The share of BEVs by carmaker in Europe in 2022
Most carmakers established in Europe have announced that they intend to offer their entire range of passenger car models equipped with fully electric engines from 2030. Some brands have even announced that this range will be available from 2028 or even from 2025... However, Inovev's analyses show that sales of battery electric vehicles will very hardly be able to represent 100% of sales in Europe in 2030 or even in 2035.

Admittedly, the European Commission's regulation for zero-emission cars are much tougher than those proposed by the Chinese, American or Japanese governments. But already, Germany seems to be deviating from the initial objectives by counting on e-fuels to continue for some time the production of cars with internal combustion engines.

Inovev wanted to know where the carmakers are today, in terms of sales of electric cars, in relation to their objectives and in relation to the regulation of the European Commission.

We note that in 2022 Tesla and the Chinese NIO, Xpengare already 100% battery electric vehicles. BYD is 50% BEV and 50% PHEV in China, but 100% in Europe. The Chinese GAC, SAIC, Chery, Dongfeng, Geely and Changan already achieve between 12% and 50% of their sales in electric vehicles. European carmakers make only 10% to 16% of their sales in electric vehicles. American and Japanese automakers achieve even lower scores, if we separate the figures of Wulingfrom the GM group. There are seven years left to reach the 2030 deadline and twelve years to reach the 2035 deadline. It will therefore be very difficult for carmakers to meet their objectives.
The evolution of the average dimensions of vehicles produced in Europe
Like weight, which has increased overall in twenty years, the dimensions of cars produced in Europe have increased significantly between 2000 and 2022, the average length of these cars having increased from 4.16 m in 2000 to 4.36 m in 2022, which represents an increase of 20 centimeters in twenty-two years, or 1 centimeter per year.

Growth was uninterrupted except for the year 2009 which had seen a revival in sales of small cars due to a system of scrapping bonuses which was intended to revive the automobile market which had then fallen to its lowest point. The trend of increasing dimensions resumed as early as 2010 and has not slowed down until today.

The average width of cars produced in Europe has also increased between 2000 and 2022, going from 1.71 m in 2000 to 1.81 m in 2022, which represents an increase of 10 centimeters in twenty-two years, i.e. 0.5 centimeters per year.

The average height of cars produced in Europe has also increased between 2000 and 2022, rising from 1.48 m in 2000 to 1.55 m in 2022, which represents an increase of 7 centimeters in twenty-two years, or 0.3 centimeter per year.

The increase in the average height of cars produced in Europe is not so much due to sedans, which remains stable, but to SUVs, the proportion of which is much higher today than twenty years ago and has steadily improved since that time. However, the increase in the average height of cars in Europe has marked a slowdown over the past four years.
The Top 20 best-selling BEVs and PHEVs in Europe in 2022
Europe registered 1,575,079 battery electric vehicles (BEV) in 2022 compared to 1,218,360 units in 2021 (+29%), and 1,013,827 plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) in 2022 compared to 1 045,022 units in 2021 (-3%).

Which were the 20 best-selling BEVs in Europe in 2022?
For the first time, two Teslas occupy the first two places in 2022 (there was only one in 2021): the Model Y (135,461 units; +340%) and the Model 3 (89,044 units; - 34%). The Fiat 500e is in third place (66,092 units; +59%) ahead of the Volkswagen ID4 (63,684 units; +18%) and ID3 (52,229 units; -23%). The Skoda Enyaq takes a surprising sixth place (50,765 units; +18%), ahead of the Peugeot e-208, Hyundai Kona e, Dacia Spring and Renault Zoé. The Renault Mégane BEV currently occupies seventeenth place and the Nissan Leaf is no longer even part of the Top 20.

Which were the 20 best-selling PHEVs in Europe in 2022?
The Ford Kuga was the best-selling PHEV in Europe in 2022 (53,865 units; +26%), ahead of the BMW 3 Series (33,569 units; -7%), Volvo XC40 (31,562 units; -28%) , Hyundai Tucson (29,022 units; +6%), Volvo XC60 (28,788 units; -10%), Peugeot 3008 (26,670 units; -27%), Lynk & Co 01 (26,191 units; +275%) , Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (25,690 units; +295%), CupraFormentor (24,964 units; +51%) and Mercedes GLC (23,728 units; -33%). It should be noted that among the 20 best-selling PHEVs in Europe in 2022, there are 16 SUVs and only 4 sedans (for BEVs, it is 12 sedans and 8 SUVs).
The B-segment is the one that has increased the most in weight in Europe
If we take into account an index of 100 in the year 2000 as a reference, what is the increase in the average weight and dimensions of cars produced in Europe between 2000 and 2022?

The weight of cars produced in Europe is the parameter that has increased the most with an index that has increased from 100 to 120 in 2022, an increase of 20%. The dimensions (length, width, height) increased at the same time by only 5%, the curve of the lengths, widths and heights being parallel and quite close.

To reach an index of 120 as for the weights, the average length of the cars would have had to increase to 4.99 m in 2022, which is far from being the case and fortunately we would say.

The weight index increased more than the size index due to the growing influence of SUVs (40% of production in Europe) and battery electric, full hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles (25% of production in Europe).

By segment, the weight index reveals a few lessons. It is B-segment that has increased the most (index 126 in 2022), while C, D, E segments reach an index of 118-119, but the value of their index has stabilized for ten years (around 118-119). A-Segment, on the contrary, has increased significantly over the past ten years (it has gone from 107 to 118 in 10 years). As for the F-segment, its index, which had reached 110 in 2005, remained stable until 2015 before falling to 107 in 2022.
The share of SUVs by carmaker and by region in 2022
In the global market, SUVs have taken an increasing share in the global market since the early 2000s.
§ In China, this type of vehicle represents 47% of the market PC+LUVin 2022 (compared to 41% in 2017).
§ In the United States, SUVs represent 55% of the market PC+LUVin 2022 (compared to 42% in 2017).
§ In Europe, they represent 46% of the market in 2022 PC+LUV(compared to 30% in 2017).

In terms of volumes, China represents 11.16 million SUVs sold in 2022, the United States 7.63 million units and Europe 5.21 million units. Japan represents only 820 000 units and the rest of the world represents a volume comparable to the United States one, which totals more than 32 million SUVs sold worldwide in 2022 (compared to 27.5 million units in 2017). Given the offer developed by carmakers, it is likely that the volume of SUVs will continue to increase in the short term worldwide. The volume of SUV registrations should therefore increase to 35 million units per year worldwide within one or two years. One question relates to SUVs in Europe. Will their growth not be stopped from 2025?

Which car brands are producing the most SUVs in 2022?
§ By brand, Toyota comes in first place, with 3.2 million units last year, well ahead of its competitors Volkswagen (1.9 million units), Hyundai (1.8 million units), Honda ( 1.5 million units), Kia (1.4 million units) and Ford (1.3 million units).
§ By group, Toyota is also the world leader (3.6 million units) ahead of Volkswagen (3.4 million units) and Hyundai-Kia (3.3 million units).
