Global automobile production will fall by 17% in 2020
- Global automobile production (passenger cars + light utility vehicles) fell by 21% over the cumulative for the first ten months of 2020, compared to the first ten months of 2019. This drop is distributed as follows: -21.1% for passenger cars and -19.6% for light utility vehicles.
- This decline in vehicle production in 2020 is the result of the coronavirus crisis, which affected the whole world but more particularly the populations of Europe and America, those located in Asia having been less affected. The decline in vehicle production was especially significant during the spring of 2020, when most of the major countries have been locked down.
- The volume estimated by Inovev over the first ten months of 2020 is 58.9 million vehicles worldwide (PC + LUV) against 73.4 million units the previous year, which represents a decrease of 14.5 million vehicles (-21%).
- But not all countries have experienced the same evolution in their automobile production. In addition to the fact that the lock-down of the population did not take place at the same time, some countries restarted sooner than others (such as China), not to mention that other countries were less affected by the pandemic (Japan, Korea). Based on these elements, Inovev expects global automobile production to fall by 17% over the whole of 2020. This drop would represent a loss of 15 million vehicles compared to 2019, the largest decrease recorded since the end of World War II. The volume reached in 2020 would thus return to the level of 2011.

Which countries in the world were most impacted by the drop in production in 2020?
- Global automobile production (passenger cars + light utility vehicles) fell by 21% over the cumulative first 10 months of 2020, compared to the same period of 2019. The drop reached 21.4% for passenger cars, while it is lower for light utility vehicles (-19.6%).
- Regarding passenger cars, which represents 80% of the worldwide automobile production, the countries that have seen their production volume drop the most are Indonesia (-50%), Thailand (-40%) and Brazil (-39%).
- However, Asian countries have generally better resisted the coronavirus crisis and its consequences than countries located on other regions. Thus, China (-10%), Taiwan (-9%), Korea (-12%), Malaysia (-20%) and even Japan (-22%) perform well compared to other countries. Indonesia and Thailand are therefore two exceptions in an Asia less affected by the health crisis. The USA (-26%) and Mexico (-28%), as well as Russia (-23%), held up better than the European Union (-31%). India (-28%) does a little better than Europe, but significantly worse than most Asian countries.
- In terms of volume, China is stepping up its lead over other countries and today represents 31% of world production. Europe sees its share reduced to 19% of the world production, however ahead of the USA (14%) and Japan (11%).
- Mexico, India, Brazil, Canada and Russia will see their share decrease slightly in 2020. The case of Turkey is interesting as its production was significantly reduced in 2020 while the Turkish market sharply increases. This situation can be explained by a drop in its exports (resulting from the fall of foreign markets) which absorb 85% of its production.

Renault expects 30% electric versions of the Twingo
- The 100% electric version of the Renault Twingo began its commercial career. This model integrates the engine mounted on the Smart EQ Forfour, which sales should be stopped in the next two years. It is to remind that the Smart Forfour and the Renault Twingo share the same platform and that both models are produced at the Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia.
- Renault expects for the Twingo sales next year a share of 30% of electric, meaning 30,000 units out of 100,000 approximately. It is lower than the expected volume for the BEV Dacia Spring that we had calculated a few weeks ago and which we expect to reach 50,000 units in 2021-2022 then 75,000 units in 2023-2024.
- It is true that the A-segment Twingo ZE will be more expensive than the Spring from 5,000 to 6,000 euros, while being less expensive from 5,000 to 6,000 euros than the B-segment Zoe.
- The Twingo ZE is therefore situated in terms of price between the Spring and the Zoe. Its range of 190 km in the WLTP cycle while the range of the Spring is 225 km in the WLTP cycle.
- In 2021, Renault will therefore benefit from three electric models at different prices in the A and B segments, the Spring, the Twingo and the Zoé. In 2022, the future electric C-segment models will be added.

- Over the first nine months of 2020, Europe remains ahead of China in sales of 100% electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cars, as Europe has registered 772,340 BEV + PHEV models while China registered 695,131 units over the same period. Europe seems to be able to maintain its leadership position for the complete 2020 year, as in September the gap is still in its favour (160,059 cars sold compared to 131,022). China remained the leader in this market until 2019, when the Chinese government decided to revise the incentives granted for the purchase of electric cars.
- The United States and Japan continue to have a low demand for this type of vehicle, with only 190,322 units and 29,000 units respectively. The other countries have registered 97,500 vehicles of this type, for a worldwide market of 1,784,293 plug-in vehicles over the first nine months of 2020.
- Tesla remains by far the leading car maker of this vehicle type (316,820 units), ahead of the Volkswagen (208,323 units), Hyundai-Kia (123,519 units), BMW (118,592 units) and Renault-Nissan groups (111,109 units). units) which lost its second worldwide rank for this type of vehicle in 2020.
- The Renault Zoe regained its first rank from the Tesla Model 3 in Europe in 2020, but this was not enough for the Renault-Nissan group to maintain its worldwide position.

Inovev plans 275,000 units per year of the new Renault Kangoo and Express
- Between 1997 (date of its launch) and 2012, the Renault Kangoo was the only light utility vehicle in its segment within the Renault group, sold in Europe and North Africa. Since the introduction of the Dacia Dokker in 2012, it has steadily gained market share from the Renault Kangoo. While in 2005 Renault produced around 225,000 Kangoo, in 2019 as many Kangooas Dokker were produced, meaning nearly 125,000 units each. Totally, in 2019, the Kangoo-Dokker duo sells almost as much as the Kangoo alone in 2005.
- Renault has unveiled the third generation of its light utility Kangoo and Express, which will compete with the Citroën Berlingo, Peugeot Partner, Opel Combo, Volkswagen Caddy and Fiat Doblo. Four separate versions will be released in spring 2021.
- The new Kangoo will be produced on the French plant in Maubeuge in two versions: one proposed in a utility version (Kangoo Van) and the other in a passenger car version (Kangoo). These two versions will be based on the CMF-C / D platform, also used by the Mégane, Scénic, Espace and Talisman. They will be powered by gasoline, diesel or electric motors. The short wheel base version (named Bebop) will not be renewed unlike the long wheel base versions.
- The Renault Express will be produced at the Moroccan plant in Tangier and will replace the Dacia Dokker which will disappear at the end of the year 2020. The Renault Express takes its the name from an old Renault van marketed between 1985 and 2000. As for the Kangoo, one will be proposed in a utility version (Express Van) and the other in a passenger car version (Express).
- It is to be noted that the only the utility version of the Express will be marketed in Europe. The engines of the Express and Express Van will be the same as those of the Kangoo (1.3 gasoline and 1.5 diesel), but they will not be equipped with an electric motorization. The Express will be cheaper than the Kangoo, as it will take over the low-cost platform of the Dacia Dokker.
- Inovev forecasts 150,000 units per year of the new Renault Kangoo and 125,000 units per year of the new Renault Express.
