Renault creates a second JV in China with Brilliance
- Already partnering with China's Dongfeng for the manufacture of passenger cars in Wuhan, China, Renault will create another joint venture (JV) with another Chinese manufacturer, Brilliance. It will manufacture and market light commercial vehicles primarily in China.
- Brilliance manufactures and markets passenger cars in partnership with German BMW, but it also has a subsidiary that manufactures small commercial vehicles (Shenyang Brilliance Jinbei Automobile) that is totally foreign to the agreement between Brilliance and BMW. Renault will have a 49% interest in the new JV, while Brilliance will retain 51%. According to the press release issued today, Renault aims to become a major player in the LCV market in China, a market estimated at 3 million units per year In 2016.
- Shenyang Brilliance Jinbei Automobile sold 62,673 vehicles in China and 43,178 units in the first half of 2017, representing 2% of the Chinese LCV market. The road will be long for Renault, with the help of Brilliance, to become a major player in the LCV market in China, but the agreement signed this month marks the beginning of a new opportunity for Renault to progress on the Chinese market, on which Renault arrived later than all other major western manufacturers. The objective of Renault is to sell 800,000 vehicles in China in 2020, in partnership with both Dongfeng and Brilliance.

Inovev predicts production of 50 000 Mercedes X Class per year
- Mercedes unveils its first medium-sized pickup, the X-Class derived from the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan, which is a result of cooperation between the Daimler and Renault-Nissan groups. It will be manufactured on the same production sites as these two models, namely the Nissan site in Barcelona (Spain) for the vehicles sold in Europe and the Renault site in Cordoba (Argentina) for those sold in South America.
- The Mercedes X-Class will not be marketed in North America, where medium-sized pickups have a small market share compared to large pickups like the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado or Dodge Ram.
- Other markets could be explored later by Mercedes, such as Africa (mainly South Africa), where Peugeot has just gained a foothold in the pick-up market, Australia or New Zealand.
- At launch, the Class X will feature two Nissan diesel engines: a 2.3 turbo developing 163hp and a 2.3 bi-turbo developing 190hp. In 2018, the range will be enriched by an original Mercedes V6 diesel 3.0 developing 258ch. This model will compete with the Volkswagen Amarok pickup now equipped with a V6 diesel engine developing 204hp and 225hp.
- Inovev expects a production volume of 20,000 X Class per year in Spain, 20,000 in Argentina and 10,000 in South Africa, for a total of 50,000 units in a global market of 2 million medium-sized pick-ups per year.

Inovev predicts the production of 60 000 E-Pace per year

Inovev predicts the production of 60 000 E-Pace per year
- British manufacturer Jaguar (a subsidiary of the Indian group Tata Motors) has unveiled its new compact SUV, the E-Pace (C segment) which is under the F-Pace (D segment) in Jaguar’s product range. This new SUV takes the D8 platform of the Range Rover Evoque (the smallest model of the Land Rover, brand another subsidiary of Tata Motors). It is equipped with the gasoline and diesel engines of the Evoque, namely the 4-cylinder gasoline 2.0 developing on the Jaguar 240ch and 300ch, and the 4-cylinder diesel 2.0 developing on the Jaguar 150hp, 180hp and 240hp.
- The E-Pace will be manufactured on the same production site as the Evoque (and the Discovery Sport which is also on the D8 platform), namely the Halewood plant in England, rather than Solihull, where the F-Pace which is on the Land Rover D7 platform, is produced along with the other Landrover models on this platform.
- The E-Pace is 4.40m long and competes with the Premium C segment SUVs such as the Audi Q3 (4.39m), BMW X1 (4.44m), Mercedes GLA (4.42m), Jeep Compass (4.40m), Range Rover Evoque (4.37m) and future Volvo XC40.
- Inovev expects production of 60,000 E-Pace per year at the Halewood site. This figure, which may appear low compared to F-Pace, takes into account the fact that C-segment SUVs sell very little in North America, unlike D segment SUVs such as F-Pace (10,000 units in 2016 And 10,000 units in the first half of 2017).

Inovev predicts production of 40 000 new Audi A8 per year
- Audi unveiled the new generation of the A8 limousine, which remains one of the best-selling cars in the F-segment, behind the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series.
- The new A8 is renewed one year after the Audi A4 and A5 and a year before the new Audi A6 and A7 which are due to be unveiled in 2018, like the new Audi A1. The Audi A3 will be renewed in 2019.
- The new A8 is, as previously, available in a long wheelbase version and is still manufactured at the Neckarsulm site (Germany), alongside the Audi A6 and A7. It is still not manufactured in China ( and probably never will be ).
- Its engines are still 6 cylinders (V6 3.0 gasoline TFSI of 340ch and 3.0 diesel of 285ch), 8 cylinders (V8 4.0 gasoline TFSI of 460ch and 4.0 diesel of 430ch) and 12 cylinders (W12 6.0 gasoline TFSI of 540ch). A hybrid Plug-In version called Audi e-tron is expected to complete the range in 2018. It will have a V6 3.0 gasoline TFSI engine, with an autonomy of 50 km in electric mode, with induction recharge, so with no need of any connection.
- The new A8 replaces a model dating from 2010, which sold 214,000 vehicles in seven years (an average of 30,000 units per year). Inovev predicts production of 40,000 units a year for the new Audi A8.

Renault-Nissan became the world’s largest OEM in the 1st half of 2017

Renault-Nissan became the world’s largest OEM in the 1st half of 2017
- The Renault-Nissan group became the world's largest carmaker in the first half of 2017, ahead of the Volkswagen and Toyota groups, which experienced lower sales growth.
- Indeed, the Renault-Nissan group (Renault, Dacia, Samsung, Nissan, Datsun, Infiniti, Mitsubishi and Lada) reported selling 5.27 million vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2017, up 7% from the first half 2016). The Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti) reported selling 5.16 million vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2017 (up 4.2% from the first half 2016). Toyota Group (Toyota, Lexus, Daihatsu, Hino) said it sold 5.13 million vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2017 (up 2.7% from the first half of 2016).
- The next five groups remain in the same order as last year, but the gaps between them have changed.
- Indeed, GM group (4.17 million vehicles) without its European branch is clearly distanced by the first three. However, it is ahead of Hyundai-Kia (3.74 million) and Ford (3.30 million). PSA group (2.18 million), reinforced by GM's European division, is now right behind FCA group (2.33 million), which it could surpass in 2017 or 2018. Everything will depend on the size of the US market downturn, on which FCA is very active, in 2017 and 2018.
