Towards the introduction of electric vehicle quotas on the European market?
- In this context of Chinese domination of the global electric car market, which could further increase with the introduction from 2019 of production quotas imposed by the Chinese government to car manufacturers located in China, an independent study (France Strategie) was recently published with the aim of accelerating the development of the electric car in France and in the European Union.
- This study reviews all the schemes put in place in China, California and Norway (three states that strongly encourage the purchase of electric cars and which show promising results), which the European Union could learn from to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles.
- The study suggests that certain measures be evaluated and applied in the European Union, such as quotas imposed on manufacturers, the maintenance of financial aid for the purchase of electric vehicles, free tolls, the possibility of using reserved bus lanes, or wide spread increase in the installation of charging stations.
- To prevent a China take over of the electric vehicle industry, the study calls for industrial policy measures at the European level: a significant effort in research and development in the field of batteries, new materials, new vehicle concepts and recycling will have to be carried out on a European scale.

Chery has sold its Brazilian assembly plant
- Chery is having difficulty in expanding outside of China. The move to Italy, via DR Motor, ended in a bitter failure (419 sales in Italy in 2017, which is 10 times less than targets). The establishment of Qoros in Europe was very short-lived, since the brand returned to China after a few months. In Russia, the production volume of Chery has decreased from 40,000 units in 2007 to 4,000 in 2017. In Ukraine, it has decreased from 23,000 units in 2007 to 0 in 2017, a consequence of instability in this country since 2013.
- In Brazil, Chery built a factory in Jacarei in 2013, but could never exceed 2,500 units produced annually, due to a lack of local demand, whereas the capacity of this plant is 50,000 vehicles per year. It is true that the economic situation in Brazil as a whole had been very poor between 2013 and 2016, but while this situation has started to improve in 2017, Chery ‘s sales did not register a significant increase.
- The Chinese manufacturer, itself in difficulty in China, has had to give up its Brazilian plant at the end of last year. However, Chery continues to manufacture three models in 2018, renting the premises to the new owner. It is unlikely that this arrangement will continue in future years. However, there is a small revival of the brand in 2018, with a production volume reaching 7,500 units for the full year.

Assessment of the global market for electrified vehicles in 2017
- Last year, 1.2 million 100% electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were sold worldwide, as well as 1.4 million non-rechargeable hybrid vehicles (HEVs), for a total of 2.6 million vehicles with alternative engines, ie 2.8% of the world market (VP + LCV). Of this total, China bought 725,000 units (including 470,000 100% electric cars), Europe 640,000 (including 137,000 100% electric cars), Japan 600,000 (including 20,000 100% electric cars) and the United States 560,000 (including 107,000 100% electric cars).
- China, which has made electrification of vehicles a strategic priority to fight against air pollution, bought 4 times more electric cars than the US and 3 times more than Europe. And in 2019, quotas imposed by the Chinese government could increase the Chinese volume by a factor of 4 (nearly 2 million 100% electric cars according to Inovev).
- At the end of 2017, the BEV and PHEV global fleet reached 3 million units worldwide, of which two-thirds were 100% electric (BEV). China alone accounted for nearly 40% of this total. This proportion should increase in 2018 and especially in 2019.
- In terms of market share, however, Norway is the most advanced country in the world in electrification in 2017, with 39% of cars sold electrified, ahead of Iceland (12%) and Sweden (6.5%) . In China, their market share is only 2.2% but in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen, this share already exceeds 10%.

1,000 Alpine A110 produced in Dieppe
- The new Alpine A110 (which takes the name of the mythical model of the 60s) has passed the mark of 1,000 units produced in May 2018, which means that current production is at 200 per month and it should soon to increase to 250 per month, which is in line with the objectives initially set by the manufacturer. Renault has indicated that it plans to produce 3,000 units of the Alpine A110 in 2018, on the site of Dieppe (France).
- The model is expected to increase in production in 2019 (4,000 units and in 2020 (5,000 units ). If these numbers are confirmed, we could expect a diversification of the Alpine range, in the same way as at Porsche, with the launch of a sedan and a SUV, built on the same platform and with the same engines as the A110 coupe (currently, only a 1.8 turbo gasoline engine is available).
- Similarly, Porsche moved from the 911 coupe, whose origins also date back to the 1960s, to launch the Panamera sedan and the Cayenne and Macan SUVs much later.
- The Alpine brand could become the Premium brand of the Renault group, such as DS for PSA or Infiniti for Nissan. Alpine could thus perpetrate the tradition of the former French luxury brands that disappeared in the 50s, such as Delage, Delahaye, Hotchkiss, Salmson and Talbot.

Marchionne unveiled his 2018/2022 Plan for FCA (2)
The 2018/2022: product plan I has been completely overhauled relative to 2016. Evolution for the group brands is as follows:
- Lancia:cancellation of the brand as soon as the Ypsilon (2019) expires.
- Fiat: announced replacement of the Panda and 500, but the Punto will be stopped in 2018. The 500L and 500X will not be replaced. The Tipo will be stopped in 2021 in Europe and will not be replaced.
- Alfa-Romeo: launch of two sports coupes (GTV and 8C), two SUVs (C and E segments) and the successor of the Giulietta (C segment). The future Alfetta (segment E) will not be launched and the Mito (segment B) will not be replaced.
- Maserati: launch of a D segment SUV (Alfa Stelvio base), replacement of Ghibli, Quattroporte, Levante ,and replacement of the Gran Coupe and Gran Cabrio by the Alfieri coupé and cabriolet.
- Chrysler: cancellation of the brand at the end of 300 and Pacifica.
- Dodge: cancellation of the brand at the end of the Charger, Challenger, Caravan, Journey and Durango.
- Ram: replacing the current big pickups and adding a mid-range pickup.
- Jeep: the range will go from 5 models to 11 models, including the future Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, Grand Commander, Wrangler pickup and a smaller SUV (segment A) than the Renegade.
