Renault has started production of the Logan in Tangier
- We saw in a previous Auto-Analyse 2022-12 that automobile production at the Renault assembly site in Oran fell in 2020 and 2021, from 60,012 units in 2019, to 754 units in 2020 and 5,208 units in 2021. This fall is not specifically linked to Covid since the factories in Europe and in other regions of the world which have been victims of Covid have been inactive for only a few months and not for the whole year.
- This fall would rather be due to problems related to the integration rate deemed too low by the Algerian government. He had decided not to continue the activity of the "screwdriver" factories set up by Renault, Volkswagen and Hyundai-Kia which had agreed to produce vehicles in Algeria following the Algerian government's decision to stop imports. from abroad. However, following the protest of the Algerian government on these "screwdriver" factories, Volkswagen and Hyundai-Kia stopped their assembly activity in Algeria last year.
- There remains Renault which, it is true, has been the leader of the Algerian market for decades and which for the moment is continuing to assemble vehicles in Oran at low rates. It is however interesting to note that the Moroccan site of Tangier started production of the Logan in 2021 (40,000 units) for the first time since its opening, without there being any drop in production at the Romanian site of Pitesti, which means that there may be a connection between the virtual shutdown of Logan production in Oran and the start of Logan production in Tangier. These models could for example be exported to Algeria.

The European passenger car market by engine in the first quarter of 2022
- Details
The European passenger car market by engine in the first quarter of 2022
- The share of the different types of engine in sales of passenger cars (PCs) in Europe (29 countries) continues to evolve rapidly. The overall picture shows a steady increase in sales of electrified cars (BEV, PHEV, HEV-Full, HEV-Mild) and a steady decline in petrol and diesel engines.
- Over the 12 months of 2020, petrol engines represented 49% of passenger car sales in Europe and diesel engines 27%. Together, these powertrains accounted for 76% of sales. Alternative engines represented 24% of sales, broken down into 9% MHEV, 6% BEV (100% electric cars), 5% PHEV (plug-in hybrids) and 4% HEV (non-plug-in hybrids).
- Over the 12 months of 2021, petrol engines represented 41% of passenger car sales in Europe and diesel engines 18%. Together, these powertrains accounted for 59% of sales. Alternative engines represented 41% of sales, broken down into 15% MHEV, 11% BEV, 9% PHEV and 6% HEV.
- Over the first 3 months of 2022, petrol engines represent 38% of passenger car sales in Europe and diesel engines 15%. Together, these engines represent 53% of sales. Alternative engines represent 47% of sales, broken down into 18% MHEV, 12% BEV, 9% PHEV and 8% HEV. We see for the first time a stagnation in the share of PHEV, while BEV, HEV and MHEV continue to increase.

Comparison of thermal/HEV and BEV/PHEV sales in Europe

Comparison of thermal/HEV and BEV/PHEV sales in Europe
- Sales of passenger cars in Europe have shown a clear decline since 2020 in the registrations of cars with combustion engines or non-rechargeable hybrids (HEV-Full and HEV-Mild) since the volume of their sales has fallen from a rate of 1 million / 1 8 million per month between January 2018 and March 2020 (start of containment following the first wave of Covid) at a rate of 600,000 / 1.2 million between April 2020 and March 2022.
- At the same time, the increase in sales in Europe of plug-in passenger cars (BEV and PHEV) does not at all compensate for the drop in sales of passenger cars with thermal engines or non-plug-in hybrids. Sales of this type of vehicle are even tending to stabilize at around 200,000 units per month.
- The overall rate of registrations in Europe therefore fell from 1 million / 1.8 million per month between January 2018 and March 2020, to a rate of 800,000 / 1.4 million between April 2020 and March 2022, which gives a drop from 20% to 23% compared to the 2018-2020 period.
- In terms of market share, sales of passenger cars with thermal engines or non-rechargeable hybrids fell from nearly 100% in January 2018 to 90% in March 2020 then to 80% in June 2021 and 70% in December 2021.
- Sales of electric passenger cars (BEV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) for their part went from almost 0% in January 2018 to 10% in March 2020 and 20% in June 2021 and 30% in December 2021.

Market share of BEV and PHEV in Europe and China in the first quarter of 2022
- Details
Market share of BEV and PHEV in Europe and China in the first quarter of 2022
- The market share of 100% electric passenger cars (BEV) in Europe continues to grow, since it increased from 6% in 2020 to 11% in 2021 and 12% in the first quarter of 2022. Admittedly, the pace of growth slows in a European market down nearly 11% in the first quarter of 2022, but March confirms the recovery of BEV sales with a market share of 14% (compared to 10% in January and 11% in February ). The year should end with a penetration of nearly 15%.
- The market share of 100% electric passenger cars (BEV) in China also continues to grow, rising from 5% in 2020 to 13% in 2021 and 17% in the first quarter of 2022. BEVs even show a share of 19% in March (against 15% in January and 16% in February). The year should end with a penetration of nearly 20%.
- The market share of plug-in hybrid passenger cars (PHEV) in Europe has tended to stagnate since 2021, at around 9% of the market. This share increased from 5% in 2020 to 9% in 2021 and 9% in the first quarter of 2022. The year should therefore end with a penetration of around 9%.
- On the other hand, the market share of plug-in hybrid passenger cars (PHEV) in China continues to grow, since it rose from 1.5% in 2020 to 3% in 2021 and 4% in the first quarter of 2022. Admittedly, the growth rate is slowing but the months of February and March 2022 are respectively at 5% and 4.5%, which should result in a penetration of around 4.5% over the whole year, i.e. half as much than in Europe.

Inovev plans 60,000 units per year of the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer
- Details
Inovev plans 60,000 units per year of the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer
- After unveiling the Grand Cherokee L at the end of 2021 and the Grand Cherokee at the start of 2022, the American brand specializing in SUVs has unveiled its top-of-the-range model which is above the Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L: these are the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer which take over the platform of the large Dodge Ram pickup. These models borrow their name from older models of the brand manufactured between 1962 and 1991. It is to counter the recent Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade that Jeep is launching this model, 5.44 m long and weighing more than 2.9 tons. With this model which becomes the most imposing Jeep of all time, we are in excess and the engines are in line with the rest: a 5.7-liter V8 developing 392 hp on the Wagoneer and a 6.4-liter V8 developing 471 hp on the Grand Wagoneer. Note that these two engines are already fitted to the much shorter Dodge Durango SUV (based on Dodge Ram) since it does not exceed 5.11 m in length.
- The prices of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are high since in the United States, they are between 100,000 dollars and 135,000 dollars depending on the version, which will have an impact on their distribution. In 2021, 21,000 units were sold in six months, or 3,500 per month and 15,000 units in the first quarter of 2022, or 5,000 per month. Over the whole year, Inovev expects 60,000 units produced. For comparison, the Ford Expedition (5.33 m) was produced at 83,000 units in 2021, the Chevrolet Tahoe (5.35 m) at 101,000 units, the GMC Yukon (5.35 m) at 56,000 units, the Cadillac Escalade (5.38 m) at 39,000 units. These four models share their platform with the large Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado pickups.
