Car production in Russia and Ukraine
Russian automobile production has been relatively stable since 2014, with a volume of between 1.3 million and 1.7 million units per year, most of which is sold locally. Exports represent only a very small part of production (5% or 85,000 units in 2021) mainly intended for the former republics attached to Russia during the time of the USSR, such as Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan , Uzbekistan, Armenia and Ukraine, these six countries accounting for 90% of Russian automotive exports. Imports represent 15% of car registrations in Russia, i.e. 250,000 units in 2021, mainly from Japan, China, Germany, the USA, Mexico and Belarus, these six countries representing 80 % of automobile imports in Russia.

The main manufacturers established in Russia are also those which sell the most in this country and those which export the most. The leader is the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi group (which owns the local brand Avtovaz) which represents 34% of the local market and 36% of the volume of cars produced in Russia, followed by the Hyundai-Kia group (23% of the Russian market and 26 % of the volume produced in Russia) and the Volkswagen group (12% of the Russian market and 11% of the volume produced in Russia).

Ukraine, for its part, saw its production collapse in 2009 and since 2014 its production has become anecdotal. The Ukrainian automotive market (100,000 sales per year) is supplied almost entirely by imports from Europe, China, Japan and Russia. The leaders of the Ukrainian market are Renault-Nissan, Hyundai-Kia and Volkswagen, as in Russia. The physiognomy of the two markets remains quite similar.
