Top 20 Electric Cars in the USA in 2019 (8 months)

205,365 BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicle – 100% electric) and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) were sold in the USA in the first eight months of 2019, down 12.5% from the same period of 2018. This market is therefore in sharp decline, while it is rising sharply in China and Europe. It might be a consequence of the Trump Administration's policy of encouraging the purchase of thermal engine vehicles over zero-emission vehicles, including the questioning of California's legislation on vehicle emissions. The increase in oil production on American soil, thanks to shale oil, has no doubt favored this new state of mind. The problem is that shale oil reserves remain low, less than three years of US consumption.


The Californian manufacturer Tesla does not fit into the Trump’s policy, with 114,615 electric cars sold on the US market during the first 8 months of 2019, representing 56% of all BEVs and PHEVs sold on this market. Model 3 is largely in the lead, with 93,950 sales, an annual rate of 140,000 units.


Given the shyness of the Detroit Big Three (GM, Ford, Chrysler) to develop electrified vehicles, the domination of Tesla is expected to continue over the next few years, as foreign manufacturers will certainly have difficulties to dislodge a US manufacturer who has played a pioneering role. In 2019, the BEV and PHEV market represents 3% of the Passenger Car (PC) market according to the world classification (including SUV and MPV).

Top 20 Electric Cars in Japan in 2019 (8 months)
34,307 BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicle – 100% electric) and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) were sold in Japan in the first eight months of 2019, which is almost stable compared to the same period in 2018. This BEV and PHEV market represents 1% of Japanese Passenger Car (PC) market over the period, a proportion three times lower than that observed in Europe and six times lower than that observed in China over the same period.

This low proportion of BEVs and PHEVs in Japan is mainly due to the fact that Japanese buyers are buying many non-rechargeable hybrid cars (HEV), mainly Toyota and Lexus, and these have finally monopolized the Japanese low emission car market.

In 2019, 500,000 non-rechargeable hybrid cars (HEV) will be sold in Japan, against 525,000 in 2018, 550,000 in 2017 and 600,000 in 2016. This relative decline is offset by a modest increase in sales of BEVs and PHEVs, until 2018. The Nissan Leaf remains the leader of the BEV market in Japan, with 14,066 sales in the first 8 months of 2019, which equates to an annual rate of 21,000 sales. This model accounts for 41% of this market in 2019.

Toyota has failed to impose its Prius plug-in hybrid (9,000 sales over 8 months) while the non-rechargeable version achieves scores ten times higher. By cons, Mitsubishi has managed to impose the rechargeable hybrid engine on its SUV Outlander sold largely in this version. Honda will market its small BEV from 2020.

Inovev plans 50,000 units per year for the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
BMW unveiled the new Gran Coupé 2 Series, which is actually a Series 1 sedan with a third side mirror and an apparent trunk. This new model is designed to compete with the Mercedes CLA, Mercedes Sedan Class A and Audi A3 Sedan, which are in this apparent trunk sedan C-segment. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe completes the Series 2 range of the manufacturer that currently consists of the 2 Series Coupé and Convertible, as well as the Active Tourer and Gran Tourer minivans. It also complements the Gran Coupé range at BMW which currently consists of the Gran Coupé Series 4 and Gran Coupé Series 8, the Series 6 Gran Coupé having been discontinued last summer.

Like the Active Tourer and Gran Tourer, the 2 Series Gran Coupé is a front-wheel drive, since it takes over the UKL platform Mini, BMW X1 / X2, and BMW 1 Series marketed since last year.

4.53m long, 1.80m wide and 1.42m high, it is ideally located in terms of dimensions between Series 1 (length: 4.32m, width: 1.80m, height: 1.44m) and Series 3 (length: 4,71m, width: 1,83m, height: 1,44m).

The 2 Series Gran Coupé is based on the engines of the recent Series 1, namely the 3-cylinder petrol 1.5-liter 140hp, 4-cylinder petrol of 2.0 liters of 300hp, 3-cylinder diesel 1.5 liter of 116hp and 4 cylinders diesel of 2 liters of 150ch or 190ch. It is not planned for the moment of hybrid version, rechargeable hybrid or 100% electric. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will be produced at the German site Regensburg. The new ranking of automobile groups in 2019 in the world
The decline in worldwide automotive markets and especially the Chinese automotive market (-11.5% over the first 8 months of 2019 compared to the first 8 months of 2018) has upset the global ranking of car manufacturers.

Thus, because they are very present in the Chinese market, the Volkswagen and General-Motors groups have lost a greater volume of sales compared to their competitors. The consequence is that the Volkswagen group loses its first place in the world for the benefit of the Toyota group (less present in China), and the GM group loses its fourth place to the benefit of the Hyundai-Kia group (less present in China).

The Renault-Nissan group falls in third place behind Toyota and Volkswagen. The decrease is mainly due to the decline of the Nissan brand which has been slow to replace the Juke, is facing competition from all sides against the Qashqai, is not meeting the expected success for the Micra and has removed the Pulsar without offspring.

Another important change, the Honda group (6th) exceeds for the first time the Ford Group (7th) which continues to collapse in China, abandons the Russian market and is treading water in Europe.

Behind, the group FCA remains in eighth place and ahead of the group PSA (9th) which loses its influence in Iran and China. Last change of the Top 12, the group Daimler (10th) managed to exceed the group Suzuki (11th) which is hit full blow by the reversal of the Indian market on which it is leader. Maserati has not achieved the ambitious goals set by FCA
The sports car firm Maserati has not achieved its objectives set by the management of the FCA group. The trident brand sold 37,000 cars in 2018, while targets were set at 75,000 units, which represents a difference of 50%. In 2019, the situation worsened, with the general fall of the automobile markets. Maserati could sell less than 30,000 cars throughout the year. As for Alfa-Romeo, Maserati suffers from overly ambitious and even unrealistic goals. The new objectives that will be assigned to it will have to take into account reality. Thus, the automotive markets will remain sluggish for two or three years, and without launching real novelties, the firm of Modena is unlikely to exceed 30,000 annual sales for several years. Especially since the competition will not remain inactive.

This is why the FCA group announced that the Maserati company would benefit from 2020 new hybrid engines, and that the range would be completely renewed between 2020 and 2024.

The Ghibli sedan, whose origins date back to 2013, should be renewed in 2020, while receiving a hybrid powertrain.

The Quattroporte limousine, whose origins date back to 2013, should be renewed in 2022. A plug-in hybrid version is scheduled. The Levante SUV, whose origins date back to 2016, should be renewed in 2024. A plug-in hybrid version is planned. A more compact SUV (based Alfa-Romeo Stelvio) planned for a long time, should finally be launched in 2021.
