Ford Group sold 4.21 million vehicles in 2020
- The Ford group (Ford, Lincoln) sold 4.21 million light vehicles (passenger and utility) in 2020, down 17.8% compared to 2019. The second American carmaker, once the second largest carmaker in the world, remains at the seventh place in the world acquired in 2019, behind Hyundai-Kia and Honda, barely ahead of the FCA group, which will be consolidated with the PSA group from 2021, as a consequence of the merger between FCA and PSA. The Ford group will therefore lose one place in 2021 compared to 2020, being in eighth place in the world, just ahead of Suzuki, BMW and Daimler.
- One of the main reasons for the Ford group's sales decline in 2020 is the end of production of sedans in North America. A strategy which will continue in 2021 with the end of production of sedans in South America. Ford, however, continues to produce sedans in Europe and China, but until when?
- Ford group sales are broken down into 4.054 million Ford branded vehicles and 159,000 Lincoln branded vehicles.
- The Ford group's worldwide sales break down as follows:
• The USA remains its first market, with 2.03 million sales, or 48% of its worldwide sales (against 47% in 2019).
• Europe remains its second market, with 960,000 sales, or 23% of its global sales (compared to 26% in 2019).
• China is becoming its third market, with 297,648 sales, or 7% of its global sales (compared to 5% in 2019).
• Canada becomes its fourth market, with 239,571 sales, or 6% of its global sales (compared to 4% in 2019).

Inovev forecasts 25,000 units per year of the new Mercedes EQA

Inovev forecasts 25,000 units per year of the new Mercedes EQA
- Mercedes has unveiled its battery electric C-segment SUV, the EQA, which was originally supposed to be produced in Hambach (France) before the Daimler Group decided to sell this plant to the British chemical company Ineos and produce the EQA in the German plant in Rastatt, alongside the GLA from which it borrows its bodywork.
- The EQA is a 4.46 m long, 1.83 m wide and 1.62 m high vehicle, based on the MFA-2 platform. The announced range is 425 km according to the WLTP cycle. The price will start at nearly 47,500 euros, while its competitor the Volkswagen ID3 is priced from 38,000 to 49,000 euros depending on the version. The other main competitor, the Kia e-Niro, is priced from 37,000 to 41,000 euros depending on the version. The Mercedes EQA will therefore be at the top of the segment price, which is classical for a premium vehicle.
- The EQA is added to the Mercedes BEV range, namely EQC and EQV, which have not been widely distributed until now, as only 31,000 units were sold in 2020 (29,000 EQC and 2,000 EQV). Inovev forecasts 25,000 units per year of the new EQA model.
- It is to be noted that Mercedes has a certain delay compared to other carmakers concerning alternative engines, as battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models today only represent 6.5% of its overall production while these two types of engine represent 11% on the European market in 2020, and even 24% including non-rechargeable hybrids (HEV). The EQA will be followed this year by the launch of the EQB, EQE and EQS (sedan and SUV), which will be marketed in segments C, E and F respectively.

Review of electric car sales in Europe in 2020

Review of electric car sales in Europe in 2020
- The large Europe (European Union + United Kingdom + Norway + Switzerland + Iceland) registered 1,364,813 battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles in 2020, compared to 559,871 in 2019, which represents an increase of 144 % year over year. These vehicles represented 11.5% of the European passenger car market in 2020, against 3.5% in 2019. The share of these models tripled between 2019 and 2020. This 2020 total is broken down into 745,684 BEVs (+107% compared to 2019) and 619,129 PHEVs (+210%).
- The carmaker offer increases (both BEV and PHEV) and bonuses has pushed the strong sales growth of electric vehicles in Europe in 2020, even if demand is concentrated in a few countries, as in the 29 European countries Listed nearly 80% of sales of this type of car are concentrated in 6 markets: Germany, France, England, Norway, the Netherlands and Italy.
- Given the generally high retail price of these vehicles, it makes sense that the demanding markets are the richest European countries, but what will happen when the sale of pure thermal vehicles will be banned? We could then see a drastic drop in sales of new cars in some markets, because buyers (at least non-professional individuals) will not necessarily be able to acquire an electric car. These customers could transfer to second hand vehicles (thermal or electric) or keep their old vehicles longer.
- The best-selling vehicle in Europe in the BEVs category is the Renault Zoé which for the first time reached 100,000 annual sales, ahead of the Tesla Model 3 (87,000 sales) and the new Volkswagen ID3 (57,000 sales).

The Chinese market of battery electric vehicle in 2020
- China registered 1,271,958 battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles in 2020, up from 1,177,421 units in 2019, an 8% increase year-over-year. These vehicles represented 6.3% of the Chinese passenger car market in 2020, compared to 5.5% in 2019.
- This volume is lower than that recorded in Europe in 2020 (1,364,813 sales). However, the number of BEVs is higher in China than in Europe, reaching 995,397 units in China (+16% compared to 2019) while it does not exceed 745,684 units in Europe.
- It seems that the Chinese electric market has been boosted by the arrival of Tesla “Made in China” at the beginning of 2020, as the American carmaker has become a leader in this market in the first year of its local production, both at the level brand and model. The Model 3 thus became the best-selling electric model in China in 2020, with 137,459 units, outstanding models like the BAIC EU-Series or BYD Yuan.
- New models arrived on the Chinese market in 2020, with some success such as the NIO ES6, Weltmeister EX5, XPeng P7, but it is above all the success of the Wuling Hong Guan Mini EV that impresses, with 127,651 sales from the first year. This very compact model is in the wave of the Smart EQ Fortwo, as it measures 2.92 m long, 1.49 m wide and 1.62 m high. It has a range of 120 km to 170 km depending on the battery capacity. This model became the cheapest electric vehicle in China.

The Toyota group sold 9,528,438 vehicles in 2020
- The Toyota group (Toyota, Daihatsu, Lexus, Hino) has published its sales figures for the year 2020. Its worldwide sales reached 9.53 million units including heavy utility vehicles (passenger and utility vehicles), which represents a drop of 11.3% compared to 2019. Without heavy utility vehicles, the Toyota group has sold 9.39 million light vehicles (passenger and light utility vehicles). In both cases, the Japanese group is ahead (for the first time since 2015) of Volkswagen, as the German group did not exceed 9.12 million light vehicles and 9,31 million vehicles including heavy utility vehicles (-15,2% compared to 2019). The collapse of the European market caused the Volkswagen group a loss of 900,000 sales in 2020, while the Toyota group lost only 100,000 in the same market last year. It was this difference of 800,000 units that caused Toyota to overtake Volkswagen in 2020.
- The Toyota brand represents 7,973,453 sales, Lexus 718,715, Daihatsu 693,977 and Hino 142,293.
- The breakdown by market is as follows:

• Europe is its fourth market, with 700,000 vehicles, or 8% of its global sales (compared to 10% in 2019).
• These four markets represent 69% of the Toyota group's global sales in 2020 (compared to 67% in 2019).
