Assessment of Production in Mexico (PC+LUV) for the first 6 months of 2015

In the first half of 2015, production (PC + LUV) in Mexico reached 1.79 million units, an increase of 9.6% compared to the same period last year, when the volume didn't exceed 1.63 million units. The production of passenger cars (PC) increased by 14.7% to 1 million units and those of light trucks (SUVs, minivans, pick-up) increased by 3.8% to 790 000 units.

Mexican production has benefited not only from the strong results in the US market towards which it exports massively but also the arrival of new manufacturers like Mazda and Honda. Other manufacturers are implementing themselves in Mexico such as Audi and Mercedes ( these new plants will launch in 2016 and 2017).

In the first half of 2015, the production of PCs was more efficient than that of light trucks as the arrival of Mazda and Honda resulted in the start of production of Mazda 2, Mazda 3 and Honda Jazz, which was not at the expense of other models produced in Mexico, simply because these models were already marketed in North America but imported from Japan.

By group, Renault-Nissan remains the leading Mexican producer (+ 2.0% to 394 000 units) in front of GM (-1.7% to 340 000 units), FCA (+ 3.1% to 257 000 units), VW (-0.2% to 247 000 units) and Ford (+ 1.4% to 236 000 units).

By model, sedans monopolize the first three places: VW Jetta (+ 4.8% to 208 000 units - including 67 000 exported to the USA), Ford Fusion (+ 5.9% to 161 000 units - including 132 000 exported to the USA), Nissan Sentra (+ 13.9% to 141 000 units - including 106 000 exported to the USA), ahead of two full-size pickups: Dodge Ram (+ 2.4% to 120 000 units) and Chevrolet Silverado (-1% to 118 000 units).

It is the Hyundai-Kia group that benefited the most from the overall rise of the market with an increase of 3.2% (or 16 500 more vehicles than last year), thanks to the new product effect (Kia Sorento, Kia Carnival). The manufacturer that has increased its market share the most (from 4.1% to 5, 3%) is SsangYong (Mahindra group), with its new compact SUV, the Tivoli which was sold at nearly 20 000 copies in Korea over the period.

Thanks to the good sale figures achieved by the Kia Sorento, Hyundai iX35 (Tucson), SsangYong Tivoli and Samsung QM3 (a rebadged Renault Captur imported from Spain), the SUV category rose to 25% of the total market.

By model, the first nine models sold are manufactured by _ Hyundai-Kia, the first being a light utility named Porter (52 000 sales). Assessment of Production in South Korea (PC+LUV) for the first 6 months of 2015

In the first half of 2015, production (PC + LUV) in South Korea reached 2.32 million units, a stable volume (+ 0.6%) compared to the same period last year (2.31 million units). The production of passenger cars (PC) remained stable at 2.14 million units while those of light utility vehicles (LUV) fell by 20% to 168 000 units.

Among these four groups operating in the country, only Renault-Nissan increased its production volume this year, solely thanks to the Nissan Rogue whose production began on Korean assembly lines. This vehicle sold mainly in North America suffered from a lack of capacity in both Japan and the United States. The relative failure of Samsung models has been miraculously compensated by the arrival of a Nissan model on the Samsung site.

By model, the four most produced models are _ manufactured by the leading group, Hyundai-Kia with the Hyundai Elantra / Avante (162 000 sales), Hyundai Verna / Accent (146 000 sales), Kia Picanto / Morning (129 000 sales) and Hyundai Santa Fe (123 000 sales) that benefit from significant export volumes, which is not the case of the Porter or the Sonata for example.
