South Africa Automotive Market (PC+LCV) in 2016
- The South African car market (PC + LCV) is very cyclical. After increasing between 2003 and 2006, it began to decline in 2007, and this decline increased in 2008 and 2009. After increasing between 2010 and 2013, it began to decline in 2014, increasingly so in 2015, and even more so in 2016. Total sales dropped to 550,000 units last year (-11%), compared to 650,000 units in 2013. In fact, this market has never managed to exceed its record level of 2006.
- Most manufacturers saw their sales slump in 2016, except for Mazda, which saw its sales rise. Toyota remains leader in the South African market (117,000 units , -4.9%) ahead of Volkswagen (92,000 units , -11.4%), Ford (74,000 units , -5.9%), Renault- Nissan (60,000 units, -12%), Hyundai-Kia (53,000 units , -8%). These five locally-producing manufacturers account for 74% of the South African market (22% for Toyota, 17% for Volkswagen, 14% for Ford, 11% for Renault-Nissan and 10% for Hyundai-Kia).
- The top ten models on the South African market in 2016 were the Toyota Hilux pick-up (35,000 units), Ford Ranger pick-up (32,000), VW Polo Vivo (29,000), VW Polo(23 000) Toyota Corolla (17 000) Toyota Quantum (15,000), Toyota Etios (13,000), Nissan NP200 pick-up (13,000), Isuzu D-Max pick-up (12,000) and Chevrolet pick-up (12,000). Five pickups are therefore in the top 10 sales. The other five models are mainly B and C segment sedans.
