Chinese exports have been in decline since 2013
- Chinese automobile exports fell to 755 000 vehicles in 2015, representing a return to 2008 levels. However, while in 2008 these exports represented 9% of Chinese automobile production, they represented only 3% in 2015. Chinese automobile production effectively tripled between 2008 and 2015.
- This production is primarily intended for the domestic market, which absorbed 24.5 million vehicles in 2015, and which will absorb a million more each year, due to sturdy demand. The hundreds of thousands of vehicles exported since 2012 therefore do not have a significant effect on Chinese automobile production.
- The situation would be markedly different if the domestic market were sluggish or in decline. At the current moment, it is logical to assert that exports are not a priority for Chinese manufacturers, who already have plenty to occupy them in the domestic market, where results have been positive, as they are expanding their share of the market at the expense of foreign manufacturers.
- Although exports are not currently a priority for Chinese manufacturers, they could become one soon, especially in light of a predicted tapering off of growth in the Chinese market over the next few years.
- This has led Chinese manufacturers to open R&D centres in Europe in order to be in a better position to prepare for large-scale investment in the European market . But this process should take many years.
