Korea 2017 Top 15 Models Market Review
- Of a total of 1.5 million new passenger cars sold in South Korea in 2017 (-1.8%), the Hyundai Grandeur (D segment sedan), which was completely renewed in 2016, became the best-selling car on this market, supplanting for the first time the Hyundai Sonata which had been Korean market leader for several years. The Hyundai Grandeur nearly doubled its year-over-year sales (from 69,000 to 132,000 units), while the Hyundai Sonata’s, (the automaker's other D-segment sedan), sales stagnated (from 82 000 to 83,000 units).
- Hyundai has five models in the Top 15, including three in the first three places (Grandeur, Elantra, Sonata). The following three places are held by Kia models (Sorento, Picanto, Carnival). It can be seen that of the six best-selling models in Korea, all of which belong to the Hyundai-Kia group, four are rather mid-range (D-segment) models, which suggests that the Korean market is a very different market relative to the Japanese and European markets, which favor the lower segment models (B and C).
- In the Korean Top 15, B and C segment cars are in the minority. There are six: Hyundai Elantra, Kia Picanto, Ssangyong Tivoli, Chevrolet Spark, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage. There are also five SUVs in the Korean Top 15 (Kia Sorento, Ssangyong Tivoli, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage).

Production in France has grown by almost 25% since 2013
- 说明
Production in France has grown by almost 25% since 2013
- Automobile production in France declined steadily since the beginning of the 2000s, mainly due to relocations to Spain, Eastern European countries and Morocco. In the early 2010s, the two French manufacturers committed to produce more in France. Since 2013, production in France has progressed again. In 2017, production in France reached 2.23 million vehicles (PC + LCV ) against 2.07 million in 2016, 2.04 million in 2015, 1.88 million in 2014 and 1.80 million in 2013. Growth recorded from 2013 to 2017 reaches nearly 25%.
- The relocation of the Renault Trafic and Nissan NV300 to Sandouville, the launch of the Nissan Micra in Flins and the Mercedes Citan in Maubeuge largely offset the transfer of part of the Renault Clio to Turkey and Slovenia, as well as the slow pace of the Renault Zoe. Including the Mercedes Citan, Opel Movano and Fiat Talento, Renault plants manufactured nearly 800,000 vehicles in France in 2017, against 480,000 in 2013.
- At PSA, the success of 2008, 3008, 5008, and the relocation of part of the 208, offset the transfer of the Citroën C3 to Slovakia. The launch of Opel Grandland in Sochaux has also enabled the PSA group to produce more in France. PSA factories manufactured 1,100,000 vehicles in France in 2017, compared with 930,000 in 2013. In 2017, French automobile production returned to its 2010-2011 levels.

European capacity utilization by automotive manufacturer in 2017
- 说明
European capacity utilization by automotive manufacturer in 2017
- The utilization rate of European factories reached 85% in 2017. But the distribution by manufacturers is very contrasted.
- The automakers who have most exploited their current capabilities have been the Daimler, Toyota and Tata groups that are meeting or exceeding the 100% utilization rate of their European plants in 2017. In addition, Daimler has its Mercedes Citan and Smart Forfour manufactured in Renault factories (Maubeuge and Novo Mesto), Toyota has its Proace manufactured in a PSA factory (Valenciennes) and Tata has its Jaguar E-Paces manufactured in a Magna factory (Graz).
- Daimler will have to find new capacity in the next three years to meet the demand (following the renewal and expansion of the class A, Class B, CLA, GLA, GLB range).
- The Hyundai-Kia, BMW and Renault-Nissan groups have utilization rates between 88% and 92%, which is above the overall average. Renault-Nissan improved its score compared to last year (rise in rates of the Nissan Micra). BMW is doing worse than last year as the manufacturer now has new capabilities in Born, the Netherlands.
- The PSA, Volkswagen, Ford and Geely groups are doing worse than the average (rate between 77% and 82%), but PSA improves its score compared to last year. VW suffered from dieselgate, while Ford mismanaged the transition between old and new Fiesta. Honda, FCA and Suzuki groups have the lowest rates (between 53% and 68%).

The Opel Vivaro will be renewed on a PSA platform in 2019
- 说明
The Opel Vivaro will be renewed on a PSA platform in 2019
- PSA will not have waited until 2024 to replace the Opel Vivaro, currently on a Renault Trafic base, since a new generation Vivaro, based on the Citroën Jumpy and Peugeot Expert, is announced for 2019. The new Opel Vivaro EMP2 platform will be launched just five years after the launch of the previous generation, which is very short for a utility vehicle. So we are witnessing a game of musical chairs in LCV that has transformed the Fiat Scudo on a PSA base to a Talento on a Renault base, and Opel Vivaro based on Renault to a Vivaro based on PSA. The Opel Movano will remain the only Opel utility vehicle to be based on a Renault model (Master) but it is not sure that this situation will last for many years. The new generation of Movano could be derived from the Citroën Jumper and Peugeot Boxer, thus from the Fiat Ducato.
- At the same time, PSA announces that the capacity of the Luton plant (100,000 units per year) will be better utilized (72,000 units produced in 2017) by adding Citroen Jumpy and Peugeot Expert (13,000 sales in the United Kingdom in 2017), which will relieve the Valenciennes plant which, according to PSA, will reach its saturation level in 2020 if the LCV market continues to grow at the same rate as in recent years.
- For PSA, this means finding additional capacity to continue to benefit from the growth of the LCV market in Europe. PSA sold 476,500 LCVs in 2017, for a market share of 23% of LCV sales.

Smart plans to halt sales of its thermic models in 2020
- 说明
Smart plans to halt sales of its thermic models in 2020
- Smart has announced that it plans to stop sales of its Fortwo and Forfour thermal engine models by 2020. Only the electric versions will remain in the catalog of the Daimler group's subsidiary. This strategy returns to the original concept for the brand, devised by Nicolas Hayek, at the origin of the Smart For two project. Until today, several manufacturers have announced the end of sales of their diesel cars (none having taken the risk of announcing the cessation of sales of their diesel commercial vehicles) but none of them had gone so far as to announce the stop of sales of their gasoline models.
- The bet for Smart is risky because the electric versions are only 5% of the production volume of the brand in 2017 (6,700 units sold out of a total of 135,000 units) and according to the first figures for the first quarter of 2018, the proportion of Smart models in electric versions would not exceed 15% this year.
- At this rate, this proportion could represent 25% of sales in 2019 and 35% in 2020, which is already a good result, but not 100%. It is therefore necessary to apprehend Smart's announcement as a sales target that will be difficult to achieve because stopping Smart's thermal models will not necessarily lead to a transfer of customers to the brand's electric models. In this case, a decline in Smart production would seem inevitable.
