Germany produced 5 times more BEVs than France or Spain in 2023
Germany produced nearly 900,000 BEVs (battery electric vehicles) in 2023, or 17% of its automobile production volume (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) and 5 times more than France or Spain over the same period.

The lead taken by Germany is explained above all by the ramp-up of Tesla, which produces the Model Y near Berlin, to nearly 200,000 units in 2023 and by the number of models produced in the country (around twenty compared to a dozen in France).

But in addition, we note the concentration in Germany of the BEVs production from the Volkswagen group (ID3, ID4, ID5, ID7, ID Buzz, Q4 E-Tron, Taycan, E-Tron GT) which represent more than 440,000 units last year, representing almost half of all BEVs produced in Germany in 2023. BMW also concentrates the production of its BEVs in Germany (i4, i5, i7, iX, iX1, iX2) which represent more than 150,000 units last year. The same for Mercedes (EQA, EQC, EQE, EQS, e-Sprinter) with BEVs represented more than 100,000 units last year. The battery electric version of the Opel Astra is also produced in Germany (around 5,000 units in 2023).

France and Spain only produce a dozen BEVs each, with production volumes often very low. Renault only produced less than 100,000 BEVs last year in France, including the Nissan Townstar and Mercedes EQT produced in Renault plants. The Zoé is at the end of its life and the Scénic E-Tech is barely starting. Renault will thus produce 60% of the BEVs produced in France in 2023. The Renault 5 E-Tech, Scénic E-Tech and Trafic ZE will try to boost BEV production in France. Stellantis only produced less than 50,000 BEVs in France last year (30% of BEVs produced in France in 2023). Smart will cease production in spring 2024. In Spain, the most produced models are the Opel Corsa and Peugeot 208 which have not yet reached 30,000 units in 2023.
Germany produced 35% of the xEVs made in Europe in 2023
European countries (EU + UK + EFTA) produced 3,455,337 xEVs (BEV + PHEV + HEV) in 2023, compared to 2,418,313 in 2022, representing an increase of 43% in one year, a growth that accelerates because the increase observed in 2022 compared to 2021 did not exceed 20%.

Among these xEVs produced in Europe in 2023, there were 1,718,674 BEVs (+53% compared to 2022), 1,028,363 PHEVs (+39%) and 708,300 HEVs (+28%). In this category, Germany produces 35% of xEVs produced in Europe in 2023.

In the BEV category, Germany takes a considerable lead over other countries, with nearly 900,000 vehicles produced with three very involved carmakers (Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes) which concentrate the majority of their BEV production there and Tesla, which produced nearly 200,000 Model Ys there last year. Far behind Germany, France (165,000 units) and Spain (155,000 units) are neck and neck.

In the PHEV category, Germany is well ahead of other countries, with 333,000 vehicles produced, while Spain not exceeding 125,000 vehicles produced.

In the HEV category, France remains the leading producing country thanks to Toyota which accounts for the majority of the 255,000 vehicles produced in the country, ahead of the United Kingdom (180,000 units) mainly represented by Toyota.
The Tesla Model Y became the most produced vehicle in the world in 2023
The ranking of the 25 most produced vehicles in the world in 2023 shows significant changes in the hierarchy of the different models. The large Ford F Series pick-up (933,198 units) is losing its leading position, which it has held many times over the past twenty years, and is being supplanted by two models in 2023: the Tesla Model Y which is becoming the world's most produced car (1,137,885 units) followed by the Toyota RAV4 which takes second place (989,517 units). In fourth place, another Toyota model, the Corolla (869,228 units) which is ahead of the Honda CRV (679,832 units). The first five places are therefore occupied by three SUVs (Tesla Model Y, Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV), a first in history.

The large Ram pick-up (competitor of the Ford F Series) occupies sixth place (651,581 units), followed by the Toyota Hilux pick-up (646,975 units). In eighth place, another Toyota, the Camry (645,915 units) is the brand's fourth model, among the eight best-selling models in the world. This seems quite logical given that the Toyota group remains by far the world's leading carmaker in 2023. In ninth place, the BYD Song (645,264 units) is ahead of the Tesla Model 3 (636,519 units), Chevrolet Silverado (633,663 units) and Toyota Corolla Cross (620,094 units).

For the first time, four BYD models appear in the Top 25. In addition to the good performance of Toyota models (five models in the Top 25), we also note the good performance of Honda models (four models in the Top 25). German carmakers place four models (2 Volkswagen, 1 Mercedes, 1 BMW). The Koreans two models. The Americans two models.
Chrysler has produced 15 million MPVs since 1983
The differentiation between a MPV and an SUV is quite difficult to define, because it encompasses several differences which, taken one by one, do not allow the two categories of vehicles to be differentiated, but which taken together do. The differentiation of sedan vs MPV and MPV vs SUV is in reality a marketing concept.

The former Chrysler group, now part of the Stellantis consortium, was the true pioneer of MPVs in 1983, a few months before the Renault Espace based on a Matra project which had been refused by the management of the PSA Peugeot-Citroën group.Today, Chrysler is one of the few non-Asian carmakers to still believe in this type of family vehicle which has practically disappeared from the North American and European markets due to the massive arrival of SUVs. These SUVs seem to better meet the demand of customers on these markets.

Since 2016, Chrysler has continued to market the Pacifica MPV, which is the direct heir of the old Plymouth Voyager, Chrysler Voyager and Dodge Caravan MPVs marketed between 1983 and 2020. Since 1983, Chrysler has produced 15 million MPVs, making it the largest MPV producer in history.

The MPV market developed in the United States from the models marketed by Chrysler, from the mid-1980s, helped by the new models of Ford and GM. The MPV market represented up to 1.3 million units in this region during the best years, before collapsing in the 2010s, due to the massive arrival of SUVs. In 2023, only 300,000 MPVs were sold in the USA. In Europe (EU + UK + EFTA), the MPV market represented up to 2.3 million units in 2006 (thanks to the launch of compact MPVs like the Renault Scénic) before collapsing with the arrival of SUV. In 2023, only 200,000 MPVs were sold in Europe.
BYD had 25% of the Chinese BEV market in 2023
In a recent Auto Analysis, Inovev compared the share of BEV in the global sales of the different European carmakers in 2023. It seems interesting and relevant to analyse the share of BEV in the sales of the different Chinese carmakers in 2023, in China.

BEVs represents 24% of the Chinese market in 2023 but few Chinese carmakers only propose BEVs, not even BYD which sells almost half of PHEVs. Some Chinese groups have brands dedicated to electric motors, but there are currently only three independent 100% electric Chinese brands: NIO, Xpeng and Hozon.

The carmaker Leapmotor sells a little less than 75% of BEV, GAC a little less than 55% like BYD. BAIC sells just under 50% of BEV, SAIC just under 35% and Dongfeng just under 30%. The other Chinese carmakers each sell less than 24% of BEVs.

If we focus on the Chinese BEV market, who are the leading carmakers in this market? BYD is the undisputed leader in this market, with a share of 26%, ahead of Tesla (15%), which is not Chinese but which produces locally, Wuling (9%), a Chinese brand but co-owned by GM, GAC (8%), Geely (6%) and SAIC (6%). The other carmakers each occupy less than 5% of the Chinese BEV market.
