Japan Mobility Show 2025: Nissan (1/2)
- Ahead of the JMS, Nissan has released a teaser image of the new Elgrand. It will be the fourth generation of this large minivan, which will be marketed exclusively in Japan. According to the carmaker, it will be equipped with a hybrid engine. Nissan produced around 98,700 units at its Shatai plant in Japan between 2014 and 2024, but production has been declining since 2018.
- The Nissan Leaf, a pioneering electric vehicle and the world's best-selling BEV until Tesla came along, is entering its third generation this year. Although it was unveiled in June 2025 and has been on sale in the US since this fall, Nissan is exhibiting the Leaf at the JMS to promote its European launch in early 2026. It has a length of 4.35 meters, a width of 1.81 meters, and a height of 1.55 meters, as well as an unladen weight of up to 1.9 tons. This makes it 14 cm shorter, but 2 cm wider and 1 cm higher, and above all 297 kg heavier than its predecessor. Two basic models are available. The basic version combines a 52 kWh battery with an electric motor that delivers 130 kW (177 hp). The ranges according to the WLTP cycle are stated as up to 436 and 604 km, respectively. Production will be in Sunderland (UK) and Tochigi (Japan). Together, these two plants produced around 474,500 of these models between 2014 and 2024. If we include the Smyrna plant (USA), production of the Nissan Leaf reached around 650,600 for this period. In Europe, only around 8,200 Leafs were sold between 2014 and 2024. Inovev forecasts a production of 50.000 per year.
- Nissan has announced a facelift for the Aryia, which was unveiled in 2020, for JMS 2025. This new version is expected to be available in 2026 and will come with a choice of two batteries, a 63 kWh and an 87 kWh. In Europe, the Aryia was not a success so far, with sales of less than 1,400 units from 2022 to September 2025. From 2021 to 2024, around 118,400 models were produced at the Tochigi plant in Japan. Nissan hopes to revive the model with the facelift.
- The joint venture between Nissan and Chinese carmaker Dongfeng unveiled the N7 in April 2025, the first of nine planned NEVs. This sedan is tailored to the Chinese market and is therefore only available there. There are two batteries to choose from, 58kWh or 73kWh, and it has a maximum cruising range of 635km according to the CLTC cycle. In the first few months after launch, the JV confirmed 17,000 orders. The presentation at the JMS is likely to serve only as a showcase for the international strategy.

As a mid-size, fully electric SUV, it will be exciting to see how Honda has implemented the series motto in terms of “Thin” and “Light.” According to Honda, the interior is said to be exceptionally spacious.
- At the 2023 JMS, Honda unveiled a near-production prototype of the Honda Prelude, now in its sixth generation. The fifth generation ran from 1997 to 2002. Japan Mobility Show 2025: Mazda
- Mazda has announced a concept and released a first teaser image, which doesn't really reveal much. We can assume that it has four doors and is probably a coupe. Could it therefore be an evolution of the 2017 Vision Coupe concept? The profile appears to be quite smooth, as there are no door handles or mirrors visible. The most interesting question is likely to be the engine, as Mazda rebuilt its Wankel engine production team in 2024. It is quite possible that this will function as a generator for a battery as a range extender. Since Mazda is championing a “sustainable future” for this year's JMS, a BEV would also be possible.
- Mazda will exhibit its third generation of the Mazda CX-5 at this year's Japan Mobility Show. Production already began in October at the japaneseUjina plant, and the vehicle is expected to be available in stores in December 2025 for approximately €35,000. Around 4.5 million vehicles of this model have been built since 2012. The SUV has a 2.5-liter mild hybrid engine but no diesel variant. Externally, the design of the new CX-5 has not changed too much. However, it will be considerably larger, growing by 11.5 cm in length to 4.69 meters, by 1.5 cm in width to 1.86 meters, and by 3 cm in height to 1.70 meters. The hood will also be raised by 5 cm. This pushes the model out of the C segment and into the D segment. In Europe, 38,914 units of this model were sold between 2014 and 2024. Inovev forecasts a production of 300.000 units per year production.
- Mazda will also present a strictly limited racing edition of its MX-5 roadster. The vehicle is expected to deliver up to 200 hp, cost more than €43,000, and be limited to 100 models.
