The share of Chinese carmakers in Russia reached 61% in 2024, compared to 51% in 2023.
- 说明
The share of Chinese carmakers in Russia reached 61% in 2024, compared to 51% in 2023.
- Following the withdrawal of European, Japanese and Korean carmakers after the outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the share of Chinese carmakers on the Russian market increased significantly between 2022 (18%) and 2023 (51%), even exceeding one in two passenger car sales. This share of Chinese carmakers continued to grow in 2024, to 61% of the Russian market. The volume of sales of Chinese vehicles (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) in Russia thus increased from 536,768 units in 2023 to 943,577 units in 2024 (+76% increase), in a market that increased from 1,049,917 units in 2023 to 1,550,249 units in 2024 (+48% increase).
- The Russian market is gradually returning to normal after nearly three years of war with Ukraine, returning to its annual levels from 2015 to 2021. But we are still a long way from the figures recorded during Russia's years of economic prosperity (2011-2014) when the market largely exceeded two million vehicles per year.
- Russian national carmakerAvtovaz, controlled by Renault until the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and now a state-owned company, saw its sales increase from 326,757 units in 2023 to 439,035 units in 2024 (+34% increase), its market share falling from 31% to 28%. Avtovaz is losing market share year after year, probably because Chinese brands offer more for a competitive price.
- While European, Japanese, and Korean carmakers have completely disappeared from the Russian market by 2024, Chinese carmakers are consolidating their presence there, with Great Wall as the undisputed leader (192,000 sales), followed by Chery (158,000 sales), Geely (152,000 sales), Changan (103,000 sales), Omoda (50,000 sales), and Exeed (41,000 sales). These six brands account for three-quarters of Chinese sales.
The 25 best-selling models in Europe in 2024
- 说明
The 25 best-selling models in Europe in 2024
- In a European market (30 countries = EU + United Kingdom + Switzerland + Norway) of passenger cars (PC) which increased by 1% in 2024 compared to 2023, the Dacia Sandero became the best-selling car (258,745 units against 233,072 in 2023), ahead of the Volkswagen Golf (213,193 units against 179,871 in 2023) and Renault Clio (212,378 units against 198,950 in 2023) and taking the leading position from the Tesla Model Y which fell from first to fourth place (207,629 units against 249,020 in 2023).
- The Dacia Sandero probably meets a demand for affordable cars from European customers, even though this model has very few rivals in its category and car prices have increased significantly in recent years.
- The Volkswagen Golf (leader in Europe from 2007 to 2021 and second in the ranking in 2024) managed to revive in 2024, with an increase of 18.5% compared to 2023, which seems to indicate that part of the Volkswagen ID3 customer base switched to the combustion engine Golf last year.
- Volkswagen places four models in the Top 25 (Golf, T-Roc, Tiguan, Polo) in 2024, as does Toyota (Yaris Cross, Yaris, Corolla, CHR). These two brands dominate the European market in 2024, with a market share of 10.6% and 7.2% respectively. Renault (5.4%) and Peugeot (5%) each place two models in the Top 25 (Clio, Captur and 208, 2008). These four brands therefore only have a total of 28.2% of the market. Fiat only places one model in 2024 (Panda) because the 500 has disappeared from the Top 25. The B and C segments have consolidated their presence in Europe in 2024 (73% of the market compared to 71% in 2023). SUVs have consolidated their presence in Europe in 2024 (53% of the market compared to 52% in 2023).
The Honda group sold 3.80 million vehicles (passenger cars + light utility vehicles) in 2024
- 说明
The Honda group sold 3.80 million vehicles (passenger cars + light utility vehicles) in 2024
- The Honda group (Honda, Acura) sold 3,800,037 vehicles (passenger cars + light utility vehicles) worldwide in 2024, compared to 4.19 million in 2023, representing a decrease of 9.3%. Despite this sharp decline, mainly due to a severe underperformance in China (-27.8% of sales in 2024, which is equivalent to a loss of 350,000 vehicles), Honda only lost one place in the overall carmaker ranking, being overtaken last year by the Chinese BYD (4.27 million sales) but still supplanting its compatriot Nissan (3.35 million sales) with whom it had recently considered merging.
