Inovev forecasts 100,000 units per year of the new Hyundai Bayon
Hyundai has unveiled a new compact SUV (B-segment), named Bayonand derived from the Hyundai i20 sedan which will be produced in the same plant in Turkey from this year and which will be sold exclusively in Europe.

This SUV will do a bit of duplication with the Hyundai Kona which is available in thermal, plug-in hybrid and battery electric versions, while the Bayon will only be equipped with gasoline engines, as the i20 sedan: a 3-cylinder 1.0l displacement and a 4-cylinder 1.25l displacement, with three different powers (85 hp, 100 hp and 120 hp).

It is therefore – according to these characteristics - more a replacement of the small B-segment MPV, the iX20, which was produced between 2010 and 2019. In total, the Hyundai iX20 was sold at 365,000 units, mostly in Europe. The Bayon will have to take over this market.

The dimensions of the Bayon SUV are: 4.18 m long, 1.78 m wide, 1.50 m high. Compared to the i20 sedan, it is 14cm longer and 5cm taller, while maintaining the same width. The Hyundai Bayon will compete with the B-segment SUVs, namely the Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Citroën C3 Aircross, Ford Puma, Opel Crossland, Opel Mokka, Volkswagen T-Cross, Volkswagen T-Roc, Nissan Juke, Seat Arona , Skoda Kamiq, Suzuki Vitara. In terms of price, it is at the level of the Citroën C3 Aircross and Opel Crossland. The Hyundai Bayon will try to revive the activity of the Turkish plant in Izmit, which suffered from the drop in production of the i20 sedan. Inovev expects 100,000 Bayon sales per year, from 2022.

Stellantis will not launch Peugeot brand in the US market
Stellantis, born from the merger of PSA and FCA, has announced that it is cancelling the idea of Peugeot returning to the US market. It will focus on historical local brands such as Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep to continue the production and maintain its influence in this market. He could however develop the Alfa-Romeo and Maserati brands there, which already have a presence. Alfa Romeo sold 18,581 vehicles and Maserati 5,214 in the USA in 2020.

No Peugeot model, and even less Citroën, DS or Opel, would have managed to achieve such volumes, given that these brands are almost unknown in this country, as they have never really been marketed (or at very low level).

Peugeot was initially due to make its return to the USA in 2023, this objective having been defined at the beginning of 2019, but the merger project between PSA and FCA in 2020, then the merger itself in January 2021 have redefined this strategy of conquering the American market by the Peugeot brand. It now seems more rational and wiser to develop the influence of Premium foreign brands such as Alfa-Romeo and Maserati in the US market, which are already known in the country.

The European brands which are beneficiating a good distribution on the American market are indeed the Premium brands, like BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jaguar, Land-Rover, Volvo, and the Luxury brands, like Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Aston-Martin. Main stream European brands have no chance of developing there, even Volkswagen is experiencing great difficulties in this market today, although its presence dates back to the 1950s.

Tesla produced 180,000 BEVs in the first quarter of 2021
Tesla produced 180,000 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) worldwide in the first quarter of 2021, which is the equivalent to an annual rate of around 720,000 units, which would represent an increase of more than 40% in 2021 compared to 2020. Compared to Q1-2020, the increase has already reached 102% as Tesla's production did not exceed 89,000 units last year over the period. It should be noted that production in China of Tesla didn’t start yet at this time. Today, Tesla's Chinese plant produces 25,000 vehicles per month. In addition, the Berlin plant could start up before the end of the year (or early 2022), which will boost Tesla's production growth.

Tesla's sales reached 184,800 units over the same period, suggesting that there was a stock of vehicles at the end of last year, maybe over 5,000 units. The best-selling models in the first quarter of 2021 were the Model 3 and Model Y which account for 80% of Tesla's sales.

The Californian carmaker's sales targets for 2021 are 850,000 units worldwide, which would consolidate its first place in the world in the category of BEVs.

What seemed very optimistic a few years ago is about to happen: Tesla is on track to sell a million electric vehicles by 2022.

Inovev forecasts 40,000 units per year of the Citroën C5 X
The Citroën brand (one of the many brands of the new Stellantis group) has unveiled its new D-segment model replacing the old C5 (2007-2017), which disappeared from French assembly lines four years ago. To replace the C5 sedans and station wagons, the brand preferred not to compete the Peugeot 508 frontally, and show its difference with a car with a cross over line, a bit like the recent C4. The new C5 is therefore called C5 X to clearly assert its character inspired from the SUV style, even if the C5 Aircross which remains in the Citroën range, is the truth SUV of the brand.

Another specificity, the Stellantis group has considered a better option to produce the C5 X in China (in Chengdu, at Dongfeng) rather than in France, indicating that the market for this category of vehicles is seven times larger in China than in France. It is true, but the Citroën brand only represents 0.1% of the Chinese market today, and it will be very difficult to impose this type of model on this market. Inovev estimates the sales of this model to be 5,000 to 10,000 units per year in China and 25,000 to 30,000 per year in Europe. The C5 X will therefore be imported from China for the European market, like the Dacia Spring, the DS 9 or the BMW iX3.

The C5 X, which is 4.80 m long (more than a Citroën CX or a Citroën XM) will be equipped with a petrol engine and a plug-in hybrid petrol engine, also available on the Peugeot 508 launched in 2018, i.e. the two 180 hp and 225 hp versions of the 1.598 cc engine (code EP). No diesel available on this model, probably because there is no diesel engine produced in China, since this market is not demanding.

Inovev forecasts 75,000 units per year of the new Kia EV6
Kia has unveiled its new battery electric vehicle (BEV) based on the e-GMP common platform used for all electric models of the Hyundai-Kia group. At Hyundai, we saw the launch of the Ioniq 5 based on this platform which will be followed by several other models in 2022 and 2023. At Kia, we see the launch of this EV6 today, also followed by other models in 2022 and 2023. The Korean carmaker is getting ready for battle to launch its offensive in the electric vehicle market, like other carmakers. Eventually, Hyundai and Kia could market a dozen of different models on this platform, including six from Hyundai and six from Kia. However, the two brands want to differentiate themselves in terms of design, as the Kia EV6 is very different from the Ioniq 5.

The Kia EV6 is 4.68 m long compared to 4.64 m for the Ioniq 5. Its battery provides 500 km of range compared to 460 km for the Ioniq 5, according to the WLTP cycle.

Kia emphasizing the sporty side of its EV6 (while Hyundai favors the family side), a GT version will be available, with a power of 535 hp (430 kW) against 325 hp (239 kW) and 228 hp (168 kW) for both basic versions. This GT version can reach 250 km per hour at top speed, like an Audi E-Tron GT or a Porsche Taycan. The communicated prices are 48,000 euros for the 168 kW version, 56,000 euros for the 239 kW version and 67,000 euros for the 430 kW version.

Kia expects to sell a total of 880,000 electric cars worldwide in 2030. Inovev forecasts 75,000 Kia EV6 sales per year in the medium term.
