What is the share of BEVs in the models sold in Europe?
In the European automotive market in 2021, electric models are divided into two categories. Those which are sold exclusively in battery electric (BEV) version and those which are also sold, in addition to the BEV, in thermal or hybrid version. There are around thirty models sold exclusively in battery electric version on the European market. The models sold both in battery electric and in thermal (or hybrid) are less numerous, there are about twenty of them, and it is therefore interesting to know the share that the electric battery version represents in the total sales of each of these models in Europe.

There are not many models that are sold mainly in BEV, as there are only the Volkswagen Up (51%), Hyundai Kona (51%) and Kia Niro (45%). The Hyundai Ioniq also, but at a lower level (31%).

Between 20% and 30% of sales, we count the Mercedes EQC (compared to the GLC) with 26% of sales in electric version, the Renault Zoé (compared to the Clio) with 25% of sales in electric, the Volkswagen ID3 (compared to the Golf) with 23% of electric sales, the DS3 Crossback with 21% of electric sales, the Renault Twingo with 21% of electric sales and the Volkswagen ID4 (compared to the Tiguan) with 20% of sales in electric.

Between 10% and 20% of sales, there are the Fiat 500 with 19% of electric sales, the Peugeot 208 with 16% of electric sales, the Mercedes EQA (compared to the GLA) with 16% of electric sales, the Mini with 15% of electric sales, the Opel Mokka with 14% of electric sales, the Opel Corsa with 11% of electric sales and the Peugeot 2008 with 10% of electric sales.

Jaguar plans to completely reposition itself
For three years, sales of Jaguar models have fallen sharply. The E-Pace and F-Pace SUVs enjoyed brief success before drastically reducing their presence in the global market. As for sedans, they practically disappeared from the market, with sales becoming extremely confidential, the movement having started with the discontinuation of the large XJ sedan, heir to a long line of F-segment sedans (1968-2019).

In fact, the Jaguar brand once considered one of the most iconic and luxurious British brands (Jaguar MKX and XJ6 / XJ12, Jaguar E-Type and XJS) has become very ordinary by positioning itself in the mid-size sedan market(D-segment) and mid-range SUVs. The end of large coupes and convertibles contributed to the loss of prestige.

Arriving at the head of Jaguar at the start of the year, Thierry Bolloré (ex-Renault) announced that he was working on a total brand repositioning, in order to compete in the luxury automotive market.

Inspired by Jaguar’s strategy in the 1950s, the carmaker intends to move upmarket and compete again with Bentleys, both in the limousine, SUV, coupes and convertibles markets. Bentley has sold between 10,000 and 12,000 cars each year since 2012, and the brand is doing very well, while Jaguar, which sold 90,000 cars in 2020 (against a target of 200,000 per year) is financially in difficulties. At the heart of Jaguar's new strategy, battery electric powertrain for all models in 2030, such as the I-Pace launched in 2018.

BEVs and PHEVs production in Europe in the first half of 2021
The production volume of light vehicles (PCs + LCVs) in Europe 30 countries (EU + United Kingdom + Norway + Switzerland) reached 7,166,020 units in the first half of 2021, compared to 5,420,674 in the first half of 2020, which represents an increase of 32% from one year to another, being understood that the 2020 year (and particularly the first half of the year) had been handicapped by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Of this total, electrified vehicles (battery electric - BEV, hybrids-HEV and plug-in hybrids-PHEV) represented 850,566 units in the first half of 2021, against 343,056 in the first half of 2020, up 148%. This quantity is equivalent to 12% o the f European production in the first half of 2021 (compared to 6% in the first half of 2020 and 9% for the whole of 2020). BEVs represent 4.7% of the European production, all engines combined (336,481 units; + 153%), PHEVs 5.2% (373,264 units; + 174%) and HEVs nearly 2% (140,821 units; + 90%).

Over this period, Germany remains the country that produces the highest numbers of BEVs (92,411 units) and PHEVs (149,725 units) while France produces the most HEVs (66,696 units), due to the Toyota Yaris.

The carmaker having produced the highest number of BEVs over this same period is the Volkswagen group (123,818 units; + 251%) followed by the Stellantis groups (70,873 units; + 211%) and Renault-Nissan (61,960 units; + 28%).

The carmaker having produced the highest number of PHEVs over this same period is also the Volkswagen group (99,226 units; + 239%) followed by the BMW groups (71,027 units; + 97%), Geely (55,785 units; + 91%) and Stellantis (50,408 units; + 192%).

The carmaker having produced the highest number of HEVs over the same period is the Toyota group (120,923 units; + 68%).

Inovev forecasts a production of 150,000 units per year of the new Opel Astra
The sixth generation of the Opel Astra (C-segment sedan) has been unveiled. This time it is a model based on the EMP2 platform of PSA (now Stellantis) on which the Peugeot 308, Peugeot 3008, Peugeot 508, Peugeot 5008, Citroën C5 Aircross, DS 7 Crossback and Opel Grandland are based.

The new model's mission is to revive sales of the Astra family, which has steadily declined since 2005, victim both of competition from C-segment sedans from other carmakers and of the strong demand for SUVs which reduced noticeably the influence of sedans at European level, Opel's main market.

The new Astra will use the same engines as for the Peugeot 308, namely the 1.2-liter 3-cylinder petrol (110 hp and 130 hp), the 1.5-liter 4-cylinder diesel (130 hp) and the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder + electric motor (PHEV) version (180 hp and 225 hp) at the top of the range. As for the 308, the new Astra will soon be proposed in station wagon version, like all Astra since the start of their career.

In 2020, the production of the Opel Astra had fallen to less than 100,000 units, against 200,000 in 2018, 300,000 in 2016 and nearly 600,000 in 2005. The new Astra will be produced at the rate of 150,000 units per year according to Inovev forecasts and exclusively on the German plant of Rüsselsheim (and no longer on the British and Polish plants of Ellesmere Port and Gliwice).

VW may produce 700,000 electric vehicles in Germany by 2030
With production of electric ID3 and ID4 now at mid-series level (54,695 units having been sold in Europe in the first half of 2021, equivalent to 100,000 over the whole of this year), the Volkswagen group has announced that it will gradually install a production capacity of 700,000 electric vehicles in Germany by 2030, spread into five plants.

The Zwickau plant already has a capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year, with a saturation scheduled for 2023 or 2024. In addition to the ID3 and ID4, this plant also assembles the Audi Q4 E- Tron.

Part of the ID3s are also assembled at the Dresden plant and part of the ID4s will soon be assembled at the Emden plant, where Volkswagen Passat models have been produced for many years and which will be transferred to the Czech plant in Kvasiny in 2022-2023. The Emden plant will also produce the future ID5. The capacity of this plant should ultimately represent 200,000 electric vehicles per year (the ID6 is a priori intended exclusively for China and will be produced locally).

In addition, there is the Hanover plant, which will host the production of the electric versions of the new Kombi and the new Transporter in 2022. This plant should ultimately represent a capacity of 100,000 units per year. Finally, there is the Wolfsburg plant, which will be the last to switch to the production of electric vehicles and which will eventually have 150,000 electric vehicles per year. This growth will come at the expense of the Golf, which should see its production volume decrease by 2030. As stated by the management of the company, the history of Volkswagen can be summed up in three stages: the Beetle, then the Golf and today the ID range.