- For Honda, abandoning this project does not have any harmful consequences; rather, it is the implementation of this merger that would have required a lot of work, in particular in helping Nissan to relaunch itself and in rationalizing the Honda-Nissan platforms and engines. On the one hand, this merger does not seem very relevant because the two carmakers are direct competitors, with similar ranges, and on the same markets. On the other hand, this merger would have been a good way to save Nissan in great difficulty.
- Honda is at a crossroads, having recently ceased producing in Europe and ended its production agreement with the American group GM for a future range of all-electric cars. Honda delivered only 65,693 BEVs in 2024, representing just 1.7% of its global sales.
- Honda's largest market in 2024 remains the United States, followed by China, Japan and Europe.
The Suzuki group sold 3.25 million vehicles (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) in 2024
- 说明
The Suzuki group sold 3.25 million vehicles (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) in 2024
- The Suzuki Group (Suzuki, Maruti) sold 3,248,317 vehicles (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) worldwide in 2024, compared to 3.07 million in 2023, representing a 5.8% year-on-year increase. Suzuki maintains its tenth place worldwide despite strong growth by Chinese carmakers Geely and Chery, which are now close behind.
- Despite the absence of battery electric cars in its range, Suzuki has continued to progress over the past four years, thus getting closer to Honda and Nissan, which were much more powerful than it ten years ago.
- Suzuki has benefited in recent years from the strong growth of the Indian market, in which it is largely dominant under the Maruti brand. This market has thus grown from 2.9 million units in 2020 to 3.8 million in 2021, 4.8 million in 2022, 5.1 million in 2023 and 5.2 million in 2024.
- In 2024, Suzuki took advantage of the difficulties of its competitor Daihatsu earlier in the year, as both brands specialize in Kei Cars. Many Daihatsu customers then turned to Suzuki. This was all the more easily achieved as Suzuki has been a partner of the Toyota group for several years now. Here are some key points of their partnership:
1. Toyota and Suzuki exchange technologies, particularly in the area of engines and platforms.
2. Suzuki sells some rebadged Toyota models, such as the Suzuki Across (Toyota RAV4) and the Suzuki Swace (Toyota Corolla).
3. Toyota and Suzuki are working together on future electric vehicles, including a battery electric SUV planned for 2025.
4. The new battery electric SUV will be produced under both brands at the Suzuki factory in Gujarat, India.
The Ford group sold 4.07 million vehicles (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) in 2024
- 说明
The Ford group sold 4.07 million vehicles (passenger cars and light utility vehicles) in 2024
- The Ford Group (Ford, Lincoln) sold 4,065,717 vehicles (passenger cars + light utility vehicles) worldwide in 2024, compared to 4,035,115 in 2023, which represents a small increase of 0.8%.
- Formerly the world's second-largest carmaker for much of the 20th century, Ford fell to sixth place in the early 2000s before dropping back to seventh place behind China's BYD in 2024.
- Like its compatriot GM, Ford has given up on its sedans market in the United States and has gradually exit a number of markets, such as Russia, India and especially South America, but has also seen its influence in Europe and China significantly reduced. Ford could eventually withdraw from the European and Chinese markets, according to Inovev.
- Like GM – and one might wonder whether these are factual trends or carefully considered strategies – the Ford group will achieve half of its sales in 2024 in its historic market, the United States.
- In this market, Ford sold 2,035,295 vehicles last year, while its rival GM sold 2,689,399 units. Of this volume, the F-Series pickup (the best-selling vehicle in the United States) found 735,806 customers, representing 36% of its sales in the USA.
- The Ford Group sold 149,566 BEVs worldwide in 2024 , representing 3.7% of its global sales, a figure very close to that recorded by GM, if we exclude the Chinese brands Wuling and Baojun. Its best-selling BEVs were the Ford Mustang Mach E (51,745 units), the Ford F-Series Lightning (33,510 units), the Ford Explorer (15,046 units) and the Ford Transit E (12,610 units).
