Mercedes leads BMW and Audi in terms of sales in 2018
In 2017, the three premium German brands  sold 6.6 million vehicles worldwide, including 2.6 million for Mercedes, 2.1 million for BMW and 1.9 million for Audi.

In 2018, the ranking of premium German brands has not changed.

In the first half of the current year, Mercedes, with 1.19 million sales, is still ahead of BMW (1.06 million units) and Audi (0.95 million units).

In terms of growth, Audi is ahead of its competitors, with + 4.5%, ahead of Mercedes (+ 4%) and BMW (+ 2%) which are growing more slowly, keeping in mind that the overall global car market grew by around 3.5% in the first half of 2018.

With the launch of the new Audi A1, Q3, Q8, new Mercedes A-Class, GLE, EQC, new BMW 3 Series, X5, Z4, the increase in Premium brand sales is nonetheless inevitable, especially as the Chinese market (world's largest market) buys more and more of this type of models, given that the 100% Chinese premium offer remains marginal, and the American competition (Cadillac, Lincoln) is not very present.

Over full year 2018, the three German premium brands are expected to sell together nearly 7 million vehicles worldwide.

Inovev forecasts 20,000 units a year for the new Audi E-Tron
Audi unveiled its new 100% electric SUV, which was originally called Q6 (its length is indeed between those of Q5 and Q7) and which is finally called E-Tron, at the Paris Motorshow. This new SUV has the same style as  the other SUVs of the brand, like the recent Q3 and the Q5. Audi did not want to create a very different body for its 100% electric SUV. As a result, the E-Tron has a body very similar to that of other SUVs of the Audi brand. Only its name differs from other Audi SUVs. Its competitors are the BMW X3 Electric, Mercedes EQC, Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace.

The Audi E-Tron has two electric motors, one at the front (168hp) and the other at the rear (188hp). These two engines allow it an autonomy of 400 kilometers (WLTP cycle), equivalent to that of the Mercedes EQC.

As expected, the Audi Q6 E-Tron will be manufactured in the Audi plant in Brussels (Belgium) which has just stopped manufacturing the Audi A1, its new generation being transferred to Martorell (Spain). However, the production volumes will not be comparable, since the Audi A1 was produced at 100,000 units per year on this site, while the SUV E-Tron should, according to Inovev, be at 20,000 units per year, given its price and its technology that clearly differs from a large series model.

This model could be marketed in the future with a thermal engine, which would logically be called Q6 and complete the range of Audi SUVs. It would also then use the full capacity of the Brussels production site.

BMW could transfer production of the Mini from Oxford to its new Debrecen plant
In a previous Analysis, Inovev had suggested that the final Brexit conditions that will take effect in March 2019 could force the BMW group to transfer all or part of the production of the Mini from the Oxford factory (Cowley) in England to the Dutch factory of Born.

Another possibility exists, however, since the announcement of the construction of a new BMW factory in Debrecen in Hungary. Indeed, this new plant could produce Mini, from 2020 or 2021, if the final conditions of the Brexit require the BMW group to transfer all or part of the production of the Mini.

It should be noted that the decision to build a plant in Hungary (where Audi and Mercedes each have an assembly plant) dates from before the Brexit vote, and therefore there is no direct link between the announcement of the construction of a plant in Hungary and the Brexit vote.

However, it seems unlikely that, if the final conditions of the Brexit force the BMW group to move the production of the Mini, BMW would not take advantage of the opportunity offered by its new plant in Debrecen.

Everything will depend on what will happen in March 2019. The possible option of absence of an agreement would put Britain on the same plane as India or the United States.

Inovev forecasts 130,000 new DS 3 Crossbacks a year
The PSA Group has unveiled the new DS 3 Crossback at the Paris MotorshowThis model completes the DS range reduced to DS 3 and DS 7 Crossback since the disappearance of the DS 4 and DS 5 at the beginning of this summer. The DS 3 Crossback is a segment B SUV that should take over from the DS 3 whose origins date back to 2009.

The new model is the first model based on the PSA Group's CMP platform. It has five doors, while the original DS 3 has only three. It is 7cm (1.53m) taller and 17cm (4.12m) longer than the DS 3, dimensions close to those of Renault Captur. The DS 3 Crossback competes with Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Citroen C3 Aircross, Fiat 500X, Opel Mokka, Opel Crossland and Ford Ecosport.

Manufactured in the PSA factory in Poissy (France), the DS 3 Crossback is equipped with turbo 3-cylinder petrol engines 1.2l (100hp, 130hp, 155hp) and 4 diesel cylinders 1.5 l (100hp, 130hp) which are already mounted on other PSA models. As of October 2019, the DS3 Crossback will also be available in 100% electric version (E-Tense) that will enter into direct competition with the Renault Zoe. This electric motor will then be mounted on the Peugeot 208 and 2008. The autonomy of the DS 3 Crossback electric would be 300 kilometers (WLTP cycle). Inovev expects a production volume of 130,000 units per year of the new DS 3 Crossback at the Poissy site, which will also produce the future Peugeot 2008 as of 2020.

Inovev forecasts around 160,000 Mercedes GLE SUVs a year
Mercedes unveiled the new generation of its segment E SUV, the GLE, at the Paris Motorshow. This car takes the style of the old generation and will continue to be manufactured only on the American site of Tuscaloosa (Alabama).

This model, which will be declined shortly in coupe version, competes with the BMW X5 (which has just been renewed), the Audi Q7, the Volvo XC90, the Lexus RX, the Volkswagen Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne. It can also compete with the US Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse SUVs.

The engines of the GLE are the following: two 6-cylinder 3.0 and 8-cylinder 4.7 petrol engines, a 6-cylinder 3.0-cylinder rechargeable hybrid engine, and two 2.0-cylinder 2.0 and 6-cylinder 3.0 diesel engines. The powers of these different engines have not yet been communicated.

In 2017, the Mercedes GLE had sold 160,000 units worldwide. The top five Mercedes GLE markets were then: 1 / the United States (55,000 sales) 2 / China (45,000 sales) 3 / Germany (13,000 sales) 4 / Canada (6,500 sales) 5 / Russia (6,500 sales). These five markets account for 80% of GLE's total sales.

This ranking should not fundamentally change. The new generation of the Mercedes GLE is expected to reach, according to Inovev, around 160,000 units a year, mainly in China and the United States.
