Inovev forecasts production of 750,000 new Ford Focus per year
Ford unveils the fourth generation of the Focus whose origins date back to 1998. This international model is one of  Ford’s best-sellers (635,000 units in 2017, or nearly 10% of its global sales). It is sold in most countries of the world and produced in Germany (240,000 units in 2017), China (170,000 units), the United States (180,000 units), Argentina (30,000 units) and Russia (15,000 units).

Yet the Ford Focus has lost a lot of influence since the appearance of the Ford Escort in China in 2014, which has taken many customers away from the Focus . Focus's sales in China decreased from 400,000 units in 2013 to 170,000 in 2017, while Escort's sales increased from 0 units in 2013 to 300,000 units in 2017. As for the North American market, less fond of sedans, it has resulted in a significant decline in sales of the Focus for several years (180,000 units in 2017).

Moreover, the new generation Focus will no longer be manufactured in the United States for the North American market, but in China from where it will be imported, which will double the production of Focus in this country and recover its 2013 levels. Inovev expects production of 750,000 Focus per year worldwide, of which 250,000 in Europe, and 400,000 in China. The new Focus is equipped with petrol engines 3 cylinders 1.0 (85hp, 100hp, 125hp) and 4 cylinders 1.5 (150hp, 180hp), as well as diesel engines- only for Europe -4 cylinders 1.5 (95hp, 120hp) and 4 cylinders 2.0 (150hp).

Inovev forecasts production of 950,000 Toyota RAV4 per year
The RAV4 is the most produced SUV in the world (840,000 units in 2017), ahead of VW Tiguan (745,000), Honda CRV (695,000), Nissan Rogue (490,000) and Nissan Qashqai (475,000). It is currently manufactured in four different countries: Japan (430,000 units in 2017), Canada (250,000), China (130,000) and Russia (30,000). It is the most produced model in Japan and Asia in 2017, but also the fourth most produced in the world, behind the Ford F Series F, Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen Golf. The evolution of its production volume is spectacular, since this volume increased from 250,000 in 2005 to 450,000 in 2010, 600,000 in 2013 and 840,000 in 2017.

This is why its replacement is special, as it is crucial for Toyota. Toyota unveiled the fifth generation of the RAV4 at the 2018 New York Motor Show, which replaces the previous generation launched in 2013. The design of the new RAV4 is totally different and more similar to their luxury subsidiary Lexus’ SUV.

The new RAV4 is built on the modular TNGA platform that lowers its center of gravity. Longer by 3cm (4.60m), the RAV4 will no longer be available in diesel version (like the Honda CRV) but only in gasoline version 2.0 or hybrid version 2.5.

The success of the model is expected to continue with this new generation, and Inovev expects a production increase to between 900,000 and 950,000 units per year for the next four years.

Top-selling model in the USA in 2017 remains the Ford F-Series
Of a total of 17.24 million new vehicles sold in the United States in 2017, the Ford F Series pickup remained the best-selling model (897,000 units, + 9.3%) in front of its two direct competitors, the Chevrolet Silverado (586,000 units, + 1.9%) and the Dodge Ram (501,000 units, + 2.3%),  both of which will be renewed in 2018.

Behind these three big pick-up trucks, which have taken the first three places for decades, we can see two SUVs that are growing strongly, the Toyota RAV4 (408,000 units, + 15.7%) and the Nissan Rogue (403,000 units, + 22.3%).

The Toyota Camry, the first sedan in the rankings, is only sixth overall. It will be renewed in 2018, as will its two competitors, the Honda Accord (ninth) and the Nissan Altima (fourteenth).

In the fifteen best-selling vehicles on the US market in 2017, there are 3 Ford, 2 Chevrolet, 1 Dodge, 1 Jeep or 7 American brand models, and 3 Toyota, 3 Honda, 2 Nissan or 8 models of Japanese brands.

Japanese brands have 39% of the US market in 2017, almost as much as GM, Ford and Chrysler combined (44%). Korean and European brands are tied at 8% of the market.

Sedans account for only 35% of the US market, while SUVs reach 42%. The pickups do not exceed 16% (despite the good scores of Ford F Series, Chevrolet Silverado, Dodge Ram) and vans (MPV and vans) are at 7%.

Inovev forecasts production of 300,000 Nissan Altima per year
After the recent renewal of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the third-best-selling Japanese sedan in the US’ D / E segment, the Nissan Altima, is in turn completely renewed. This sixth generation was introduced at the 2018 New York Auto Show and will only be sold in the North American market.

The Nissan Altima accounted for 18% of sales of the brand in the United States last year, while at end of life. It could account for up to 20% of the brand's sales in 2019, even if the Rogue SUV (X-Trail in Europe) will continue to outstrip it (28% of sales in 2017).

The new Altima is longer (+ 2.5cm), wider (+ 2.3cm) and lower (-2.7cm). The wheelbase is also extended by 4.8cm. For the first time, the Altima will be available in four-wheel drive.

The engines announced are: a 4-cylinder gasoline engine of 2.5 liters developing 188hp and a 4-cylinder gasoline turbo 2.0 liters developing 248hp (which replaces the old 3.5-liter V6).

The new Nissan Altima will be produced as previously on the US site of Canton (Ohio). Given the declining influence of sedans on the US market, Inovev expects production of 300,000 units per year, compared to 262,000 in 2017 and 328,000 in 2016.

Best-selling model in China in 2017 remains the Wuling Hongguang
Of a total of 24.7 million new passenger cars sold in China in 2017, the WulingHongguang minivan (counted in the GM group) remains the best-selling model, with 537,000 units, nonetheless down 113,000 units compared to 2016 (a decrease of 17.4%). Indeed, minivans are decreasing year after year in the Chinese market, in the face of strong growth in sales of SUV, and GM Wuling sells almost only minivans. The contrast with Baojun (another Chinese subsidiary of GM) is striking as Baojun sold 364,000 Type 510 SUV in 2017 coming from 0 in 2016 (this model is in 6th place in 2017). As a result, it is uncertain that Wuling Hongguangwill remain China's sales leader in 2018.

Of all the passenger cars sold in China in 2017, 47% are sedans (compared to 49% in 2016), 40% are SUVs (compared to 36% in 2016), 8% are MPV and vans (compared to 10% in 2016) and 5% are minivans (compared to 5% in 2016). SUVs are taking market share from sedans and vans but not from minivans.

Independent Chinese automakers dominate the SUV and minivans category, but are largely in the minority in the sedan category. They have 36% of the Chinese VP market as a whole. Imports accounted for 1.07 million passenger cars in 2017 (compared with 1.1 million in 2016). The first importers remain BMW (183,000 units), Mercedes (144,000 units) and Lexus (108,000 units).
