Fiat Panda is not anymore the unrivaled leader of A Segment in Europe

The A segment (composed of urban cars) accounted for 10%  of European market in 2012. It reached a peak in 2009 ( pushed  by scrapping bonuses).

The Fiat Panda, first in its segment, experienced a significant slowdown of its sales, after increasing between 2004 and 2010 (increase pushed by  scrapping  bonuses.) Italy , which represents the first market of the Panda, has indeed collapsed since 2010 (it lost 35% of its volume between 2009 and 2012). The Fiat 500, launched in 2007, has also competed with Panda. It is positioned at the second place in the A segment in 2012.

The Volkswagen Up, launched in 2011, took in 2012 the third place, ahead of the Renault Twingo(fourth), which was the first between 2000 and 2003. This model is at the end of its life cycle and will be replaced in 2014.

In fifth position, the Smart Fortwo achieves a honourable score given its positioning and price. It is ahead of the trio PSA-Toyota, Aygo, 107 and C1, which will be replaced in 2014.

Korean cars are not well placed (Hyundai i10: Eighth, Chevrolet Spark: eleventh, Kia Picanto: twelfth), but Hyundai has high expectations for the new i10. The model has been launched on the European market and production has just started in Turkey, place of production which comes closer to the European market.

-Ford Ka (tenth) never convinced and will be withdrawn from the market in 2015.

The Japanese carmakers have not caught up yet their production volume in China

The Japanese carmakers production  in China is growing again. However Japanese carmakers have not caught up yet the production volume  that they lost following  the diplomatic dispute between China and Japan regarding the China sea islands called Enkaku by Japanese and Diaoyu by Chinese.

According to Inovev estimates, Japanese carmakers will produce in China in 2013 at total between 2.7 and 2.8 million vehicles, barely the level recorded in 2010. The peak of production was reached in 2011 (2.9 million).

In the last months of 2013, Japanese carmakers have however gradually caught up their production volume. In September 2013 they reached their level of September 2011. The comparison between the  April and May months of 2013 and the April and May months of 2011 is not relevant due to the consequences of the tsunami in Japan in March 2011.

However, the analysis by carmaker shows a dissimilar situation. Nissan and Honda have already exceeded their 2011 production level  several months ago, while Toyota and Mazda currently remain below their level of production of 2011.

It has taken a year for two Japanese carmakers to recover the production level they had  before the diplomatic crisis, and it will take probably several months before the other two carmakers can return to that level.

Mazda will start production at its new Mexico factory in January 2014

Inovev estimates that Mazda will produce 1,2 million vehicles (PC+LUV) worldwide in 2013. 76% of this production being located in Japan. In order to decrease its exports from Japan to North America and increase its production efficiency, Mazda has decided, in 2011 to construct a new plant in Mexico. Indeed, nearly half of the Mazda production on the Japanese soil goes to North America.

This new plant, located at Salamanca city, will start its production in January 2014 with an annual capacity of 140 000 units, and will produce Mazda2 and Mazda3 (90 000 units for the 2 vehicles) but also a vehicle for Toyota.
This Toyota vehicle, a sub-compact car based on the Mazda2, will start to be produced around the summer of 2015 (50 000 units per year).

The production capacity of the plant will then rise to 230,000 units in 2016.

Mazda models produced in the Mexican plant will sign the return of the Japanese carmaker to North America, after Mazda6 production was moved back to Japan last year.

Ford unveils new Transit Connect and Tourneo Connect

Ford has revised the nomenclature of its commercial vehicles and PC (passenger Cars) derivatives. Thus, the name Transit is now applied only to the commercial model and Tourneo to its family (Passenger Car) variant. The utility vehicles Transit, Transit Connect and Transit Courier will be available in a family variant: Tourneo Custom , Tourneo Connect and Tourneo Courier.

Ford has unveiled the new Transit Connect and Tourneo Connect based on the C -Max compact MPV (like the Renault Kangoo based on Scenic and Citroën Berlingo based on the C4 Picasso), and not on the Fiesta. In this way  the new model is bigger than the old model and benefits from more roominess and load volume .

The new Ford Transit Connect and Tourneo Connect will be manufactured in Spain and not in Turkey as the old model. The Valencia plant product indeed the C -Max and Kuga which share the same platforms.

The new models measure 4.42 m ( 4.28 m against the older generation ) and are also available in a long version which measures 4.82m.

The Transit Connect (whose sales have collapsed since 2011  is positioned, within the range of European Ford utility vehicles, between the Transit Custom (same category as Class Mercedes Vito and Opel Movano) and the Transit Courier (same category as Peugeot Bipper and Citroen Nemo) which will be unveiled next year (but a prototype was unveiled earlier this year).

Iran wants the arrival of new car manufacturers

Due to the tightening of US restrictions on Iran’s automotive industry, production fell in this country from 1 600 000 vehicles in 2011  down to 800,000 in 2013 (see previous analyses of Inovev).

Even before the relaxation of the restrictions  which have been promised by Americans within the frame of the 24 November agreement on the nuclear industry,  Iran had announced that it invited major foreign automakers to launch or resume production on its territory.

Renault and PSA could therefore return to Iran next year if all conditions are met. The two French manufacturers have lost production of 500,000 vehicles in 2013 compared to 2011 ( 100,000 for Renault and 400,000 for PSA ).
It is therefore worth for them to return to this market as quickly as possible.

Other carmakers may also be interested in the potential of this market which has grown from 1 million to 1.6 million vehicles from 2005 to 2011, an increase of 100,000 units each year for six years, including Japanese, Korean and Chinese manufacturers,
(Chinese carmakers have already significantly developed their sales in the near-by Africa). Currently only the Hyundai- Kia Group, through its partnership with the second Iranian manufacturer SAIPA, continues its production in Iran, by the side of
Khodro, first Iranian manufacturer.
