Car production in Russia fell by 65% in March 2022
Russian car production fell by 40% in March 2022 compared to February 2022, and by 65% compared to March 2021. This situation is explained by the production stoppage of most manufacturers in the country, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine which began on February 24 and continued through March and April.

The figures provided by Russian organizations show that the volume of automobile production in Russia has increased from 104,000 units (PC+LCV) in January 2022 to 127,000 in February 2022 and 59,000 in March 2022, i.e. 290,000 units in total ( including 244,000 PV) compared to 100,000 units produced in January 2021, 143,000 in February 2021 and 165,000 in March 2021, i.e. 408,000 units in total (including 362,000 PV). The drop in production reached 65% in March 2022 compared to March 2021, which is quite logical since only Autovaz and UAZ plants continued to operate almost normally that month, these two manufacturers "nationals" accounting for about a third of Russian car production in recent years. April will be more difficult, however, as economic sanctions begin to weigh on production and consumption in Russia.

If the Russian car market fell by 60% in March 2022 compared to March 2021 (from 172,000 to 71,000 units), it was not due to a collapse in demand, but due to the stoppage of production at factories belonging to foreign manufacturers. Customers could not refer to imported vehicles since imports were also suspended. For April, the difficulties are expected to intensify and a fall of almost 80% in the Russian car market is to be expected.

Auto sales in China fell 43% in April 2022
The Chinese automotive market had started 2022 well with sales up 7% in January and 29% in February compared to the corresponding months of 2021. But since March, China has been facing a new wave of Covid which is affecting production and internal consumption, resulting in stagnant car sales in March and a drop in sales in April, of around 43% compared to April 2021. The volume of passenger car registrations did not exceeded 965,000 units in April 2022, compared to 1,704,000 in April 2021, 1,536,000 in April 2020 and 1,575,000 in April 2019. Of the 965,000 passenger cars sold in China in April 2022, 461,000 are sedans and 447,000 are SUVs, with SUVs (-46%) falling more than sedans (-39%). We observe that China and Russia saw their car market plunge in April 2022, but for different reasons. By way of comparison, the three other major markets experienced a smaller decline last month: -20% for Europe, -18% for the United States, -15% for Japan.

However, over the first four months of 2022, China limits the fall in its passenger car market to -4%, while Europe is at -13%, the United States at -16% and Japan at -17%. Russia is at -45%.

The decline in the global automotive market is estimated according to Inovev at -12.5% over the cumulative four months of 2022. Forecasts for the whole year are very uncertain as they will depend on the duration and intensity of the war in Ukraine, the duration and intensity of Covid in China, the duration and intensity of semiconductor supply disruptions.

Tesla sold 310,048 electric cars in the first quarter of 2022
The American manufacturer Tesla sold 310,048 electric cars during the first quarter of 2022, which augurs for a total of 1.2 million units sold over the whole of this year. The three main markets were China (170,000 units, 3% of the Chinese market), the United States (83,000 units, 2.5% of the US market) and Europe (56,000 units, 2% of the market European).

Tesla production reached 305,407 units in the first quarter of 2022, a slightly lower figure than sales due to inventory registrations of models manufactured in 2021 or registrations registered before the delivery of models in production.

This production figure does not yet include the manufacture of electric cars at the Berlin (Germany) and Austin (USA) sites, which will come into operation during the second quarter of 2022.

Tesla's production in the first quarter of 2022 breaks down as follows: China made 178,887 cars (60% of the total) and the United States 126,520 units (40% of the total).

The Model 3 was the most produced over the period (146,161 units), slightly ahead of the Model Y (145,028 units).

The Model S and Model X are now clearly marginalized, with only 7,492 and 6,726 units produced respectively. According to the manufacturer, the start of activity at the Berlin and Austin factories will primarily concern the Model Y, a large number of orders of which cannot be fulfilled due to the currently insufficient production capacity.

The Top 25 best-selling models in Europe in the first quarter of 2022
In a European car market (29 countries) for passenger cars which fell by 10.7% in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the first quarter of 2021, to 2,750,365 units, the ranking of the top 25 sales was somewhat upset.

Firstly, the Volkswagen Golf (44,659 units; -18.3%) is no longer the European market leader, as it has been since 2007, since it is the Peugeot 208 (50,609 units; -15.0%) which took first place in sales in Europe in the first quarter of 2022, like its ancestor the Peugeot 206 in 2002 and 2003. Third place is occupied by the Dacia Sandero (43,196 units; +3.3%) which is one of the rare models in the Top 25 to progress in 2022 compared to 2021. It is also the first time that a Dacia has been among the top three sales in Europe. The Peugeot 2008 (38,287 units; -25.4%) in sharp decline, finds itself in fourth position, ahead of the Citroën C3 (37,477 units; -19.3%), Opel Corsa (37,165 units; -29, 6%), Ford Puma (36,497 units; -2.9%), Renault Clio (35,835 units; -25.9%), Toyota Yaris (34,303 units; -30.5%) and Volkswagen Tiguan (34 140 units; -31.6%). These ten cars together account for 15% of sales in Europe. We note the good performance of French brand cars in this ranking while German brand cars are struggling. On the other hand, we observe a stronger decline in SUV sales than that of sedans, no doubt for a question of price. Finally, we note that certain models have been ousted from the top 25 in 2022, such as the Skoda Octavia, Ford Fiesta, Volvo XC40, Mercedes A-Class and BMW 3 Series. On the other hand, the Opel Mokka and Toyota Yaris Cross are making a remarkable entrance. The Tesla Model 3 (32,582 sales; +7.5%) is 16th.

Inovev forecasts 50,000 units per year of the new BMW 7 Series
The BMW 7 Series is a large family of high-end sedans born in 1968 (at the time, this series was called BMW 2500/2800) and which has been renewed seven times, the last having been in the spring of 2022 This model, which remains an eternal rival of the Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8, but also of the Lexus LS, had to be excessive, which is the case, since the new generation E65 is 13 centimeters longer, or 5 .25 m for the normal version and 5.39 m for the long version, not far from the dimensions of a Rolls-Royce Ghost which shares the same CLAR platform. Compared to the old 7 Series, the width increases by 5 centimeters (1.95 m) and the height also by 5 centimeters (1.54 m).

In addition, the powers have been revised upwards. The 3-litre six-cylinder and 4.5-litre eight-cylinder petrol engines become rechargeable hybrids (PHEV) and deliver 490 hp for the first and 570 hp for the second (compared to 395 hp and 530 hp for the previous models). However, a diesel engine remains in the catalog, it is a 3-litre six-cylinder developing 300 hp, a kind of entry-level for a model sold from 140,000 euros.

The most notable novelty is the arrival of a 100% electric version called i7 with a power of 544 hp allowing a range of 600 km according to the WLTP cycle. The battery capacity is 100 kWh.

The new BMW 7 Series will be produced like the previous ones at the German Dingolfing site, at the rate of 50,000 units per year, which traditionally places it in volume between the Mercedes S-Class and the Audi A8.
