The Thai passenger car market fell by 3.8% in 2013
- The Thai passenger car market fell by 3.8% in 2013 but is expected to return to growth in 2014. Indeed, this market represented 740 000 units last year against 770 000 in 2012, nevertheless the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) expects sales to reach 760 000 units in 2014, 780 000 in 2015 and 800 000 in 2016.
- Japanese brands account for 86% of the Thai market. Toyota (31% market share) is ahead of Honda (26%), Nissan (11%), Mitsubishi (9%), Suzuki (5%) and Mazda (4%). Toyota and Honda together account for 57% of sales.
- American brands (GM and Ford groups) account for 9% of the market. The remaining 5% is shared between European, Chinese, Malaysian and Korean brands.
- By model, the Toyota Vios, a 4-door sedan from segment B is the market leader (108 937 units), followed by the Honda City, a 4 doors sedan from segment B (73 045 units), Honda Civic (46 416 units), Toyota Corolla (42 443 units) and the Mitsubishi Space Star, an other sedan from segment B (39 750 units). The majority of vehicles sold in Thailand are produced locally.
- In 2013, Thailand produced 1 071 076 passenger cars and 1 389 760 commercial vehicles, totaling at 2.46 million vehicles, this means that Thailand is the ninth largest market in the world ahead of Canada, Spain and France. The Federation of Thai Industries expects a production of 2.55 million vehicles in 2014.
