HEV and Thermal market share in Europe and China in the first quarter of 2022
The market share of non-plug-in hybrid (HEV-Full) passenger cars in Europe continues to grow, rising from 4% in 2020 to 6% in 2021 and 8% in the first quarter of 2022. The year should end on a penetration of 8 to 9% thanks mainly to the generalization of the hybrid on the whole Toyota range.

The market share of non-plug-in passenger cars (HEV-Full) in China also continues to grow, but at a slower pace than in Europe, since it fell from 1.2% in 2020 to 2.4% in 2021 and 3% in the first quarter of 2022. HEV-Full even posted a share of 3.4% in March (compared to 2.5% in January and 3.2% in February). The year should end with a penetration of nearly 3.5%.

The market share of Gasoline/Diesel/HEV-Mild (Thermal) passenger cars in Europe has been falling sharply for several years, falling from 85% in 2020 to 74% in 2021 and 71% in the first quarter of 2022. he year should therefore end with a penetration of around 70%.

The market share of Gasoline/Diesel/HEV-Mild (Thermal) passenger cars in China is falling as sharply as that in Europe, since it fell from 93% in 2020 to 82% in 2021 and 76% in the first quarter of 2022. The year should therefore end with a penetration of approximately 75%, which also shows that the share of internal combustion cars remains even greater in China than in Europe (because the share of PHEV and HEV-Full is much lower in China than in Europe).

The Ford Fiesta is no longer the best-selling car in Great Britain
Between 2010 and 2020, the Ford Fiesta remained Britain's best-selling car. Its sales volume remained above 90,000 units per year between 2010 and 2017, well ahead of subsequent models, such as the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Corsa and Vauxhall Astra. Since the early 2000s and the end of Rover Group, the top four selling cars in Britain have traditionally been the two B-segment cars and the two C-segment cars from Ford and Vauxhall. These two brands, then British subsidiaries of the two American manufacturers, had managed to grab the top positions in the UK market after the rout of popular British brands such as Austin, Morris, Hillman, Triumph and Rover. But their decline began in the years 2015-2016, which amplified with the takeover of Opel-Vauxhall by PSA in 2017 and Ford's growing disinterest in passenger cars in Europe.

And for the first time, the Ford Fiesta is no longer the best-selling car in Britain in 2021. It even fell to eighth place, outpaced by the Vauxhall Corsa which took over the position of the British market leader for the first time, but also by the Mini (2nd), the Mercedes A-Class (3rd), the Volkswagen Polo ( 4th), the Volkswagen Golf (5th), Nissan Qashqai (6th) and Ford Puma (7th) which probably took part of the clientele.

The fall of the former stars of the British top 5 is also general, the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf now being shunned by customers. Even the performance of the Vauxhall Corsa turns out to be average.

GM is bringing the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 back into production in the US
We saw in a previous Auto-Analyse (2022-07) that the General Motors group, driven by customer demand, had put the mid-range Chevrolet Malibu sedan back into production, which opposes the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima which tended to corner the US sedan market after GM and Ford withdrew from that specific market.

The Chevrolet Malibu has regained its monthly sales rate of the recent past, that is to say a rate of 10,000 to 13,000 units per month (i.e. 120,000 to 150,000 per year), demonstrating that the discontinuation of the Malibu in 2021 had been a mistake. Another Chevrolet sedan is produced in the United States, it is the 100% electric Bolt, but in much smaller quantities (2,000 to 4,000 per month).

Finally, we must mention the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 which represent the Premium category of American sedans, but whose sales remain very low (less than 2,000 per month for the CT4 and less than 3,000 per month for the CT5) and which also had to be put back into production from the fall of 2021, following the request of a certain clientele.

The Cadillac CT4 and CT5 survive while the CT6 has disappeared, along with competing Lincoln sedans from the Ford group, and while the days of the Chrysler 300 from the Stellantis group are numbered.

Among the rare American sedans still in production among the Big Three, the Dodge Charger is still the most produced in 2021 (90,000 units) but for how long? Fortunately, the American auto industry still has a sedan produced at more than 500,000 units a year: the Tesla Model 3.

Inovev plans 70,000 units a year of the new Nissan Pathfinder SUV
Nissan has just unveiled the new generation of its large Pathfinder SUV which opposes the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Dodge Durango, Toyota Highlander, Subaru Ascent, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX9 and Volkswagen Atlas. In the range of SUVs from the Japanese manufacturer allied to Renault, the Pathfinder (segment E) is above the Juke (segment B), Qashqai (segment C) and X-Trail/Rogue (segment D).

After a period of lethargy, Nissan is in the process of completely renewing its range, since the SUVs were replaced in two years and the range of sedans will also benefit from a rejuvenation. The Pathfinder SUV is an imposing machine (5.02 m long x 1.98 m wide x 1.77 m high) that can carry seven to eight people and is sold mainly in North America.

This model has a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine developing 284 hp, like the previous generation. The manufacturer did not want to install either a diesel engine, which is shunned by American customers, or a plug-in hybrid engine on this model, whereas the previous generation had the right to a plug-in hybrid in 2014 and 2015. This decision was no doubt taken to limit the weight and price of the vehicle, so that the Pathfinder remains competitive against its rivals.

Like other Nissan SUVs whose renewal had been delayed, the Pathfinder had experienced a drop in sales between 2016 and 2021, from 110,000 units in 2016 to 77,000 in 2019 and 32,000 in 2021. For the new generation (still produced at the Smyrna site in Tennessee (USA), Inovev expects 70,000 units per year.

What are now the best-selling sedans in the United States?
The removal of Big Three sedans (GM, Ford, Chrysler) from the C, D and E segments in 2020 and 2021 did not result in a real increase in sales of equivalent cars from Japanese and Korean manufacturers. These continued to see their sales decline in 2020 even if we are witnessing a modest revival of these models in 2021, without being certain that this trend is directly linked to the cessation of sales of Big Three sedans.

The best-selling Japanese sedans in the United States in 2021 are the Toyota Camry (sales leader for more than a decade) with 314,000 units, the Honda Civic (264,000 units), the Toyota Corolla (230,000 units) and the Honda Accord (203,000 units). These four C- and D-segment sedans are followed by the Nissan Sentra (128,000 units) and the Hyundai Elantra (124,000 units), both of which are C-segment. The Tesla Model 3, a 100% electric D-segment American car, manages to clinch seventh place (122,000 units), also slightly up on 2020, but lower than 2018 and 2019, no doubt due to competition from the Tesla Model Y launched in 2020 Behind the Tesla Model 3, the Kia Forte (116,000 units), Nissan Altima (104,000 units) and Hyundai Sonata (93,000 units) bring up the rear of the top ten.

In total, these 10 sedans represented 1.7 million vehicles sold in the USA in 2021, compared to 1.6 million in 2020, 2.1 million in 2019, 2.5 million in 2016 and 2.3 million in 2012. The overall sedan market in the USA represented 3 million units in 2021, compared to 3.3 million in 2020, 4.3 million in 2019, 6.0 million in 2016 and 5.9 million in 2012.
