, even if the sales prices of the imported German vehicles are higher than those from other countries.

Auto production in Russia increasing since 2017
- 詳細
Auto production in Russia increasing since 2017
- The volume of Russian automotive production (VP + VU) has been on a roller coaster since 2005. From 1.35 million units in 2005, Russian production dropped to 780,000 in 2009, due to the fall of the market Russian automobile that year (Russian production is highly dependent on the domestic market, exports being extremely low since the fall of the USSR in the early 1990s).
- The restart of the Russian market was effective in 2010 and Russian production reached 2.3 million units in 2012. But the economic sanctions against Russia (consequence of the war in Ukraine and annexation of the Crimea) have again plunged the Russian market and Russian production into disarray from 2013 to 2016. The volume of Russian production has fallen to 1.3 million units in 2016. The reduction of sanctions since last year created the resurgence of the Russian market in 2017, and the year 2018 confirms this trend, since 2 million units will probably be reached again at year’s end.
- By manufacturer, we see that the Renault-Nissan group (mainly Lada) accounts for only 39% of Russian production in 2017, compared to 45% in 2010 and 62% in 2005. This leading group in Russia must now deal with groups Hyundai-Kia and Volkswagen, while the GM and Ford groups have almost completely disappeared, probably a consequence of the harshness of US sanctions against Russia.
