GM Korea production should stabilise at 500 000 vehicles/year over the next years
Following the sale of some of its subsidiaries (Opel and Vauxhall), the abandon of several markets (Europe, Russia, India, South Africa) and the continuing decline in the production volume of its Korean subsidiary (notably following the abandon of the European market), the GM group wanted to reassure  GM Korea employees.

The US manufacturer (now the world's fourth-largest carmaker) said it did not intend to stop its activities in South Korea, contrary to what was inferred by  information circulated in the Korean media.

In 2016, the GM Korea subsidiary produced 569,000 vehicles at its three sites in Pupyong, Changwon and Kunsan, compared with 598,000 units in 2015, 673,000 units in 2014, 768,000 units in 2013, 795,000 units in 2012 and 814,000 units units in 2011.

This steady decline (-30% in five years) reflects a real disillusionment with the GM Korea models, which is mainly due to the abandon of the European Chevrolet brand (almost 200,000 sales a year), of which most of the models  were manufactured in Korea.

The stop of production of  the Opel Antara (replaced by the Opel Grandland manufactured in France) and the gradual transfer of Opel Mokka's production to Europe should again impact GM Korea's manufacturing volume over the next few years. The volume of GM Korea is expected to fall to 500,000 vehicles per year over the next few years.

Inovev predicts that Volvo will produce 50,000 XC 40s per year
Volvo, the Swedish carmaker subsidiary of the Chinese group Geely, has unveiled its first compact SUV (C segment), the XC40, which extends its SUV range, currently composed of XC60 (D segment) and XC90 (E segment) to the lower range. Its length is 4.42m vs. 4.69m for the XC60 and 4.95m for the XC90.

The XC40 competes with the Premium C segment SUVs such as the BMW X1 (4.44m), Mercedes GLA (4.42m), Audi Q3 (4.39m), Jaguar E-Pace (4.41m) or Infiniti QX30 (4.43m).

The XC40 is the first Volvo model to use the new CMA platform jointly developed by Volvo and Geely.

This new SUV will be equipped with several engines, including the 4-cylinder 2 liter diesel D3 -150hp  and D4 -190hp. The gasoline engines will be available from April 2018: a three-cylinder T3 - 150hp and  four-cylinder T4 - 190hp and  the new small diesel D2 engine, as well as a rechargeable hybrid and a 100% electric version, as of  the beginning 2019.

The XC40 will be manufactured at the Volvo site in Gent (Ghent) in Belgium, while the XC60 and XC90 are manufactured at the Volvo site in Gothenburg, Sweden. Inovev expects an annual volume of 50,000 units at Gent, not counting the vehicles that could be manufactured in China on Geely production sites.

GM targets 500 000 EV sales in China in 2025
The GM group is very active in the Chinese market, which represents 40% of its global sales (compared with 30% for the USA) and has become its first market. GM is second in China (16% market share in the first 8 months of 2017), behind the Volkswagen group (17% market share in the first 8 months of 2017).

- GM has five brands in China: Buick (5.0% SOM), Wuling (3.9% SOM), Baojun (3.7% SOM), Chevrolet (2.2% SOM) and Cadillac 0.7% SOM). Of these five brands, two are strong (Cadillac + 88% and Baojun + 32%), two are stable (Buick and Chevrolet) and one is significantly down (Wuling -18.5%).

GM's strategy in China is now to develop a whole range of electric vehicles to sell locally, thus meeting the Chinese government's demand to promote the massive development of electric vehicles in all manufacturers producing in China.

- In this perspective, GM, in partnership with SAIC, which manufactures GM vehicles in China, will design and launch several electric and hybrid rechargeable vehicles over the period 2020-2025.

The goal of GM is to sell 150,000 vehicles of this type in 2020 and 500,000 in 2025. The VW Group, meanwhile, aims to sell 400,000 vehicles of this type in 2020 and 1,500,000 in 2025.

Inovev expects 70 000 annual sales for the new Ford Ecosport
The Ecosport is Ford’s current  B segment SUV. It dates from 2014 and the vehicles sold in Europe so far have come from the Ford factory in Chennai. This will change from the end of this year as the Ecosports  sold in Europe will come from Ford's Romanian factory in Craiova.

At this time, , the Ecosport will  restyled, adopting a grille inspired by that of the Kuga and receiving a two-tone painting, which is  very fashionable on B segment SUVs (Renault Captur, Citroën C3 Aircross, Opel Crossland, Seat Arona ).

This restyled version of the Ecosport was presented at the Frankfurt 2017 show. This model competes with all the segment B SUVs, such as Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Citroën C3 Aircross, Opel Crossland, Opel Mokka, Fiat 500 X, Seat Arona as well as the two Korean SUVs that will be marketed from the end of the year, Hyundai Kona and Kia Stonic.

Inovev  estimates that the Ford Ecosport  could be produced at 70,000 units per year at the Craiova site. Over the first 8 months of 2017, this model was sold at 43,000 units in Europe, which is equivalent to a volume of 60,000 units per year. The restyling and transfer to  a European site, as well as the continued growth of sales of SUVs on the European continent, should make it possible to achieve a higher volume of sales than today. So, like Meriva at Opel, the Ford B segment  MPV (B-Max) that is produced today  in Craiova seems seriously threatened.

BMW will launch 12 electric models between 2019 and 2025
While Mercedes plans to launch 10 different 100% electric models between 2020 and 2025, BMW has announced that it will launch 12 100% electric models between 2019 and 2025. The next will be a family sedan probably dubbed i5, sized between a 3 Series sedan and a 5 Series sedan. This will be the third 100% electric model proposed by BMW, which will be located between i3 (B segment) and i8 (F segment).

The i5 will be marketed from 2020, or at the latest in 2021. A concept called i Vision Dynamics presented at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show anticipates the line of the future i5 sedan, whose autonomy would not be less than 600 km.

BMW exhibited another 100% electric model at the Frankfurt 2017 show: a Mini electric concept that anticipates the future electric mini sedan scheduled for 2019.

- The electric X3 is expected for 2020. This will be the first 100% electric SUV of the brand and one of the first 100% electric SUVs of all brands.

Ultimately, the range of BMW's 100% electric vehicles should be as follows: BMW brand models, which will be badged i (the sub-brand dedicated to this type of vehicles), Mini models and Rolls Royce models.

Inovev  expects BMW  to produce 400,000 electric vehicles annually by 2025.
