Inovev forecasts 40,000 units per year of the Citroën C5 X
The Citroën brand (one of the many brands of the new Stellantis group) has unveiled its new D-segment model replacing the old C5 (2007-2017), which disappeared from French assembly lines four years ago. To replace the C5 sedans and station wagons, the brand preferred not to compete the Peugeot 508 frontally, and show its difference with a car with a cross over line, a bit like the recent C4. The new C5 is therefore called C5 X to clearly assert its character inspired from the SUV style, even if the C5 Aircross which remains in the Citroën range, is the truth SUV of the brand.

Another specificity, the Stellantis group has considered a better option to produce the C5 X in China (in Chengdu, at Dongfeng) rather than in France, indicating that the market for this category of vehicles is seven times larger in China than in France. It is true, but the Citroën brand only represents 0.1% of the Chinese market today, and it will be very difficult to impose this type of model on this market. Inovev estimates the sales of this model to be 5,000 to 10,000 units per year in China and 25,000 to 30,000 per year in Europe. The C5 X will therefore be imported from China for the European market, like the Dacia Spring, the DS 9 or the BMW iX3.

The C5 X, which is 4.80 m long (more than a Citroën CX or a Citroën XM) will be equipped with a petrol engine and a plug-in hybrid petrol engine, also available on the Peugeot 508 launched in 2018, i.e. the two 180 hp and 225 hp versions of the 1.598 cc engine (code EP). No diesel available on this model, probably because there is no diesel engine produced in China, since this market is not demanding.

Tesla produced 180,000 BEVs in the first quarter of 2021
Tesla produced 180,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) worldwide in the first quarter of 2021, which is the equivalent to an annual rate of around 720,000 units, which would represent an increase of more than 40% in 2021 compared to 2020. Compared to Q1-2020, the increase has already reached 102% as Tesla's production did not exceed 89,000 units last year over the period. It should be noted that production in China of Tesla didn’t start yet at this time. Today, Tesla's Chinese plant produces 25,000 vehicles per month. In addition, the Berlin plant could start up before the end of the year (or early 2022), which will boost Tesla's production growth.

Tesla's sales reached 184,800 units over the same period, suggesting that there was a stock of vehicles at the end of last year, maybe over 5,000 units. The best-selling models in the first quarter of 2021 were the Model 3 and Model Y which account for 80% of Tesla's sales.

The Californian carmaker's sales targets for 2021 are 850,000 units worldwide, which would consolidate its first place in the world in the category of BEVs.

What seemed very optimistic a few years ago is about to happen: Tesla is on track to sell a million electric vehicles by 2022.

Toyota launched the Highlander to compete the Ford Explorer in European market
Ford had decided in 2020 to launch in Europe its large Explorer SUV (5.06 m long ; E-segment ) which has been very successful in the United States for several years. Until now the American carmaker was focused to sell on the European continent SUVs of more reasonable dimensions, such as the Ecosport (4.10 m long ; B-segment), the Puma (4.20 m ; B-segment), the Kuga (4.60 m ; C-segment) and the Edge (4.80 m ; D-segment).

The Explorer is a mid-range SUV for the US market, but in Europe it ranks among the bigger SUVs. There was therefore a risk of offering the Explorer on the European market, especially as the Edge was not successful there: this SUV introduced in Europe in 2016 has sold 45,000 copies in five years, or 9 000 per year. In 2020, it sold 3,500 units, up from 8,212 in 2019 and 8,225 in 2018. Today, the Edge is stopped in Europe.

Ford thought it could ensure the Explorer's success by equipping it with a 3.0-liter plug-in hybrid 6-cylinder engine. But only 2,000 units were sold in Europe in 2020.

Despite this poor result, Toyota wanted to compete the Explorer by offering its Highlander in Europe. This large 4.97 m-long SUV sold mainly in the United States has a 2.5-liter non-plug-in hybrid 4-cylinder engine. Less heavy than the Explorer (2,135 kg against 2,465 kg), the Highlander intends to attract customers looking for an SUV more spacious than the RAV4, as it can carry up to seven passengers like the Explorer. The Highlander is sold in Europe since January 2021, and it sold 260 copies in two months. The price of the Highlander is 65,000 euros compared to 75,000 euros for a Ford Explorer.

Inovev forecasts 75,000 units per year of the new Kia EV6
Kia has unveiled its new battery electric vehicle (BEV) based on the e-GMP common platform used for all electric models of the Hyundai-Kia group. At Hyundai, we saw the launch of the Ioniq 5 based on this platform which will be followed by several other models in 2022 and 2023. At Kia, we see the launch of this EV6 today, also followed by other models in 2022 and 2023. The Korean carmaker is getting ready for battle to launch its offensive in the electric vehicle market, like other carmakers. Eventually, Hyundai and Kia could market a dozen of different models on this platform, including six from Hyundai and six from Kia. However, the two brands want to differentiate themselves in terms of design, as the Kia EV6 is very different from the Ioniq 5.

The Kia EV6 is 4.68 m long compared to 4.64 m for the Ioniq 5. Its battery provides 500 km of range compared to 460 km for the Ioniq 5, according to the WLTP cycle.

Kia emphasizing the sporty side of its EV6 (while Hyundai favors the family side), a GT version will be available, with a power of 535 hp (430 kW) against 325 hp (239 kW) and 228 hp (168 kW) for both basic versions. This GT version can reach 250 km per hour at top speed, like an Audi E-Tron GT or a Porsche Taycan. The communicated prices are 48,000 euros for the 168 kW version, 56,000 euros for the 239 kW version and 67,000 euros for the 430 kW version.

Kia expects to sell a total of 880,000 electric cars worldwide in 2030. Inovev forecasts 75,000 Kia EV6 sales per year in the medium term.

Inovev forecast 90,000 units per year of the new Volvo C40
The Swedish carmaker Volvo (a subsidiary of the Chinese group Geely) has unveiled the coupe version of its XC40 SUV (C-segment), thus following the strategy of other premium carmakers such as Audi, BMW or Mercedes who have developed a range of “coupe –SUVs”. The new model launched by Volvo is named C40, thus showing its link with the XC40.

This name is also reminiscent of the old Volvo C30 (three-door B-segment coupe), C70 (D-segment coupe-convertible) and V40 (C-segment four-door sedan).

Based on Volvo's CMA platform, the C40 will try to capture a younger target than the XC40, XC60 and XC90. The first model presented is equipped with the 100% electric motor of the XC40 Recharge, but we can assume that it will also be available later in thermal and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions like the XC40. The package electric motor + battery (78 kWh) enables the 100% electric C40 (named “Recharge”) to cover a distance of 420 km according to the WLTP cycle.

According to Inovev, the new Volvo C40 could account for almost half of XC40 sales, or 90,000 units per year. The two models which share many components will be produced in the same plant, located in Ghent (or Gent) in Belgium, where the C40 will take over the V40 discontinued last year. The XC40 and C40 will also be made in China.

The dimensions of the C40 are identical to those of the XC40, namely 4.43 m long, 1.86 m wide and 1.66 m high. The weight could be slightly less than that of the XC40 Recharge, around 2 tonnes.
