Market achievements Europe 29 countries – TOP15 PC models

Out of a total of 15.11 million new passenger cars  (PC) sold in Europe (29 countries: European Union - Malta + Switzerland + Norway) in 2016, Inovev  constructed the model breakdown relating to 95% of this market.

The VW Golf remains the best-selling car, with a total of 539,000 units, although it is down from 2015 (-9.6%). The VW Polo (297,000 units, + 2.1%) kept its second position, ahead of the Renault Clio (293,000 units, + 2.4%) and Ford Fiesta (288,000 units, -5.1%). The Polo and Fiesta will be replaced in the year 2017.

Follow the Opel Corsa (251,000 units, -1.9%), already on the decline, the Peugeot 208 (242,000 units, + 8.1%) and the Opel Astra (225,000 units, +27.6 %) which was launched at the end of 2015 and displays  the highest growth rate among the Top 15,

Despite flat sales, the Nissan Qashqai (217,000 units, + 0.9%) remains the most sold SUV in Europe in 2016 ahead of the Renault Captur (207,000 units, + 10.3%), the second most sold SUV in Europe.

The Ford Focus (194,000 units, -9.8%), the VW Passat (192,000 units, -11.5%) decreased sharply while the sales of the Skoda Octavia (191,000 units, + 4.3%) remain resilient.

Finally, the Peugeot 308 (188 000 units, - 9.5%), already on decline, the Audi A3 (183,000 units, -4.7%) and the Fiat Panda (179,000 units, up 6.0% year-on-year) ) end the Top 15 rating.

Inovev forecasts a production of 75,000 units / year for Opel Crossland X

Opel unveiled the replacement of the Meriva MPV (B-segment) which was launched in 2010 and restyled in 2013. It is no longer really a minivan but rather a crossover strongly inspired by B-segment SUVs. This is the reason why the carmaker changed its name into Crossland X, the letter X designating all the current and future SUVs of the Opel brand. In the Opel SUV range, the Mokka is now called Mokka X and the future C-segment SUV based on the Peugeot 3008 platform will be called Grandland X.

The Crossland X is based on the platform of the Peugeot 2008 and the future Citroën C3 Aircross, according to the GM-PSA agreements. The engines of the Opel Crossland X are not yet known, but it seems that GM will opt for the PSA engines used on the Peugeot 2008: a 3-cylinder petrol 1.2 and a 4-cylinder diesel 1.6.

The new Opel Crossland X is 4.21m long (the Peugeot 2008 measuring 4.16m) and competes directly with the Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Fiat 500X and Opel Mokka X (4.28m long) which is positioned on the same market segment, which was launched in 2012 and is expected to be replaced in 2019 or 2020.

The future Opel Crossland X will be produced in 2017 on the GM site of Zaragoza (Spain).
Inovev forecasts worldwide sales of 75,000 units for the Crossland X, compared to the 150,000 units of the Mokka X.
These two models with a quite close market positioning could eventually compete with each other.

VW Golf, Passat and Audi A3 declined in 2016

Volkswagen Golf, Passat and Audi A3 declined by 9.6%, 11.5% and 4.7%, respectively, in a European market (Europe 29 countries: EU - Malta + Norway + Swiss) of passenger cars, which rose by 6.5% in 2016.

Three assumptions can be advanced:

• The disaffection of consumers for sedans for the benefit of SUVs, as shown by the statistics of recent years. But in the same market segment as the Golf and A3 (C-segment sedan), the Opel Astra increases its sales by 27.6%, the Renault Mégane by 13.4%, the Mercedes Class A 17.7 %.

• The life cycle of the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. But these two vehicles were both launched in 2012 and therefore should not be replaced before the end of 2018.

• The Volkswagen diesel cheating case.
This case would have had a small but real impact on the European sales of the brand and the Volkswagen group (-0.4% of sales for the brand and + 3.3% for the group). The Volkswagen brand is one of the few to decrease in Europe in 2016, during a period when the European market is flourishing, and Volkswagen has launched two new high-volume models, the
Tiguan and the Touran. Only these models have progressed in 2016, at Volkswagen.

Lexus unveils the new generation of LS

The Japanese carmaker Toyota launched the luxury brand Lexus in 1989. Originally, the models were marketed in the United States, where the Premium category has always been significant. Then Lexus models were offered on most other markets. But the USA still remains the leading market of the brand (330,000 units out of 590,000 worldwide sales).

It was at the Detroit 2017 show that Toyota chose to present the new generation of its high-end sedan, the Lexus LS.
This new sedan, positioned in F-segment, competes as before in the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Jaguar XJ, Tesla Model S, Maserati
Quattroporte, but also the recent Genesis G90.

The new Lexus LS is available with a petrol engine V6 biturbo of 3.5 liters developing 415ch. It will be available a little later with a hybrid engine (like all other Lexus brand models) of the same displacement and more powerful.

The LS will still be produced in Tahara, Japan where the production level of the older generation has declined significantly in recent years (less than 10,000 units in 2016).
A return to levels of around 20,000 to 25,000 units per year can be envisaged in an optimistic scenario.

Main novelties presented at 2017 Detroit Motorshow

Fourteen all brand-new models have been presented at the 2017 edition of the Detroit Auto Show, as well as two concept cars close to series production vehicles for the US, but also European and Asian markets.

Into the new products, 5 are of German nationality, 5 of Japanese nationality, 3 of Chinese nationality, 2 of American nationality and 1 of Korean nationality.

These new models certainly target the US market, but however only 5 models will be produced locally.
Other vehicles will come from China (GAC
Trumpchi), Germany (BMW 5 Series), Japan (Lexus LS), Mexico (VW Tiguan LWB), South Korea (Kia Stinger) or Slovakia (Audi Q8).

Into the novelties presented, two are in the concept car stage (VW I.D Buzz and Nissan Vmotion 2.0) but should give rise to short-term production models. The Audi Q8 and Infiniti QX50 can be considered very close to their  production versions.

Not surprisingly for the US market, the segments most represented in this show are the E-segment (7 novelties) and D-segment (6 novelties), followed by the F-segment (2 new) and C-segment (1 novelty).

At the image of other US markets but also European and Chinese markets, the show in Detroit has mostly displayed SUV vehicles (8 new products)  and sedan vehicles (6 new products), while the MPV has become a neglected market (1 novelty and 1 concept).

Finally, while some introduced vehicles were already in production by the end of 2016, the majority of new products are expected to leave the plants in 2017.
