The Tesla Model 3 sold better than the Renault Zoe in France in the first half of 2021
- The Tesla Model 3 sold better than the Renault Zoé in France in the first half of 2021, with 13,084 units compared to 11,652 for the French model. This result seems minor, but it reveals a stagnation of the French brand which had been the pioneer in battery electric vehicle in the 21st century, and which had managed to gradually impose the Zoé on the French market. Renault therefore had the opportunity to develop the electric car market to its own benefit thanks to the lead it had taken in this market, against its competitors.
- This situation shows that under the current conditions of the electric vehicle market, the first customers are moving towards the higher category, meaning from the D-segment, while B-segment, apart from company vehicles or the second house vehicle, does not has not yet convinced a large number of customers, a consequence of an access price that is too high for this segment.
- At the European level, the sales gap between the two cars is even greater as there are 65,348 Tesla Model 3 sold in the first half of 2021 in Europe against 31,411 Renault Zoé.
- Despite that, the Renault Zoe remains the most produced electric car in Europe in the first half of 2021, with 31,411 units, ahead of the Volkswagen ID3 (30,334 units), Volkswagen ID4 (24,361 units), Hyundai Kona EV (21,354 units), Peugeot e-208 (19,141 units), Volkswagen e-Up (17,883 units), Fiat 500 e (17,514 units) and Nissan Leaf (15,562 units).
- But this situation may not last with the ramp-up of Volkswagen ID3 and ID4 which are not yet on highest sales rate. Regarding the electric Renault Twingo, it does not seem that it took customers from the Zoe, its sales being too low (7,557 units) and its dimensions being smaller than those of the Zoe, thus targeting another category of buyers.

Stellantis will continue vehicles production at Ellesmere Port

Stellantis will continue vehicles production at Ellesmere Port
- The PSA group, which had not yet merged with the FCA group, had announced that production of the future Opel Astra (scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2021) would be transferred from the two plants in Gliwice (Poland) and Ellesmere Port (United Kingdom) to the plant in Rüsselsheim (Germany). As a result, the plants in Gliwice and Ellesmere Port were exposed to closures.
- Today, the Stellantis group (created from the merger of PSA and FCA) announces that the Ellesmere Port plant will not close, as significant aid from the British state would have saved the plant. Stellantis has indicated that this plant will start from 2022 the production of battery electric versions of the Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo, Opel Combo and Vauxhall Combo assembled until today at the Vigoplant (Spain) which is saturated due to the strong demand for the thermal versions as well as for the Peugeot 2008, also produced in this plant. In addition, the latest series of Citroën C4 Spacetourercontinues to be produced until 2022.
- The Stellantis group believes that the production volume of electric vehicles should increase considerably in the coming years and that it makes sense to create at the Ellesmere Port plant an electric vehicle production centerfor the Stellantis group. We can suppose that this plant, which produced only 32,000 vehicles in 2020, will host in the future battery electric versions of the Toyota ProAce City and future Fiat Doblo, based on the same platform as the Berlingo and Partner. The capacity of the Ellesmere Port plant is now 100,000 vehicles per year, but could be doubled by 2030 to face the demand.

What is the share of BEVs in the models sold in Europe?
- 说明
What is the share of BEVs in the models sold in Europe?
- In the European automotive market in 2021, electric models are divided into two categories. Those which are sold exclusively in battery electric (BEV) version and those which are also sold, in addition to the BEV, in thermal or hybrid version. There are around thirty models sold exclusively in battery electric version on the European market. The models sold both in battery electric and in thermal (or hybrid) are less numerous, there are about twenty of them, and it is therefore interesting to know the share that the electric battery version represents in the total sales of each of these models in Europe.
- There are not many models that are sold mainly in BEV, as there are only the Volkswagen Up (51%), Hyundai Kona (51%) and Kia Niro (45%). The Hyundai Ioniq also, but at a lower level (31%).
- Between 20% and 30% of sales, we count the Mercedes EQC (compared to the GLC) with 26% of sales in electric version, the Renault Zoé (compared to the Clio) with 25% of sales in electric, the Volkswagen ID3 (compared to the Golf) with 23% of electric sales, the DS3 Crossback with 21% of electric sales, the Renault Twingo with 21% of electric sales and the Volkswagen ID4 (compared to the Tiguan) with 20% of sales in electric.
- Between 10% and 20% of sales, there are the Fiat 500 with 19% of electric sales, the Peugeot 208 with 16% of electric sales, the Mercedes EQA (compared to the GLA) with 16% of electric sales, the Mini with 15% of electric sales, the Opel Mokka with 14% of electric sales, the Opel Corsa with 11% of electric sales and the Peugeot 2008 with 10% of electric sales.

The pick-up market didn’t succeed in Europe
- 说明
The pick-up market didn’t succeed in Europe
- About ten years ago, carmakers tried to develop a pick-up market in Europe, taking inspiration from the business case of the American market which is composed of almost 20% of pick-ups, including 15% of the superior category, with the Ford F Series, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and Dodge Ram.
- In Europe, carmakers entered this market with renewed models such as the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi L200, Ford Ranger and Isuzu D-Max or brand new models, such as the Volkswagen Amarok, Renault Alaskan, the Fiat Fullback and the Mercedes. X-Class. These models were mid-range pickups and not larger sizes (type Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado or Ram 1500) which do not fit to the European market.
- From a market equivalent to 50,000 units in 2013, the European market rose to 70,000 units in 2015 then 100,000 in 2017 and reached a peak in sales in 2018, with 114,000 units (i.e. 0.6% of the European market ).
- Since that date, the pick-up market has fallen to 105,000 units in 2019 and 75,000 units in 2020, which was a special year. In the first 6 months of 2021, sales reached 49,000 units, meaning probably less than 100,000 units for the year as a whole. Several carmakers have withdrawn from this market, such as Renault (Alaskan), Mercedes (Class X) or Fiat (Fullback). Volkswagen (Amarok) is gradually starting to withdraw from this market and other carmakers do not foresee any further development of the pick-up market in Europe in the coming years.

Jaguar plans to completely reposition itself
- 说明
Jaguar plans to completely reposition itself
- For three years, sales of Jaguar models have fallen sharply. The E-Pace and F-Pace SUVs enjoyed brief success before drastically reducing their presence in the global market. As for sedans, they practically disappeared from the market, with sales becoming extremely confidential, the movement having started with the discontinuation of the large XJ sedan, heir to a long line of F-segment sedans (1968-2019).
- In fact, the Jaguar brand once considered one of the most iconic and luxurious British brands (Jaguar MKX and XJ6 / XJ12, Jaguar E-Type and XJS) has become very ordinary by positioning itself in the mid-size sedan market(D-segment) and mid-range SUVs. The end of large coupes and convertibles contributed to the loss of prestige.
- Arriving at the head of Jaguar at the start of the year, Thierry Bolloré (ex-Renault) announced that he was working on a total brand repositioning, in order to compete in the luxury automotive market.
- Inspired by Jaguar’s strategy in the 1950s, the carmaker intends to move upmarket and compete again with Bentleys, both in the limousine, SUV, coupes and convertibles markets. Bentley has sold between 10,000 and 12,000 cars each year since 2012, and the brand is doing very well, while Jaguar, which sold 90,000 cars in 2020 (against a target of 200,000 per year) is financially in difficulties. At the heart of Jaguar's new strategy, battery electric powertrain for all models in 2030, such as the I-Pace launched in 2018.
