The Russian market fell by 5.3% in 2021 compared to 2019
The Russian light vehicle market (PC+LCV) increased by 4.3% in 2021 compared to 2020 and fell by 5.3% compared to 2019. Russia registered 1,666,780 light vehicles in 2021, compared to 1,598,825 units in 2020 and 1,760,000 in 2019. The level established in 2021 remains however very low compared to the years 2007-2008 and 2011-2012-2013-2014 which had marked a peak in registrations in Russia (more than 2.5 million units per year). The 2021 level remains in line with the trend of the years 2015 to 2020 (around 1.5 million units per year), the lowest level on the Russian market. These years 2015 to 2020 correspond to the period of the economic sanctions which were imposed on Russia in relation to the Crimea problem in 2014. The Russian automobile market nevertheless remains the fourth in Europe in terms of volume, behind Germany, France and Great Britain, but ahead of Italy.

The Renault-Nissan group remains largely the leader of the Russian market in 2021 (34% market share), mainly thanks to the Lada brand (21% market share) which remains the leading brand in this market. The Hyundai-Kia (23%), Volkswagen (12%), Toyota (7%), BMW (3%) and Daimler (3%) groups follow. The other manufacturers have very modest market shares. Chinese manufacturers represent 7% of the Russian market, up sharply compared to 2020.

The best-selling models in Russia in 2021 are the Lada Vesta (113,698 units), Lada Granta (111,430 units), Kia Rio (82,941 units), Hyundai Creta (68,081 units) and Hyundai Solaris (61,061 units).

The Turkish market increased by 53.9% in 2021 compared to 2019
The Turkish vehicle market (PC+UV) fell by 4.6% in 2021 compared to 2020 and increased by 53.9% compared to 2019 which had seen registrations collapse. Turkey registered 737,350 vehicles in 2021, compared to 772,788 in 2020 and 479,000 in 2019. The level of 2021 is an average level compared to the last twenty years, being between the peak of 2015-2016 (1 million registrations per year) and the trough of 2018-2019 (500,000 registrations per year).

Victim of repeated economic and political crises, Turkey presents an unstable and uneven evolution of the automobile market, which accentuates the difficulty of predicting the future evolution of this market. The forecasts of a Turkish market of 900,000 units announced last year by Inovev could not be achieved, since this market did not even reach 750,000 registrations in 2021.

By manufacturer, the Renault-Nissan group was overtaken last year by the Stellantis group created in 2021 by the merger of FCA (Fiat-Chrysler) and PSA. Fiat has always been a very important player in Turkey since the 1960s. The combined sales of Fiat and PSA have therefore made it possible to create the new leader of the Turkish market from 2021, with 27% of total registrations, thus ahead of Renault-Nissan. (21%) and Volkswagen (19%).

The best-selling models in Turkey in 2021 were the Fiat Tipo (71,741 units), Toyota Corolla (41,721 units), Renault Clio (36,444 units) and Renault Mégane (29,832 units). The Fiat Tipo is called Egea in Turkey.

Volkswagen Group sold 8.9 million vehicles in 2021
The Volkswagen group sold 8,882,000 vehicles worldwide in 2021, representing a drop of 4.5% compared to 2020 and 17.2% compared to 2019, due to the shortage of electronic chips according to the manufacturer. This is the lowest figure for ten years. Its sales nevertheless increased by 15.6% in North America last year, to 908,400 units (including 671,800 in the United States) and by 5.1% in South America, to 514,600 units, but they declined in Europe (-2.7%) and China (-14.1%). Sales fell to 3,518,700 units in Europe and 3,304,800 units in China.

Two of the group's brands were particularly affected. Volkswagen saw its passenger car sales fall by 8.1% worldwide (mainly in China) and its light commercial vehicle sales by 3.2%. They fell to 4,896,900 units and 359,500 units respectively. Skoda saw global sales fall 12.6% last year to 878,200 units, mainly due to a slump in China as the Jetta brand eventually replaced Skoda in that market. Audi saw its own stagnate (-0.7%) at 1,680,500 units. Conversely, Seat/Cupra (+10.3%) and Porsche (+10.9%) saw their sales increase, to 470,500 units and 301,900 units respectively.

The three luxury brands (Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini) totaled 23,100 units (including 14,600 Bentleys and 8,400 Lamborghinis), representing an increase of 23.6% compared to 2020. MAN truck brands (151 000 units) and Scania (90,400 units) grouped in the Traton division also grew strongly (+27.8% and +25.4% respectively).

The Swedish market is down 15.5% in 2021 compared to 2019
The Swedish automobile market (passenger cars) remained at a very low level in 2021 compared to 2019 (-15.5%), a level which remains very slightly above that of 2020 (+3.0%). In total, Sweden registered 300,983 passenger cars last year, compared to 292,024 in 2020 and 356,036 in 2019. This is the lowest figure recorded since 2014, after that of 2020.

The reasons given for this very low level of registrations in 2021 relate to the deficient supply of the semiconductors that car manufacturers need to make their cars marketable. But it could be that the sharp increase in the average price of cars is holding back purchases and encouraging potential customers to keep their vehicles longer.

The ranking by brand shows that the national Volvo brand remains the Swedish market leader, with 48,220 units, ahead of Volkswagen (37,902 units), Kia (29,867 units) and Toyota (23,921 units).

By groups, Volkswagen remains the Swedish market leader in 2021 (76,554 units), ahead of Geely-Volvo (48,220 units), Hyundai-Kia (38,689 units), Toyota (25,346 units) and Stellantis (23,489 units).

The top-selling models in 2021 were the Volvo S60/V60 (14,916 units), Volvo XC40 (12,242 units) and Volvo XC60 (11,942 units). These three models of the national brand are ahead of the Kia Ceed/Proceed/XCeed (11,399 units) and Kia Niro (10,311 units). The SUVs here occupy three places among the top five sales on the Swedish market in 2021.

The Renault group sold 2.7 million vehicles in 2021
The Renault group (Renault, Dacia, Alpine, Lada, Jinbei & Huasong) sold 2,696,401 vehicles in 2021, which represents a decrease of 4.5% compared to 2020 (which was down 21.3% compared to compared to 2019). This therefore shows a drop of 28.2% compared to 2019. Compared to 2019, the Renault group lost more than one million vehicles, while the global market for all manufacturers lost a total of nearly 10 million vehicles. over the period. The Renault group announced last year (like other manufacturers) that it would henceforth favor profitability over volumes, which could have had a negative influence on the Renault group's sales. This type of strategy can also have an influence on all automotive markets, which are seeing the average price of vehicles of all brands increase significantly.

At the same time, the Renault group had announced that the semiconductor crisis would cause it to lose 500,000 vehicles in 2021, which was undoubtedly also one of the reasons for the decline in sales of the manufacturer last year.

The breakdown by brand was as follows in 2021: 1,693,609 Renault (-5.2%), 537,095 Dacia (+3.1%), 385,208 Lada (+0.5%), 77 830 Jinbei & Huasong (-50.2%) and 2,659 Alpine (+74.2%).

The sales figures by model are not yet known, but the manufacturer announces that 30% of its vehicles sold in 2021 will be electrified, including the Twingo ZE, Kangoo ZE, Master ZE and Zoé, as well as the Clio hybrid (19% of sales ), Captur hybrid (24% of sales) and Arkana hybrid (56% of sales). The year 2022 will see the marketing of the 100% electric Mégane.
