The European market by segments and by body type in 2020
The European automotive market fell by 24.3% in 2020, in the category of passenger cars. This sharp drop (much larger than that recorded at the global level) was the consequence of the pandemic which struck many countries last year, forcing carmakers to close their production plants and dealers network for several weeks or even months. Has this decline favoured certain vehicle segments or certain bodywork, or is it quite naturally the novelty effect which has caused sales of certain category to evolve? It would appear that this 24.3% drop in car sales in Europe did not have an impact on vehicle segmentation, as there is no disruption in the segment distribution. The few changes that can be observed are mainly the consequence of the novelty effect (new model launches), sales by country not providing additional information.

In 2020, the most demanded segment therefore remains the C-segment (37.5% against 38.1% in 2019), ahead of B-segment (34.6% against 33.4% in 2019) which seems to have grabbed market share on both A-segment (by B-segment sedans) and C-segment (by B-segment SUVs). The D-segment is clearly separated (14.7% against 14.2% in 2019), ahead of A-segments (6.4% against 7.7% in 2019) and E (6.2% against 6.0% in 2019). The F segment remains stable at 0.7%.

By body type, SUVs represent 39.3% of the European market in 2020 against 38% in 2019, MPVs having fallen to 3.1% against 4.1% in 2019. The category of passenger transport versions of LUV is stable at 1.7%. Sedans and station wagons represent a little more than half of the European market, with coupes and convertibles representing a marginal share in sales.
