South African production by model in 2017
- South Africa currently has seven car plants: East London (Daimler), Isipingo (Toyota), Kempston Road (Isuzu), Rosslyn (BMW and Nissan), Silverton (Ford), Straundale (GM),and Uitenhage (Volkswagen). In 2017, these plants produced a total of 548,000 vehicles.
- This production is broken down by brands as follows: 123,000 Toyota, 118,000 Mercedes, 110,000 Volkswagen, 87,000 Ford, 53,000 BMW, 23,000 Nissan, 18,000 Isuzu, 8,000 Chevrolet, 3,000 Hyundai, 3,000 Beijing, 1,000 Mazda and 1,000 Tata.
- Analysis by model shows that the Mercedes C-Class is the most produced car in 2017 (118,000 units), ahead of the Volkswagen Polo (84,000), Ford Ranger (82,000), Toyota Hilux (76,000) and BMW 3 Series (53,000). These five models account for 75% of South African production in 2017.
- South African automotive production remains highly concentrated as only 19 models were manufactured in its factories last year, 5 of which are preponderant.
- By body-type , sedans account for 55% of South African production in 2017. Pick-ups, which are in majority in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa, account for only 36% of production, SUVs only 5%, and vans 4% .

Spanish automobile production in 2017 returns to its 2005 level
- Spain's car production (PC+ LCV ) returned to its 2005 level in 2017, after falling sharply between 2007 and 2012 (minus one million vehicles in five years), following the financial crisis of 2008-2009 and its impact on the European car market which fell to the lowest levels of the decade.
- Moreover, markets in the South (Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece) were the most impacted.
- Resurgence of Spanish production materialized as of 2014 and continued until 2016. The year 2017, however, marked a slight decline in Spanish production.
- As to the situation by manufacturer, Opel, now owned by PSA, lost a lot of influence between 2007 and 2012. Its market share went from 8.5% to 6.5% in five years, in a shrinking European market. Ford also lost influence as its market share in Europe decreased from 8.5% to 7.5% in five years. The negative evolution of these two manufacturers explains in part the fall in Spanish production between 2007 and 2012.
- In 2017, only the Renault-Nissan, Volkswagen and Daimler groups have a production volume higher than that of 2005. If Ford managed to maintain a production volume comparable to that of 2005, it was because it had to transfer all its Belgium production to Spain in 2014, resulting in the closure of its Belgian factory.

World share of automatic gearboxes
- 詳細
World share of automatic gearboxes
- Automatic transmissions account for 55% of the global market in 2017, compared to 45% in 2007. Largely in majority in the US market since the early 1960s, cars equipped with automatic boxes flooded the Japanese market in the 70s. Even today the United States and Japan remain the most equipped markets in automatic gearboxes (95% and 90% respectively ). The Chinese market that started in the 2000s quickly became the third market equipped with automatic transmission at 60%.
- Europe has always had a certain reluctance to adopt this type of equipment (price, consumption, maintenance) but there has been a real evolution over the last ten years, since in 2017, nearly 30% of the cars sold in Europe are equipped with an automatic gearbox, vs. 15% in 2007. In France, this rate even tripled during the same period.
- Here are the different types of automatic boxes today:
1. classic automatic gearbox with a torque converter. This is the most common (30% of the world market).
2. robotised double clutch gearbox with two half-boxes placed in parallel.
3. single clutch robotised gearbox with a clutch driven by electromechanical actuators.
4. CVT gearbox with belt and pulleys to modulate the transmission ratio.
5. boxes specific to hybrid cars (variator) or electric cars (reducer ).

British automobile production in 2017 returns to its 2005 level
- UK car production (PC+LCV ) returned to its 2005 level in 2017, after falling sharply between 2007 and 2009. As of 2010, British car production restarted (four years before Spanish production and French production) to return seven years later to its 2005 level.
- British car production was driven by the good performance of the UK market, which increased from 2.2 million to 3 million between 2010 and 2016, while most other European countries waited until 2014 for market growth. However, not all OEMs on British soil have benefited from the same growth.
- Two manufacturers have particularly distinguished themselves: the Renault-Nissan group, which has benefited from the success of the Qashqai and whose production volume in England has increased from 380,000 units in 2007 to 510,000 in 2016, and the Jaguar Land-Rover group (subsidiary Indian group Tata), which benefited from both the expansion of its range and the strong growth of its exports to China from 2010. The production volume of Jaguar Land-Rover has doubled between 2007 and 2017, from 290,000 units to 580,000 during this period. Exports to China reached up to 90,000 units a year (in 2015) while they were zero in 2009. If they dropped to 75,000 units in 2016 and 65,000 in 2017, it is only because Jaguar Land-Rover has been producing vehicles in China since 2016 (45,000 units in 2016 and 85,000 in 2017).

Automobile production in Germany stagnates at 6 million units since 2011

Automobile production in Germany stagnates at 6 million units since 2011
- Automobile production (PC+LCV ) in Germany has stagnated since 2011. Relocations to Hungary (Audi, Mercedes), to Slovakia (Volkswagen), to Poland (Volkswagen, Opel) or to Portugal (Volkswagen) could be part of the explanation for this stagnation.
- Another possible explanation is the gradual transfer of German car exports to China (mainly BMWs and Mercedes) and to North America (mainly Mercedes C-Class, Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi Q5).
- However, when we look at the figures by manufacturer, we see that the explanation is quite different because the Daimler (Mercedes) and BMW groups ‘volume has increased steadily since 2011.
- In reality, car production in Germany stagnates since 2011 not only because dieselgate has cut the production of the Volkswagen Group by a hundred thousand vehicles a year in 2016 and 2017, but mainly because of the continuous decline in the volume of production of US manufacturers in Germany, namely Ford and GM (Opel).
- Ford and GM lost 150,000 vehicles each between 2011 and 2017, while Daimler gained 240,000 and BMW 180,000 during the same period. For its part, Volkswagen lost 130,000 vehicles between 2011 and 2017.
