The Seat Alhambra end of production signs the end of large European MPV
The removal of the large Alhambra MPV (D segment) from the Seat product range may mark the beginning of the end for this type of model, less and less demanded by customers, at least in Europe as there is still a small demand for it in North America.

In the USA for example, MPV represented 170,000 sales in the first seven months of 2020, or only 2.2% of the US market, against more than 10% twenty years ago. The growth of SUVs - as everywhere - having reduced the influence of MPVs to a tiny share of the market. On the US market, the only models still sold are the Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Caravan, Dodge Journey, Toyota Sienna and Kia Carnival, when twenty years ago the offer was much more wider, notably at Ford and GM.

In Europe, the remaining large MPVs are the Volkswagen Sharan, Ford Galaxy and S-Max, Renault Espace and Mercedes V-Class, the latter being more of a Minivan than a true MPV. Renault has announced the non-replacement of Espace, and that Ford has indicated that the Galaxy and S-Max are nearing the end of their commercial career and that they will not be replaced. In the first seven months of 2020, these models totalled 44,372 units in Europe, or just 0.8% of the European market, a proportion three times lower than that of the US market.

The large Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Lancia and Opel minivans have disappeared since a long time and the Seat Alhambra is the latest to be removed from the product range, thus announcing the imminent end of this type of vehicle in the D segment.

VW ID5 and ID Buzz to be launched in 2021 and 2022
Following the launch in 2020 of the Volkswagen ID3 sedan and coming ID4 SUV, both battery electric vehicles (BEV) from the C-segment market, the German carmaker has announced the launch of the ID5 in 2021 and the ID Buzz in 2022.

The Volkswagen ID5 will be a D-segment SUV, therefore longer than the ID4 (length: 4.62 m). This future model targets the VW Passat and VW Tiguan customers. It will be produced in Zwickau, alongside ID3 and ID4; this plant having a production capacity of 200,000 electric cars per year. It should also be noted that the carmaker’s objective of producing 100,000 cars in Zwickau by 2020 will not be met, due to the coronavirus crisis and the postponement of the ID3 production for several months. We will be closer to the figure forecasted by Inovev (45,000 units) and even lower.

While it was supposed to be produced in Emden, the production of the ID5 in Zwickau is explained by the fact that the transfer of the Passat from Emden to Turkey has not yet done, since the construction of the Turkish plant has not yet been decided.

The second model announced is the ID Buzz which will be launched in 2022 and will attempt to gradually succeed the Kombi. As for the ID5, it will be based on the Volkswagen's MEB platform, which is intended for all the group's BEVs. The ID Buzz will likely be produced at the Hanover plant, alongside the VW Kombi and Transporter. The announced price of these two new models will be around 50,000 euros, which is 10,000 euros more than the ID3 and 5,000 euros more than the ID4. The ID1 (A-segment at 20,000 euros) and ID2 (B-segment B at 30,000 euros) will be launched between 2023 and 2025.

BMW to launch i4 and iNext in 2021
BMW has announced that it will launch in 2021 its new battery electric vehicles (BEVs), the i4 sedan and the iNext SUV, in addition to the i3 sedan and iX3 SUV currently marketed by the carmaker.

The i4 model is a D-segment sedan, equivalent to a 4 Series Gran Coupé that it is presumably intended to replace. At 4.70 m long, it targets the Tesla Model 3 which is currently the best-selling electric car in the world, the best-selling in the United States and China, and one of the best-selling in Europe. Vowed to a maximum range of 450 km, the i4 sedan will be produced at the Bavarian site in Munich, alongside the 3 Series and 4 Series equipped with thermal engines. The i3 sedan (B-segment) seems threatened, as its specific shell in carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) put it at a too high price level. The price of the BMW i4 will be in the order of 75,000 euros.

The second electric model announced by BMW is the iNext which finally comes as an SUV and no longer in the form of a minivan as it had been envisaged for a time. This model seems to duplicate the BMW iX3 even if the iNext will be placed above in terms of price, at 93,000 euros (20,000 euros more than the iX3).

At this price, the iNext will not make big sales scores, but it reflects the strategy of the Bavarian carmaker (as well as that of Audi and Mercedes) to enter the category of electric cars from the top of the range.

Audi to launch Q4 E-Tron and E-Tron GT in 2021
Audi, now a 100% subsidiary of the Volkswagen group, was the brand on which future electric range was not yet cleared, especially because the group's program did not officially include Volkswagen ID3 and ID4 derivatives for this brand as it was announced for Seat and Skoda.

We know a little more about the future electric range of the Audi brand, because after the BEV E-Tron (E-segment SUV available in standard version and in coupe version called "Sportback"), the carmaker has announced the launch in 2021 of a BEV C-segment (or D-segment) SUV called Q4 E-Tron, which will be also available in standard version and in a “Sportback” coupe version. The price of these vehicles will approach 60,000 euros.

The second electric model announced by Audi in 2021 is called the E-Tron GT. This model belongs to the segment of an Audi A7 (segment E) and is based on the platform of the Porsche Taycan. The E-Tron GT would be available as a standard and Avant version, meaning in a station wagon version.

Note that in the combustion engine range, Audi has announced the launch of the so-called “Sportback” coupe version of its Q5 (D-segment SUV).

The Dacia Spring sold in Europe will be imported from China
Despite the desire of the various governments to relocate part of the automobile production in their country, as in France or in USA, the automotive industry decide on the location of their models according to their own interests. Thus, the Renault group has decided to produce in China (with Dongfeng) all the Dacia Springs sold in the world, which implies that the Springs sold in Europe will be imported from China.

The Spring, which will be the cheapest BEV (if we put aside the Citroën Ami) could thus become the best-selling car in Europe car produced in China, when today it is the MG ZS (also a BEV), which achieved 6,000 sales in the first half of 2020. The Honda Jazz having ceased to be imported from China since the launch of the last generation. It is to remember that Renault's objective is to sell 100,000 Dacia Spring each year in Europe.

The arrival of Chinese cars in Europe (mainly BEV) could therefore begin with the importation of the Dacia Spring, which is also sold in China under the name Renault K-ZE.

Renault decided at the start of the year to stop its sales of combustion engine cars in China, but to continue selling electric cars under its own brand. The problem is that Renault only sold 97 units of the K-ZE in China during the first seven months of 2020, which is not viable, and therefore exporting in large numbers to Europe would make it possible to sustain the carmaker’s production capacities on the Chinese soil.
