French brands will represent only 41% of the French market in 2022
French brands have been declining in the French market for over 40 years. But the decline of national brands in their domestic market is a phenomenon that can be observed in all European countries and in North America. The only countries where this phenomenon is not observed are Japan, South Korea and especially China, where national Chinese brands have been growing in terms of market share for several years, and will account for 50% of the Chinese passenger car market in 2022, compared with 45% in 2021 and 40% in 2020.

As for the French market, several factors have worked against French brands. The first factor dates back to the creation of the Common Market at the end of the 1950s, which opened up the borders and allowed the first massive imports of foreign cars. The second factor was the disappearance of two major French brands (Panhard in 1967 and Simca-Talbot in 1987) and the arrival of Japanese and then Korean brands on the European marketFinally, the arrival of the Dacia brand (a subsidiary of Renault) in the 2000s took a large share of Renault's customers. For example, in 2022, Dacia sales will represent 55% of Renault's sales in France in terms of passenger cars.

It is interesting to note that the share of French brands went from 96% in 1960 to 78% in 197077% in 198061% in 199059% in 200054% in 201049% in 2020 and 41% in 2022. If we include Dacia, the share of French brands has declined from 59% in 2010 to 55% in 2020 and 50% in 2022. It should be added that French brands have made strong progress in other European markets, offsetting their decline in their home market.
Tesla sold 1.31 million electric vehicles worldwide in 2022
U.S. automaker Tesla sold 1.31 million electric vehicles (BEVs) worldwide in 2022up from 936,172 units in 2021, representing a 40% year-over-year increase, which follows an 87% increase in 2021 over 2020However, this dramatic increase is less than the automaker had hoped for at the beginning of last year, as Tesla was counting on a 50% increase in sales in 2022. The manufacturer explains that the new wave of Covid in China caused the closure of its Chinese factory in Shanghai for several weeks, a factory that could not catch up when it reopened due to its limited production capacity.

Tesla was nevertheless able to benefit from the start-up of its European factory in Berlin from April 2022, which allowed it to produce nearly 60,000 cars in 2022 (for an annual production capacity set at 150,000 units per year), in addition to its factories in Fremont (USA = 600,000 cars) and Shanghai (China = 700,000 cars). The Austin (USA) plant has just started manufacturing its 100% electric Semi truck in December 2022, scheduled for 50,000 units per year.

In 2022, Tesla's sales were equally concentrated on the Model 3 and Y, which accounted for 95% of the brand's total production volume.  The Model S and X (the most expensive in the lineup) accounted for only 5% of production volume. The Semi truck will be added to the lineup in 2023, along with the Austin-made Cybertruck pickup alongside the Semi.

Tesla's goal is to sell 2 million electric vehicles by 2023.
The Spanish market declines by 5.4% in 2022 compared to 2021
The Spanish car market (passenger cars) remained at a very low level in 2022 compared to 2021 (-5.4%) and especially compared to 2019 (-35%). In total, Spain registered 813,396 passenger cars last year, compared to 859,477 in 2021, 851,211 in 2020 and 1,258,260 in 2019. This is the lowest figure recorded since 2014. This is a far cry from the numbers reached in 2006/2007. The reasons given for this very low level of registrations in 2022 would be the delays in vehicle deliveries, which can reach several months. But it could be that the sharp increase in the average price of cars and the wait-and-see attitude of customers towards electric vehicles is slowing down purchases and encouraging potential customers to keep their vehicles longer.

The ranking by brand shows that Toyota is leading the Spanish market for the first time (73,505 units), ahead of Kia (63,345 units), Volkswagen (58,874 units), Hyundai (59,503 units) and Peugeot (54,737 units). Seat (49,200 units) is no longer in the top 5.

However, by group, Volkswagen remains the Spanish market leader in 2022(182,723 units), ahead of Stellantis (165,948 units), Hyundai-Kia (122,848 units) and Renault-Nissan (104,433 units).

The best-selling models in Spain in 2022 were the Hyundai Tucson (21,985 units), Dacia Sandero (20,782 units), Seat Arona (17,462 units), Toyota Corolla (16,998 units), Volkswagen T-Roc (16,595 units), Fiat 500 (15,999 units) and Toyota CHR (15,987 units).
The Italian market declines by 9.7% in 2022 compared to 2021
The Italian car market (passenger cars) remained at a very low level in 2022 compared to 2021 (-9.7%), and especially compared to 2019 (-31%). In total, Italy registered 1,316,702 passenger cars last year, compared to 1,457,952 in 2021, against 1,381,496 in 2020 and 1,916,320 in 2019. This is a far cry from the 2.5 million units recorded in 2007.

The reasons given for this very low level of registrations in 2022 are delays in vehicle deliveries, which can last several months.

But it could be that the sharp increase in the average price of cars and a wait-and-see attitude of customers towards electric vehicles is slowing down purchases and encouraging potential customers to keep their vehicles longer.

The ranking by brand shows that Fiat is still the market leader with 178,935 units, ahead of Volkswagen (104,852 units), Toyota (92,148 units), Ford (74,128 units), Peugeot (69,311 units) and Dacia (59,732 units), ahead of Renault.

By groups, Stellantis is the Italian market leader in 2022 (460,872 units) ahead of Volkswagen (218,005 units), Renault-Nissan (154,863 units), Toyota (95,394 units) and Hyundai-Kia (84,391 units).

The best-selling models in Italy in 2022 were the Fiat Panda (103,835 units), the Lancia Ypsilon (40,949 units) and the Fiat 500 (35,995 units). Note that Italy is the only country in Europe where the Lancia Ypsilon is marketed, but from 2024, the new Ypsilon will be distributed throughout Europe as in the 90s.
Belgian market declines by 4.4% in 2022 compared to 2021
The Belgian car market (passenger cars) remained at a very low level in 2022 compared to 2021 (-4.4%) and especially compared to 2019 (-33%). In total, Belgium registered 366,303 passenger cars last year, compared to 383,123 in 2021, against 431,491 in 2020 and 550,003 in 2019. This is the lowest figure recorded for several decades.
