The 25 best-selling SUVs in Europe in 2021 and 2022
Two Volkswagen models (T-Roc and Tiguan) take the top two spots in the European SUV market in 2022.

The former Peugeot 2008 leader is relegated to third place, just ahead of the Tesla Model Y, which quadruples its sales in 2022 compared to 2021.

Of the 25 best-selling SUVs in Europe in 2022, there are 13 European brand models, 4 Korean brand models, 5 Japanese brand models
and 3 American brand models.
Inovev forecasts 250,000 units of the new Mini Cooper per year in the world
The Mini brand (a subsidiary of the BMW group) now includes two different models:
• The "Mini" model by itself (Mini One or Mini Hatch depending on the market) available as a 3/5 doors sedan and 5-doors station wagon (this station wagon version is called Clubman);
• The 5-doors SUV model referred to as "Countryman".

The Mini brand has just unveiled the fifth generation of the Mini in a 3-doors sedan version. The body of the new model (code F66) remains practically the same but certain details make it possible to identify the new generation, such as the triangular taillights, a different tailgate shape or a redesigned grille. The launch of the fifth generation of Mini coincides with a new naming because the model is now called Cooper in all markets. The Mini brand therefore now includes 2 models: the Cooper model and the Countryman model. It seems that the 5-door sedan and 5-door Clubman will not be replaced. Two battery electric (BEV) versions of the Cooper will appear on the market, one with a 135 kW electric motor and the other with a 160 kW electric motor, both versions being equipped with a 54 kWh capacity battery.

Importantly, the Mini Cooper BEV (only available in a three-doors version) will be produced exclusively in China with Great Wall (50-50 between BMW and Great Wall), while the combustion engine versions will be produced in England, in Oxford, as previously. Inovev forecasts 250,000 Mini Coopers per year, including 50,000 BEVs in 2025 then 100,000 in 2030 (compared to 43,000 in 2022).

These figures do not include the 5-door Mini Countryman which should be renewed in November 2023 and will be available for the first time in BEV version. This new Countryman will be produced in Germany, in Leipzig.

These figures also do not include the 5-door Mini Aceman which should be launched next year. This intermediate model (4.05 m long) between Mini Cooper (3.85 m long) and Mini Countryman (4.40 m long) will be a battery electric models made in China with Great Wall.
The Tesla Model Y becomes the best-selling model in Europe in Q1-2023
The Tesla Model Y SUV became the best-selling model in Europe in the first quarter of 2023. It is the first time that a battery electric model has been the European market leader. This is the first time that an American model has been the European market leader. It is also the first time that an SUV has been the European market leader. Finally, it is the first time that a Tesla has been the European market leader for a quarter.

Between the first quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023, sales of the Tesla Model Y in Europe were multiplied by 2.8 and the production of the model on a European site is one of the factor explaining this strong sales increase. Before the production in Berlin, Tesla deliveries were chaotic, mainly quarterly. The increase in sales of Tesla Model Y (+45,000 sales) more than offset the drop in Tesla Model 3 (-15,000 sales) on the European market.

The Dacia Sandero is in second position on the European market and it is the antithesis of the Tesla Model Y. It is a model with a combustion engine (the Tesla is battery electric vehicle) at a low price (the Tesla is expensive). This is the first time that a Dacia model has risen to second place on the European market over a quarter.

The former leader Volkswagen Golf, supplanted by the Volkswagen T-Roc (4th) and Tiguan (8th), is now ranked at the 9th place, well behind the Peugeot 208 (3rd) and Opel Corsa (5th). The Renault Clio is 6th followed by the Fiat 500 (7th). On the Top 25, there are 14 SUVs and 11 sedans. Over the first 3 months of 2023, BEV sales represent 13.5% of the European market.
Inovev forecasts 130,000 units per year in Europe of the VW ID7
Volkswagen has just unveiled its new battery electric sedan ID7 (D-segment) in April 2023. This model should replace the Passat sedan which has just been removed from VW product range. An ID7 break is planned for next year, which should replace the Passat break still available (at a price of 43,000 to 55,000 euros).

The ID7 completes Volkswagen's electric range, which until now is built around the ID3, ID4, ID5, ID6 and ID Buzz. All these models are based on the MEB platform of the Volkswagen group (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Cupra, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini) which is also used by Ford Europe for its range of electric cars under development.

The ID7 receives a 210 kW electric motor and an 85 kWh battery pack which would allow it a range of 700 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. A more affordable version with a 77 kWh battery would allow a range of 600 kilometers.

The ID7 is a rival of the Tesla Model 3 but will achieve production volumes probably much lower than those of the Californian electric car. In 2022, 547,000 units of the Tesla Model 3 were produced (compared to 531,000 in 2021 and 404,000 in 2020), while Inovev expects 50,000 ID7s produced at the German site in Emden in 2025 and 130,000 in 2030.

But it is likely that Volkswagen will decide to produce the ID7 in China and the United States in the short term, which could double its production volume. Everything will depend on the price of the ID7 which according to Inovev could be in a range between 60,000 and 70,000 euros if we refer to the prices charged by the carmaker for the ID4, ID5 and ID6. The Passat was priced 40,000 to 50,000 euros.
Evolution of SUV and MPV sales in China between 2000 and 2022
SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) sales in China have grown significantly since the early 2000s, driven by strong carmaker marketing. While their market share was close to 0% in the year 2000, it rose to 10% in 2010, then 30% in 2015, 40% in 2017 and 47% since 2020. The share of SUVs seems to be levelling off just below 50% despite a considerable offer of this type of model on the Chinese market.

In volume, SUV sales have grown from virtually zero in the year 2000 to 2 million in 2012, 4 million in 2014, 10 million in 2017 and finally 11 million in 2022. The slight drop in SUV sales in 2018, 2019 and 2020 is due to an overall decline of the Chinese market during those three years. With the expected increase of the Chinese market and a market share that is probably stabilizing, the sales volume of SUVs is bound to increase further for a few years.

On the other hand, sales of MPVs (Multi Purpose Vehicles) in China have fallen significantly since 2017 but they have increased until 2016, contrary to what happened in Europe and the United States. Specifically to China, the SUVs and MPVs sales growth took place in parallel until 2016. Then MPV customers turned to sedans and SUVs.

MPVs market share, which peaked at 10% in 2016, gradually fell to 8% in 2017, 7% in 2018, 6% in 2019, 5% in 2020 and 2021, then 4% in 2022. The sales decline of MPV seems inevitable. In this context, sedans represent 49% of the Chinese market in 2022, compared to 61% in 2015, 81% in 2012, 90% in 2009 and 92% in 2005.
