Diesel motorisation rates - passenger cars registrations - in Europe, France and Germany
- In 2016, 50% of new Passenger Cars (PC) sold in Europe were equipped with diesel engines, compared with nearly 56% in 2011.
Gasoline engines were installed on 47% of the new cars sold. It is to note that into gasoline engines, nearly 40% are equipped with direct injection technology.
Finally, electrified vehicles (BEV/ HPEV/ HEV i.e. respectively Battery Electric Vehicles, Hybrid Plug-in Electric Vehicles and Hybrid Electric Vehicles) account for 3% of new vehicle sales.

- The rate of dieselization of new cars in Europe has been slowly decreasing since 2016.
The evolution was however quite different in France and Germany.
France has suffered from a non-justified bashing of diesel (2016 diesel engines sold in 2016 had quasi the same standards of emissions as gasoline engines sold in 2016), while decline in Germany was much smaller due to the higher proportion of high range cars and a more thought environmental policy.

- Due to the current situation, Inovev forecasts a further decline in sales of diesel cars by 2020 (the rate should fall from 50% to 44%).
This expected decrease would be the consequence of:
This expected decrease would be the consequence of:
• Increasingly stringent regulations on diesel, resulting in higher development cost and selling price of diesel engine (compared to the petrol engine)
• The reduction in the diesel supply on segment A and B vehicles, which are significant segments in Europe
• The technological progress of gasoline engines, particularly in terms of consumption thanks to the development of direct injection price (but which will increase the price of gasoline engines and increase their particulates emission)
• The increase in sales of electrified vehicles over the next few years (with however still a limited impact within the 5 years to come)

Toyota unveils the new Generation of Camry
- The Japanese carmaker Toyota unveiled the eighth generation of the Camry sedan (D-segment) at the Detroit Motor Show.
- The Camry is part of the D segment sedans like the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima. It remains since 2002 the most sold sedan in the United States.
- In 2016, 389,000 Camry were sold in the United States, including 22,500 hybrid units( hybrids representing therefore less than 6% of Camry’s sale). The objective of Toyota is to sell 400,000 Camry per year on this market including 10% of hybrid versions.
- The new Toyota Camry will be produced in the US, in Georgetown, Washington, as before, at a rate of 400,000 units per year.
The Lafayette plant (located in Louisiana), owned by Subaru, will no longer be used as a complement.

Production achievements (PC+UV): Europe 10 months 2016 and forecast 2017
- Nearly 80% of car production in Europe (European Union 29 countries + Turkey + Serbia) is sold in Europe each year.
The level of the European market (registrations) has therefore a very great impact on the volume of production achieved in Europe.
The level of the European market (registrations) has therefore a very great impact on the volume of production achieved in Europe.
- The European market grew significantly in 2015 (+ 9,4%) and in 2016 (+ 7.2%). For 2017, Inovev expects a lower growth (+3,5%) of the European market (see analyses by country).
- Taking this parameter into account and in line with the good performance of exports, European car production is expected to increase by 3% in 2017, while it increased by 4.5% in 2016 and by 7.9% in 2015.
- Thanks to the growth of the European market and exports, European production reached nearly 20 million units by 2016, though not reaching the 2007 peak (19.8 millions against 20.2 millions respectively).
- Not all European countries will move in the same way in 2017, as Germany will remain stable, while Spain, Italy, France and even Great Britain are expected to see a slight increase in output.
- Automobile production continues to move from west to east Europe (this region accounts for 25% of European production in 2016, compared with 24% in 2014 and only 15% in 2005).

