The Russian market will not restart in 2016
- The Russian car market will not restart in the second half of 2016 but more likely in the second half of 2017.
- In the first 8 months of 2016, the Russian market is down 14.9% and the trend was not reversed in August (-18%), which makes expect a volume of 1.35 million vehicles over the year 2016 (against 1.6 million units in 2015).
- Economic parameters remain unfavorable with a purchasing power of Russian which fell down sharply due to the recession hitting the country following the collapse of oil prices and Western sanctions linked to the Ukrainian crisis.
- Suddenly, the Russian economic organizations and automakers expect a still weak Russian market in 2017 (1.3 million units), with a slight recovery late in the year.
- In this context, the volume of imports remain low. Import sales decreased 14.3% in the first half of 2016, whereas they had fallen by 49.6% in 2015 and 18.4% in 2014. They will reach their lowest point in 2017 (300 000 units against 315,000 in 2016, 370,000 in 2015, 730,000 in 2014 and 900,000 in 2013).

Audi unveils the new generation of the A5
- Alongside the sedan and station wagon A4 , Audi offers since 2007 a sportier variant labelledA5 and available in coupe, cabriolet and Sportback (which is actually a sports hatchback sedan) version. One year after the launch of the new generation of the A4 sedan, Audi has unveiled the A5 coupe and the A5 Sportback.

- Into the close to 100 000 vehicles A5s produced each year in Neckarsulm (Germany), the Sportback represents between 52% and 55% of yearly sales, the coupe between 27% and 30% of sales and the convertible around 18% of sales . The Sportback represents more than half of the Audi A5 sales. It is this model that has just been unveiled this month.
- The Audi A5 competes with other models of Premium D segment, such as the BMW 4 Series (coupe, convertible, Gran Coupe), which is its main competitor with a comparable range, and as well the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class, Jaguar XE, Alfa Giulia, Volvo S60 or even DS 5.
- The new generation of Audi A5 Sportback loses 85 kg on the weighing scale, a lightening obtained in particular through an optimization of the MLB platform shared with the Audi A4. The model comes equipped with 3 petrol engines (2.0 TFSI of 190ch and 252ch and 3.0 TFSI 354ch) and three diesel engines (2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI 190ch 218ch and 286ch). Its dimensions are unchanged.
- Inovev forecasts a production level of 100,000 Audi A5 a year in Europe.

Hyundai is launching the second generation of its compact i30
- Launched in September 2011, the first generation of the compact hatchback Hyundai i30 is stopped at the end of 2016.
Its replacement, designed by Peter Schreyer (formerly at Audi) in a more consensual style than the old model, was unveiled this week and will be presented at the next Paris Motor Show in October.

- Still produced in the Czech Republic (Nosovice) to be sold in Europe, the new i30 will be available in sedan and station wagon versions as the old generation. However, it has a new platform whose weight was decreased by around 30 kg. This new platform will be also used next year on the third-generation Kia Cee'd which will be still produced in Slovakia (Zilina). The new Hyundai i30 will be equipped with three petrol engines (three-cylinder 1.0 turbo 120hp; 4-cylinder 1.4 100 hp and 1.4 turbo 140hp) and three diesel engines (4-cylinder 1.6 95hp, 110hp and 136hp).
- The new Hyundai i30 addresses the C segment generalist sedans like the VW Golf, Opel Astra, Ford Focus, Renault Megane, Peugeot 308, Citroen C4, Toyota Auris, Nissan Pulsar, Honda Civic, Kia and Fiat Tipo ... Cee'd.
- The C segment sedans represent 20% of the European market in 2015, i.e. less than the B segment sedans (32%) but as much as all SUVs (20%) and more than all the minivans (8%) or the totaled sedans of segment A (8%), D (8%) and E (3%).
- Inovev forecasts a yearly production of 130,000 Hyundai i30 in Europe.

PSA inaugurates its fifth assembly plant in China
- PSA group has so far four plants in China: three in JV with Dongfeng, and one in JV with Changan.
- The three plants in JV with Dongfeng are located in Wuhan(Hubei, Central China) and represent a production capacity of 750,000 vehicles a year (250,000 x 3). They produce Peugeot and Citroen for the Chinese market.
- The plant in JV with Changan is located in Shenzhen (Guangdong, Southern China) and represents a production capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year. This plant manufactures DS for Chinese market.
- In 2015, PSA sold in China 730,000 vehicles locally produced (407,000 Peugeot, Citroën 298 000, 25 000 DS).

- Consequently a fifth plant was needed and has been built. This plant, located in Chengdu (Sichuan, Central Western China), has just been inaugurated. It is fully dedicated to the production of SUVs (capacity: 250,000 units per year).
- Despite disappointing sales figures in the first half 2016 (-20% compared to the first 6 months of 2015), PSA maintains its objectives, counting on the introduction of new SUVs whose 4008 (derived from the new EU 3008).
- Sales of SUVs (total) of all brands grew + 45% in first half 2016 in a PC market rising by 9%. Chinese SUV market now represents nearly 40% of the entire Chinese market.

Peugeot unveils the new generation of 5008
- After the presentation of 3008 in the first half 2016, Peugeot unveils its version extended to 7 places labelled 5008 (465cm against 445cm) that replaces the current 5008 of which 350,000 units were manufactured since 2009 in Sochaux (France).
- The new generation of 5008 will be manufactured at the PSA Rennes site (France), alongside the Peugeot 508 and Citroen C5 which at end of life. PSA has set a target of 75,000 annual sales for the new 5008, twice less than the target set for 3008 (150 000 annual sales).
- The new 5008 will be available from March 2017. It will be equipped with the same engines as the 3008: two gasoline engines (3-cylinder 1.2 turbo 130hp and 4-cylinder 1.6 THP 165ch), and four diesel engines (1.6 HDI 100hp and 120hp, 2.0 HDI 150hp and 180hp). Like the Peugeot 308 and 3008 and the Citroën C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso, the new 5008 is based on the modular platform EMP2 of the PSA group. The vehicle is announced as lighter at that time by a hundred kilos compared to the previous generation.
- The new 5008 will compete with the Renault Grand Scénic and Koleos, Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, Skoda Kodiaq, VW lengthened Tiguan and Nissan X-Trail. While 3008 will be produced in China (under the 4008 label), it is unclear whether the 5008 will follow the same path. But PSA would have advantage to offer this model in China.