- Details
Ford releases its 2018-2019 plan relating to its vehicle production
- On the occasion of the 2017 Las Vegas CES and the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, the Ford group announced:
• A plan of development of 13 electrified vehicles (HEV / PHEV / BEV) and autonomous vehicles, of which 7 models will be produced in the next 5 years. These models will include F-150 (HEV) pickups, Mustang (HEV), Transit Custom (PHEV), and an SUV (BEV).
• The cancellation of the construction of the plant in San Luis Potosi (Mexico).
• The expansion of the Flat Rock, Michigan plant to produce hybrid and electric vehicles.
• The transfer of the Ford Focus from the Wayne, Michigan plant to the Hermosillo plant in Mexico.
• The arrival of the future Ford Ranger and Bronco in the plant in Wayne, Michigan, replacing the Ford Focus.
- This plan would result in:
• The transfer of the next generation of Focus (150,000 units per year) from the Wayne site to the Hermosillo plant, where the Ford Fusion is currently produced.
• A partial transfer of the production of the Ford Fusion (150,000 units per year) in 2018 from the Hermosillo site to Flat Rock, Michigan, which currently produces the Ford Mustang and the Lincoln Continental. This site should therefore specialize in the production of electrified and autonomous vehicles.
• The production of the future Ranger and Bronco (150,000 units per year) in Wayne plant in 2019, just after the transfer of the new generation of Focus to the Hermosillo plant.

FCA confirms its plan relating to its vehicle production in the USA
- The FCA group recently communicated on its plan to produce vehicles in the US. This plan is based on the product plans announced in 2014, 2015 and 2016, as well as on the US vehicle production strategy, presented in July 2016.
- In 2014 and 2015, FCA announced in its product plan the release of the new Jeep Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer and Wrangler Pick-Up vehicles. At the end of 2016, FCA announced that production of the Dodge Dart and Chrysler 200 sedans had been stopped. Detailed analyzes of these various announcements are available on the Inovev platform.
- In July 2016, FCA had communicated its strategy of vehicle production in the US. The strategy is to produce only SUVs and Pick-ups on American soil.
- The latest communication from FCA clarified the production plan in the USA, which includes:
• the next generation of the Dodge Ram Pick-Up 1500 (transferred from Mexico to the US);
• three new Jeep vehicles: the Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer and a Pick-Up (likely the Wrangler).
- The Dodge Ram range is the most sold range of the FCA group, with more than 600,000 vehicles produced each year (55% in the US and 45% in Mexico).
The Dodge Ram range is composed of the Ram 1500, Ram 2500/3500, Ram Mega Cab, Ram 3500 Chassis Cab, Ram 4500/5500 and DX Chassis Cab (for the Mexican market). In 2016, 596,810 vehicles were sold in the three NAFTA countries, of which 489,418 in the USA, 89,666 in Canada and 17,726 in Mexico.

- The current version of the Dodge Ram 1500 is manufactured on two sites: one in the USA (Warren) and the other one in Mexico (Saltillo). The next generation of the Dodge Ram 1500, expected to be released in 2019, will now be manufactured at the two US sites in Warren, Michigan and Sterling Heights, Michigan. The latter is currently ending the manufacture of the Chrysler 200 sedan that will not be replaced.
- As for Jeep, FCA has announced the arrival of three new models in its American plants.
The Warren (Michigan) plant will produce the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs, while the Toledo (Ohio) plant will produce a Jeep pickup, in addition to the current Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler.
The Warren (Michigan) plant will produce the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs, while the Toledo (Ohio) plant will produce a Jeep pickup, in addition to the current Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler.
- In conclusion, four FCA plants will be impacted by this plan:
• In USA
ØThe Warren plant which currently produces the Dodge Ram 1500, will produce by the side the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.
With 316 000 units produced in 2016, the plant should consequently increase its production by at least 50 000 units per year in its first years.
With 316 000 units produced in 2016, the plant should consequently increase its production by at least 50 000 units per year in its first years.
ØThe Sterling Heights plant, which currently produces only the Chrysler 200 (76 000 units), will replace it with the Dodge Ram 1500 (with higher volume than the Chrysler 200). Consequently the production of the Sterling Heights plant should increase.
ØThe Toledo plant (480,000 units in 2016) which currently produces the Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee will add the Jeep pick up, what should increase the production of the plant.
• In Mexico
Øthe Saltillo plant (281,000 units in 2016), will continue to produce the Dodge Ram 2500/3500, Ram Mega Cab, Ram 3500 Chassis Cab, Ram 4500/5500 and DX Chassis Cab (for the Mexican market), but will lose the Ram 1500 which will be transferred to the Sterling Heights plan (see here above)
ØConsequently the production of the Saltillo plant should mechanically decrease, unless new models are added.
